[AMRadio] Heathkit DX-60 Saga
Well, I replaced all resistors in the mod circuit, not that many, all P.S. caps. the cathode res. for the 6146 final. No change, but no regrets either. They are old. There was a strange arcing on the filter can from day one. Thought it was poor solder connections, wrong. I replace the caps with tubular ones I had "in stock". It arced once but in a different spot, where I grounded the caps on the chassis. The voltages around the audio preamp tube are good. But on the modulator there is full plate voltage on the grid and the cathode resistors overheat and try to burn again. With the 6DE6 mod tube out there is no problem. I still suspect a shorted tube, even thought no short with a static test with the V.O.M. It could break down with nearly 600 VDC on it. A new tube is on the way. Once the unit is repaired and tested and burned in, I will install the T/R accessory kit that an Angel of a Ham sent to me. He/she will remain anonymous for the time being. The crystals arrived today and the DX-60 tunes up nicely and on frequency. But the modulation is horribly distorted. I put in a new 12AX7 preamp and checked voltages. All OK. I bypassed the preamp stage and subbed in a known good amp. Still bad. Re: [AMRadio] The Art of Ragchewing
I enjoy VHF/UHF-FM, and of course the more relaxed QSOs on HF/AM/SSB.I have been involved with the quick TR QSOs as well as long "key downs" on all the above modes. It's funny to me that some folks seem to key down longer and speak more slowly on SSB, and even slwwweeer on AM. I am new to AM and love it. I do not understand why AM is even more relaxed than SSB. It's not a bad thing, please don't take this as a complaint or anything like that. Is AM audio so warm it is that soothing? Probably. The old modified AM Broadcast Transmitters sound great, and my goal is to have one this year. I have wanted one long before I was a ham. I used to have two 1kW units and did not do much with them and got rid of them. DUMB! My search for old transmitters is going pretty well. I have a recently retired 5kW Harris AM Transmitter in my garage, and I am trying to sell it, and then turn around and by an old Gates, Collins, RCA, or McMartin 1kW unit. I must have one! My goal is this year. The Harris is next to impossible to convert, and would be extremely inefficient and expensive to even run the filaments, not to mention it wants 120/208 3-phase power!I will "see you" on AM and we will warm up some tubes. The law is the law. Somebody is not doing their job as this is allowed to continue proliferating. The state is legally obligated to properly install its traffic signals so that they don't generate interference. No kidding! Do we honestly think ALL licensed HAMs adhere to the legal limit rule any more than most CBers stay at or below 4 watts? There are always some who go well over the legal limit. Stop the damned thread on this now. Get back to the topic of AM, period... When members decide to degrade others on this list, it's time to stop it, or send them down the road. w5ami - Brian PS: YES, I am the owner of the AMRadio list, and have been for nearly 15 years. That's right. That's up to the FCC if they operate it in an illegal fashion. --- On Tue, 3/16/10, D. Chester wrote: From: D. Let the broadcast people take care of the problem, if there is one. The commercial FM and AM bands have degenerated to little more than a vast wasteland anyway. I'm far more concerned about all the consumer crap on the market to-day that dumps buzzies and hash all over the HF spectrum, with apparent impunity .
