There is a large group of AM stations on 7160 right now.

The calls I have heard thus far from my Jackson, Mississippi qth are:

K0EOO, WA3HUZ, WF2U, K4DEE, and WA3VJB. There are at least 2 other stations
that I can't hear.

It's almost like listening on 10 meters, as there is no SSB qrm at the
moment, just some static.

How about a National NC-300 or 303? - great vintage looks, excellent tuning
feel, very good performance on AM, CW, and SSB.
Or a Hallicrafters SX-101? also very handsome and a good performer Or if you
want something that isn't 19" wide and 75 lbs, but is about the same width
as the Ranger, a Drake 2B.

OK, that didn't make your choices easier, did it? But I think these three
are much better rcvrs than your list below. I like the HQ-170 for SSB but
never enjoyed it for AM.

I couldn't make up my mind either - here's what I ended up with for my main
vintage operating position - http://www.virhistory.com/ham/photos/shack3.jpg

Subject: Re: [AMRadio] 75A2

In experience I have had with tubes checking good but not working in a radio
had a lot to do with the design of the circuit they are in.
If the circuit doesn't take into account things like plate to grid
capacitance and such properly, they can be a problem for high gain tubes.
There is a lot of discussion about this if you want to read it. I had an FM
tuner that used a 6BE6 mixer that would not work with tubes that were in the
normal range on my tester. If I put one with low transconductance in the
circuit, it worked fine. Some tubes would even cause an oscillation if they
had high enough gain.
I did a little circuit redesign and solved the problem of high gain tubes.
I don't think you will experience anything like that with a
75A2 so if you find a bad tube with a tester, chances are it will be bad in
the radio.

One of the things about using a tube tester is you can find shorted tubes
before you put them in your radio. If they are shorted screen to G1 you can
cause damage to some radios. A tester will find this type of problem before
you put the tube in the socket.

I use a Western Electric KS-15650 L2 tester. It is a Hickok and is a
transconductance tester. Don't get one that measures emission, look for one
that tests transconductance. There are several that will, made by Hickok,
B&K and the venerable I-177 made for the military by Hickok and others. One
of the things about tube testers is if you get a late model it may not have
the test setting for the old tubes. If you get an early model it may not
have the sockets and test setting for some of the newer tubes. So I suggest
you find an emission tester of later manufacture that has the obsolete tube
data available.

Are tube testers the end all of repairs? No but used correctly and knowing
their limitations, they are a useful tool.

It's certainly not a bad idea to have replacements if you do end up needing
them (you will, someday), just not advisable to swap them wholesale as
others have said. The radio itself is still the best tube tester IMO, once
you get it running it's easier to compare results through performance. Tube
testers are fine for a quick look and for showing some obvious faults, but
I've had two instances in the last 2 years where tubes tested great and
showed no problems, but didn't work properly in the set. I've also had
receivers that worked great despite having some tubes that tested low on the
scale.

It takes right at 90 volts for that rectifier to conduct. When it starts
conducting the caps will start forming. If you are going to form the caps
in this fashion, I would pull all other tubes and put the variac at 90
volts. wait about 5 mins and raise it to 100 volts. Put your finger on the
cap to see if it is heating. If so, back it down about 5 volts and wait for
the cap to cool. When it cools then start up with voltage again monitoring
the temp of the cap. If it gets hot, wait for it to cool. That cap should,
if it is good, form in about 20 minutes like this. If it doesn't, get a new
one. If it does, check it in about a year because it probably will go bad
by then.

I wouldn't replace the tubes wholesale, you probably will throw away some of
good tubes. If you have a signal generator you can tell pretty well how
good they are by the sensitivity of the radio. If I remember right the
fuse in that thing is 2 amp. With the volume turned up loud it probably
will pull near 1.5 amps through the fuse, so you variac meter should show
about that amount.

Re: [AMRadio] 75A-2 power consumption

2009-02-19 Thread John Carrington, M.D.
I'm wondering if I don't see any filament glow with that tube... I'm going
to be tempted to bite on the Ebay ads that just replace all tubes... the
set for this receiver is 69 bucks.

I thought it was closer to 90v to fire that tube, Brian - maybe I'm

Could be Todd. The one graph I found appeared to show it conducting at
about 62 volts, but I may have misinterpreted it.

Thanks man!

Yep... that tube socket says 5y3gt...
I plugged in a small variac, 7.5amp... and the ammeter just barely budged on
the 2amp scale maybe it's not working...

Hi All,

I have a friend in Oregon that I'm trying to help via email, who is bringing
his A2 up slowly with a variac, after being stored for about 12+ years.
Anyone know what he should expect to see in regard to current draw on the AC
ammeter built on the Variac? He is at 75 volts now with very little draw,
filaments on, and dial lights glowing. I suspect the B+ rectifier (5Y3, I
think) should be conducting at this point too. When he gets to a full 115
volts, what should he expect to see on the ammeter if all is well.
