RE: [AMRadio] 40M AM?

2008-02-18 Thread Glenn Zemanek
That is not necessarily so. If you wanted a ticket you would have done what
was needed to pass the exam. If it was essay and drawing schematics you
would have learned that. Now it is multiple choice questions. So you study
the multiple choice questions. That seems to be the trend in most
educational endeavors. The multiple choice exam is the examination method
of choice. Just because you took and passed a multiple choice exam does not
mean that you are not interested in learning more about radio. I passed the
extra multiple choice exam; to me it is a hobby and I try and learn as much
as I can by reading and asking questions. Would the amateur radio world be
better off if the exam was much more difficult and less people joined the
ranks--I think not. I got my ham ticket when I was in my fifties. I had
the money to acquire a substantial amount of equipment and I grew nostalgic
for tube type of equipment so I started collecting boat anchors. I will
learn how to work the radios and keep them repaired. I know who to call for
help and know when I am in over my head. If you want something badly enough
you will do what it takes. If you want excuses not to upgrade you will find
them also.

You wouldn't have survived the 50's, when you had to actually draw a
schematic, answer questions with a short essay and rely on actual
knowledge in comparison to a multiple guess question type of test, with
a published question and answer pool.

There's simply no reason, or excuse why someone can't upgrade from
General, these days.

The ARRRghL has petitioned the FCC to create the current 'dumbed-down'
mind-set of the so-called 'ham' of today.

RE: [AMRadio] To ship or not to ship

2007-11-26 Thread Glenn Zemanek
I had an R390a shipped by UPS. They managed to bend the front panel. It
worked but a crystal filter was bad also. They really had to drop it from a
height. I put in a claim and the adjuster showed up and took pictures and
left. I got a letter a couple of days later stating that the claim was
denied. I called the guy who sold it to me who told me he just dropped the
R390a at a UPS store for packing and shipping. They originally denied the
claim as item improperly packed They eventually coughed up about $450.00
when they were given the proof that their UPS store had packed it. My other
claims from UPS have been denied as improperly packed item. I have had
better luck with Fed Ex.

I am thinking seriously about selling my Valiant and NC-183 and wonder if I
should take a chance on shipping either or both? The Valiant is very heavy
as you all know and the NC-183 is no light weight. If I don't agree to ship
it will certainly limit the possibility of selling them. What do ya'll have
to say? I received both via FedEx or UPS, I don't remember now, and both
were undamaged.

Thanks for any input..

RE: [AMRadio] US Constitution? What's that?

2007-10-07 Thread Glenn Zemanek
I disagree I like to hear some good political arguments and banter over the
air. Lots of guys that are well educated and have interesting opinions and
experiences. Get tired of hearing about antennas, tubes and rigs. That is
why I like the AMers in the Northeast --lots of other interesting rag chew
topics.

The argument that the Constitution is a living document like taught in Law
School is Orwellian newspeak. It is really a dead document if it can
constantly be adjusted and interpreted --it serves no purpose.

Part of my political rant- feel that I have the right as I am leaving on my
5th combat tour as a GI so others can speak openly here at least for awhile
longer.

Also what is the definition of reasonable??

I happen to think that POLITICS and RELIGION should NOT be gotten into
over the AIR NOR on maillists.

It provokes things beyond REASONABLE limits.

RE: [AMRadio] AM in Iraq?

2007-10-07 Thread Glenn Zemanek
The first time I was in Afghanistan before Iraq kicked off I brought a Ten
Tec Jupiter with me. It was 100 watts and had more power than the HF radio
at the time we were using. I had some connectors and cables put together and
used the Ten Tec on SSB with the encryption module going into the mike
jack. The ten Tec was Mars capable and I was able to get into the military
freqs. Worked great wish I took pictures for ten tec. I brought an SGC 2020
with me the second time in AF and used the 2 letter call before my call sign
with a small ladder line dipole and tuner and hooked up to a military
battery a BB5590 for the 12V. Reached some Europe and Norway and Belorusse
and a couple of other countries. I tried to make it back to the US had guys
listening but no luck. The last couple of times in Iraq I did not have a
radio with me. The Iraq govt there shut down Ham Radio. The bad guys use
cellphones and internet not HF. I did not try on AM. The HF radio we use
is automatic link --a handshake between trans and receiver--not used much
works good low power. I knew some guys did a 6000mile test shot on less than
a watt. Everything is FM and Sat Com.

I do have an official call sign given to me by the Kyrgyzstan Radio Ministry
and in the process of putting a shack together there for use when I visit. I
will try an AM shot from there when I get there. Chris w2JBL formerly KD2XA
is the AMer that has helped me a lot

When I was there, (04-05) I was able to get a local call (YI9HYS) and
operate using a kenwood TS-520 that I bought off line and had shipped over.
No AM
operations that I noticed, other than Shortwave broadcasting. Though I
mostly stuck to 20 meters SSB/CW.

Besides broadcasting I never ran into an AM ops. Though if it was an old
buzzard in another language, I wouldn't have been able to tell the
difference.

I THINK the tactical coms are all FM now.

Glen,

I was wondering if you could describe to the group how AM might take part
in
military communications in Iraq.

Also, is there any Ham Radio operating being allowed?
