[AMRadio] FCC engineers
There is one area a field engineer will show up mucho pronto - any issue involving GPS. We had a situation in Greenville, SC several years ago with pilots complaining about what looked to them like the GPS was being jammed. After initial investigations, a call was made to the FCC in Atlanta, and the next day he was here driving around in a interestingly outfitted car. The interior compartment, including the glass, was designed to make it RF tight. The only signals arriving inside the car and test equipment came from externally mounted antennas. At that time, there were only one of those cars to cover the entire Southeast, and one operator. One of Bill Clinton's endeavors with the federal government was to change it to a social club of sorts. It became necessary to hire as needed, individuals who would fill out the social makeup of gender, race, and sexual orientation. If a highly qualified Caucasian male was hired or promoted, a letter had to be written, outlining why any member of the aforementioned groups, was not selected for a position. Today, in many technical jobs the government is involved in, management and upper management meets the social goals, but are mostly full of incompetents. The FCC is in that group. So is the FAA, which is a good reason to drive yourself or take the train. Remember, one of the reasons the FCC gave for the change to a one-size-fits-all AM power limit rule was that the number of active AM'ers on the air did not justify the costs of the special training that would be necessary, to teach FCC field inspectors how to use different power standards for measuring AM and SSB transmitter power. This rulemaking proposal was released in 1982 as I recall. I still have a thick folder full of paperwork from that proceeding on file. Re: [AMRadio] Need BC-1G 833 Tube Socket
Hi Bob. if that is all it is, it is almost too easy, forget the broken thumb screw, go to the local hardware or NAPA or? and get a 6 32 tap and proper size drill and just drill and tap a new hole somewhere and use a 6 32 screw ( of any type) if you are fussy use a allen head, then if you are like me you forget where you put the allen wrenchs when you need them. However, I have now solved that problem, I have so much crap duplicated and lost that I can now find anything anytime. The other thing, if stripped you can probably run the next size right in the same hole. back when, someone had some brains, that is why there are 6/32, 8/32 and 10/32 threads. I am almost positive that those are 6/32 so just run in an 8/32 tap and use the larger screw. you will need a tap holder also and just be careful starting it and back it out a bit every half turn or so. If repair of a BIG AM xmter is not part of this group, then I do not know what is. Re: [AMRadio] Need BC-1G 833 Tube Socket
I have done this, but with a 10-32 tap and screw. I know the original is bigger than 6-32 and may have been 10-32. I would not use an Allen screw. It is important that the socket itself be free to move a little in the phenolic bar that holds them. 73 de W3NU, ex-CE WPIC Sharon, PA until Cumulus flushed me down the toilet. On 3/22/2010 19:59, Bernie Doran wrote: Hi Bob. if that is all it is, it is almost too easy, forget the broken thumb screw, go to the local hardware or NAPA or? and get a 6 32 tap and proper size drill and just drill and tap a new hole somewhere and use a 6 32 screw ( of any type) if you are fussy use a allen head, then if you are like me you forget where you put the allen wrenchs when you need them. [AMRadio] moderator's rant
I hope all of you understand that the current political climate is probably leading to this type of exchange and frustration. At least that is what I believe. The one thing we try to do here is be reluctant to stop any conversation if we can avoid it. I have my political opinions but do my best to keep them private here. I urge all of you to do the same. If we get too deep into the weeds, the list will go away and I don't want to see that and I feel that many of you hold the same opinion. So let's be respectful of each other and work to bridge the divide. Re: [AMRadio] Need BC-1G 833 Tube Socket
When making the assembly of the two filament sockets on the bottom of an 833, I feel it is important to make it so at least one of them is floating and can move back and forth a bit in a slot or oversize hole in the insulating bar. That allows some wiggling during tube insertion and removal, and allows the spacing between the pins to expand and contract with temperature. If both are firmly fixed in spacing it could result in cracked tubes.
