Todd, or anyone, what is the activity like on 40M AM these days? Is
there any? When I get my AM station on the air, I will likely be
sending a fair amount of time on 40 (if there is activity) as my
current antenna is a resonant 40M dipole. I've never used SSB or any
modes other than CW and RTTY/PSK on 40M so I have no clue what to
expect. I've been able to use a transmatch on this 40M dipole
before
to get favorable results on 80M CW/DATA but it is a cloudburner for
the most part and only good for regional work. I'm going to be
putting up new antennas this spring.

I'm with you in principal, but what you are asking is similar to
 going after

Secondly, when a class action goes after a manufacturers pocket
 book, it
would not be unreasonable for that manufacturer to go public and
 the media

 say: this
is the group that is trying to stop us from making baby monitors.

Some of the conversations on amateur radio are nasty, immature,

The U.S. has been pressuring Canada to tighten up border security and

and they refused him entry because the
 computer showed
that he had been busted at age 19 for under-age drinking in
 Tennessee. What
was really so stupid about that was that it should have been a
 moot point
since 19 would have been legal drinking age in Canada, and when he
 tried to
enter the country, he was 24, well past the drinking age.
 Besides, what
does under-age drinking 5 years ago have to do with being a risk
 to Canada?
Makes me wonder if it would be worth travelling from distant
 reaches of the
US, if you could unexpectedly be refused entry because of some
 hassle you
might have forgotten all about. Most of us probably have something
 trivial
like that on our past record.

 OK, this is funny:

WWV Taken Over By Clear Channel

Word on the street is that the National Institute of Standards and
Technology is close to signing a Lease Management Agreement with
Clear
Channel Communications, Inc. for its flagship Time and Frequency
 stationWWV, Fort Collins, Colorado.

Clear Channel Radio's consultants have demanded some changes to the
sound of the station, which broadcasts time of day, standard
frequency, and other information 24 hours per day, saying that the
 old format is
 dull and predictable.

Additionally, WWV's traditional modulation level of 50 percent for
the
steady tones, 50 percent for the BCD time code and 75 percent for the
voice announcements was deemed not loud enough. The station will
 reformulate itself as The Tick.

WWV's program director Hickory Zeitgeist says that the station has
already added some snappy new announcements to the rotation, which
can
be heard by clicking the clock in this link:

  Hi Mark,

The folks I am talking about banning from hamfest use of
 scooters are
  various
dealers and a few others that we all know around here. They
 are
  constantly
zipping around the fests with sometimes little regard for the
 safety of
  others.
I have been around long enough to be able to tell when someone
 really
  needs a
scooter, and by the way, these folks that need them are either
 on a 3
  wheeler
or in a motorized wheel chair. Of one of those folks gets out
 of a chair
  or
off a 3 wheeler and walks around, I have no problem at all with
 that. I
  am
talking about the 2 wheel scooters and motor powered bicycles
 that few in
  need
folks would ever be able to ride, and even if they could, they
 would not
  be
riding them in the manner described above.

I am afraid that one day, someone is going to get hurt by one
 of these
  OTHER
folks and a lawsuit will ensue. That would be the end of
 hamfests around
  here,
or at least wind up with the knee jerk reaction of banning ALL
wheeled vehicles regardless of the health condition of the user.

Another thing is that most hamfests allow the free movement of
 cars and
trucks during the hamfest. If you have ever been to Dayton, you
 know that
  on the
days that the grounds are open to hamfest goers, movement of
 99% of all
  vehicles
is totally banned during hamfest hours. If you have a flea
 market spot,
  you
had better be in your spot by the given time and be prepeared
 to stay
  there
until the gates close. Emergencies are handled on a case by
 case basis,
  but if
the same person states that he or she has an emergency too
 often, they
  are going
to get kicked out or refused permission to move at the least.
 Scooters
  and
such are banned except for actual medical need during show
 hours and as
  far as I
am concerned, should be banned at all times.

  73,

  John, W4AWM

Hi to all. Maybe someone has had a similar problem and can give me
a hand. My ART-13 works fine on the lower frequencies, below 6
Mcs. But above 6 Mcs, no grid drive. So, problem seems to be in
the 2nd multiplier stage. I've done all the usual things, changed
tubes, made resistance measurements, from the tube socket,
etc.All was within specs. Also, someone suggested maybe a leaky
coupling cap between the 1st and second multipliers. So, I
replaced the cap by wiring a new one into an electrically

There seem to be a number of interesting  AM, build-your-
 own/restoration
BoatAnchor (manufacture specific) nets functioning out there.  I?m
sureDuane has many of them in his head but there may be a few
 obscure ones as
 well.  It would be handy to have a listing of the nets;
  frequencies, times,
 days/dates and purpose, mode.
Unless anyone has such a list already I would be happy to collect
emailsfrom people on them and generate a list back to the group.
 If you wish to
send them directly send emails to:

 Good Morning AM-ers:

 I just read Bill's (KB3DKS) post concerning 250 watt
operation of the BC-1T. I'm probably entering in the
middle of a thread, but what the heck.

Two years ago I adopted a BC-1G. Instead of using
series resistors, I opted to use a Variac. Details of
that modification and other information of potential
interest to BC-1 users was recently posted at the
 following link:

 http://pages.prodigy.net/w4qcu/Gatespage.htm

Who has made similar posts? I'm interested in finding
 out what others have done.

My BC-1G is on 75 meter AM just about every day.

 Keep those 833s glowing!

(1/4) fourth, etc..

Whenever I begin hearing reasonable SSB signals, I'll monitor

let fly a cq or two on a regular basis.

Here's hoping for band conditions good enough to permit some AM

I suggest that stations in the Eastern Time Zone select two
frequencies, stations in the Central Zone another pair,
stations in the Mountain Zone a third and stations in the
  Pacific Zone a fourth.

That way we could reduce interference to each other and move

I'm hearing more and more Extra class AM'ers expressing
their intent to appear on 3600-3700 the minute the
expanded phone band opens on the 15th of December.

Frequencies I hear discussed are 3685, and down on the low
end near 3610. No need for everyone to congregate on one
frequency. Why not make it a point to start up right away
on several frequencies spread uniformly throughout the
band, and each station periodically shift around from one
QSO to another, so that all the QSO frequencies remain in
use into the wee hours, but allowing everyone to
participate in the QSO on each of the frequencies.

Let's make it more like the etiquette of a successful
house party. Instead of everyone standing around the
entire evening confined to one small group, be sociable
and continue circulating from one group to another for the
   duration.

WATSA y'all? You got less than a month to upgrade to
Extra if necessary, and to get the rig and antenna tuned
up and working on the low end of the band!

I like the bubble wrap stuff... then some rigid insulation ... then a
box with a from to addresses on the outside of the box and wraped
with clear packing tape . This box gets nested inside another box with
a thick layer of heavy cardboard or more insulation.. fer
boatanchors.. Usally there is room inside of the unit -- pull the
tubes, wrap them up in old blankies/towles/rags etc , bag them (or box
them) and stuff them in the radio like a turkey. You dont want to give
anything a chance to move around.. Big iron should get detached so it

never, never use peanuts on radio packaging!.
newspaper and bubble wrap. foam is good too.
when a box is dammaged the peanuts fall out and there
goes your padding. the rest is down hill from there.
and newspaper absorbs water so I use that often.

Subject: [AMRadio] DC Load
To: amradio@mailman.qth.net

A local ham SK built himself a variable DC load which I recently
 found in
the N3BM estate stuff. The ham was W3QNI. QNI worked for Western
Electricand was a master builder. He must have died 10 or 15 years
 ago. I have one
of his transmitters and it is almost a work of art. This Variable
 DC Load
 is no different.

So this is an aluminum chassis with 2 transformers, 2 tube sockets
 and 2
meters mounted on it. Controls are simple--one on/off toggle and
 one pot
labeled ADJ LOAD--MIN--MAX. There are two binding posts on the
 front apron
labeled positive and negative.. The Western Electric meters are
 mounted on a
phenolic panel that sticks up above the controls. The left hand
 meter is
scaled 0-30 VOLTS DC X100. The right hand meter is 0-300MA. A
 label across
the top of the panel says VARIABLE DC LOAD 2500V 300MA MAX. The
 two tube
sockets are empty. They are the large old EFJ ceramic sockets for
 twist-lock
tubes like 203, 211, 805, etc. There are no grid and plate cap
connectionsso the sockets must have been intended for single-ended
 tubes. The socket
connections are wired in parallel--plate to plate, grid to grid
 and fil to
 fil.

One transformer has 150V/50ma and 6.3V 1.5A secondaries. The 6.3V
 just runs
the pilot lamp. The 150V is wired, with a silicon diode,
 electrolytic cap
and two big ceramic resistors into the circuit with the load
 adjustment pot.
The other transformer is unmarked, but it provides filament
 voltage to the
tube sockets (in parallel) and the center tap is connected into
 the load
adjustment circuit. Filament voltage at the socket terminals
 measures 10VAC.

I went through my files and found a photocopy of a very similar
circuitusing 6BG6 tubes in parallel. But I guess I'm not sure what
 tubes this one
was intended to use--likely something that is expensive these
 days. I'd like
to put this thing to it's intended use. But I don't want to put
 $100 worth
of tubes into it. What are the options? Any ideas appreciated.

  Hi

I don't think it's a good idea to call it amateur
packing as there should be a better AMERICAN word for
  such way of packing.

Amateur (originally in French) means non-professional,
that is, an activity not paid by an ordinary salary.

But amateur packing (like amateur radio) can be much
better executed than professional packing, althout not
  necessarily at competitive costs.

Just my 2 cent$... when we suffer from
misconsideration as Radio Amateurs (or Radio Amateur
Operators) and some prefer the Ham Radio designation.

I always thought you had to discharge though a high value
 resistance to
 avoid
damaging arcs that would hurt the surface you were discharging
 through a
 plasma
 arc.

I do remember using a shorting stick in a job I had 20 years ago.

I don't know about a high resistance, but I would be careful
 shorting out
HV oil caps directly. If a high value capacitor, 25 mfd or more
 is fully
charged near its maximum voltage rating, sometimes a direct short
 can blow
the terminal connection open inside the case and ruin the
 capacitor. I
would suggest a power resistor of several hundred ohms rigidly
 mounted on
the business end. First, discharge through the resistor, then
 directly
(just in case that resistor happened to open, per Murphy's law).

Also, I have noticed that HV oil caps will sometimes rebound
 after a
complete dischage and unexpectedly deliver a nasty shock sometime
 later.

Has anyone made a meter shunt for an RF ammeter? I see no
 reason it would be
different than a regular AC or DC meter shunt, is that correct?
 I have a 5
amp RF thermocouple meter and would like to extend it to about
 25 amps.

I think there might be a couple of things to consider in such a
 scenario.

One is - for most 'regular' meter shunts, they are simply a very
 low-ohm
calibrated power resistor. And generally the drop accross them at
full-rated current (50 amps, say) is measured in the millivolt
 range: 25 -
 20 - 100 - 300 etc.

RF Ameters, on the other hand, use a thermocouple element which
 is
heated by a small resistance wire through which the RF passes -
 there is
no 'drop' measured electrically, rather the temperature rise of
 the
resistance element is used - so the 'cuurent' meter is actually
 reading a
few MVDC coming from the TC junction in the shunt (which it's not).

If you insert another actual resistance-type shunt around a
 thermocouple
unit, it would have to still drop enough RF to provide the full-
 scale EMF
accross the heating wire. So if the the meter is 5 Arf full-
 scale, your
shunt must drop a 5th at 25 Arf.

(HEY!!! Just what are you doing on the air that need 25 fargin'
 AMPS of
 antenna current...?);}

The other thing I'm wondering is - what effect all that Stuff
 (in the
feedline, basically) is going to have on SWR - production of
 harmonics and
 spurs - etc.

I'd be tempted to just build a simple pickup like the MFJ
 Balanced-line
ammeter has, and use a DC opamp driver to provide full-scale
 readings in
 the ammeter of your choice.

   Just my 200 millidollar...

 Cheers

 Hi:
I am finally building the power supply for my ART-13 transmitter
 and
would like your opinion on a thing or two. Thanks to Ronnie Hull,
 I
have a 5 - 25 henry swinging choke for the HV supply. I also
 have,
 thanks to an old TX-1, a 400 ma smoothing choke, 5.5 henry @ 400
 ma. I
wanted to use something a little larger, maybe 10 or 12 henry.
 I'm
using 866 or maybe 3B28 rectifiers and 4 mfd and 8 mfd filters.
 Do you
think the 5.5 henry choke will be sufficient?

I also need another 5 - 25 swinging choke in the 250 ma range for
 the
400 volt supply. It too will use another 5.5 henry choke if it is
 determined that is sufficient.

Any and all advice, opinions, criticism or comments are welcome.

 Thanks,
 Rick/K5IZ

Just use the volt/amps rating for the impedance. R = E/I

your Gastenna gets too warm or fires up, you can dose it... klc

If high RF fields in the HF bands caused cancer, most of us would
 have been
in the oncology ward years ago and I wouldn't be here to write
 this. The
same goes for people working in broadcast engineering, especially
 at high
power shortwave stations such as the Voice of America and Radio
 Moscow (now
the Voice of Russia). A lot of that cancer scare crap came from a
book
published about 25 or 30 years ago called The Zapping of America
 by Paul
Brodeur. Much of what was written in that book was pure
 speculation, but the
politicians picked up on it and saddled us with all kinds of
environmentalrestrictions related to RF energy. Who was this Paul
 Brodeur? He was neither
an engineer nor a physician. He was a staff writer for The New
 Yorker, a
 LITERARY magazine!

What is indisputable is that high RF fields will cause tissue
heating.
That's how a microwave oven cooks your food! Years ago, tower
climbers
working at FM or TV sites would report a sensation of warmth if
 they got too
close to the antenna. THAT could be dangerous, due to the
 overheating of
tissues and body fluids, resulting in thermal injuries. Current
 FCC and OSHA
regulations require such stations to greatly reduce power, switch
 to an
auxiliary antenna, or leave the air if someone is climbing the
 tower. And
working in a tuning house of an AM station running 50 kW or higher
 can be
dangerous, unless the transmitter is powered down, as the RF can
 arc to
someone who gets too close to hot components, causing a
 potentially lethal
burn. But it is highly unlikely that any harm came to Finns who
 lived maybe
100 or more miles away from the Soviet radar. One of the Soviet
 sites was
believed to be in Minsk, which is in Belarus, at least 600 miles from
 Finland.

The Russian Woodpecker was a terrible nuisance, especially on 15
 and 20
meters. I certainly don't miss it!

Another couple of questions relative to relays this time.

Some of my antenna relays have protective diodes and some don't.
 If a power
supply were to be used only for switching relays, could the
 protective diode
be placed at the output of the power supply, rather than at the relay?

Also, looking at a couple of Amphenol coax relays I have here,
 there is not
only a protective diode, but a (very) small disc ceramic capacitor
 across
 the coil.

 Further protection?

In the discussion about systems letting us go portable
around the yard and keep up with an AM QSO, does
anyone have experience with the wi-fi systems as to
 whether they can be adapted?

Apparently there is an older 802 type of system being
superceded, and the older ones are really cheap. They
provide RF coverage, but I'm not sure what would be
needed at the other end to obtain the basic receive
 audio.

Same with these whole house TV remote control units.
They are marketed to people with only one LNB for the
rooftop dish, who wish to control the dedicated box's
output split across televisions in several locations
in the house. Seems that stream, too, could be adapted
to carry a basic audio channel.

I'm using an old set of infrared headphones that the
earpieces wore out on. Took the receiver guts out of
the thing, put it all in a pager-sized plastic box
that holds a 9V battery and has a headphone jack on
it. The transmit end, normally driven by the
television's audio output, now is driven by a tap from
the mixing console (which, in turn, has receive audio
 on it).

Range is pretty good. I've put the transmitter in a
window so it can see most of the yard, and it's
maybe 100 feet around, more at night.

 I wonder what the other 550,000 U. S. amateurs, who didn't
 respond,
 think about it. As of 2/12/06, 658,883 U. S. amateurs. Using Paul's
numbers (695 against) indicates approx. .1% of the entire amateur

 Hello All,

I'm just starting to discover the joy of AM, but sadly can't
 find
many people to share it with. My search for AM activity on the
 bands
has come up with naught but SW stations on 40m. What frequencies
 are AM
operators active on on the bands? Are there any daily nets for
 AM?
I've tried listening for the K6HQI memorial net on 20m, but I've
 not
 heard anything.

 Thanks,
 John

 FS: Boatanchors and Miscellaneous

Hallicrafters SX-100. Looks great and works better
than it ought to for its age. $200

Check this out. Brand new Millen 90651 grid dip
oscillator in original box and perfect condition.
With all coils, manuals and packaging. I don't think
this has ever been out of the box. Like a time
 machine. $99

And another one Brand new Millen 92101 R9'er
HF preamp with 46910 (27-32mc) coil in original box in
 perfect condition. Coils 46915 (19-22mc), 46906
 (48-55mc), 46920 (13-15mc) and 46996 (TV Channel 6)
are in separate faded red Millen boxes. With all
manuals and packaging. I don't think this has ever
been out of the box either. $79

And just when you thought you'd seen it all
I think this is a WWII Japanese volt-ohm meter in a
metal case with bakelite front panel. Lettering is
engraved (or stamped?) Japanese markings. Volts-Ohms
-Amps are marked V-R-mA in addition to their Japanese
markings. Paper tag on end with Japanese writing on it
is probably calibration dates but not on our calendar.
Beautiful original condition. Write for photos.
Looking for best offer over $200 before I put it on
 eBay.

Hammarlund HQ-180C in great-looking condition. It
works reasonably well after it is warmed up but the
calibration is off by about 2kc. all original. $250

Hammarlund large speaker for HQ-180 and similar.
Nice shape but some scuffs along front trim. $115

A rare one... TMC GPR-90 matching speaker. Some
scuffs on paint but nice overall condition. Driver
is Jensen. Grille cloth is dark, unlike the one
 shown in this link:
 http://oldradios.co.nz/gallery/anchors/TMC%20GPR%2090,%20GSB-
 1%20SSB%20+%20Speaker.html$145

(SSB Receiver Detector/Slicer). Case paint has some
dings. Missing some screws and knob from lever
 switch. As-is. $59

it but that is missing. Also missing are almost all
the spare parts except for the resistors, pots and 2
coils. Still solidly built after 64 years. $39

Gonset Super 6 BCB to HF converter. Has some paint

I don't seem to have a problem with the signal level going in to
 the sound
card. On strong signals WinPSK tells me to reduce the input level.
 But with
this setup I am able to receive PSK signals I cannot hear in the
 stationspeaker.

You are getting quite a voltage step-up with that arrangement.
 You will
