Re: [AMRadio] Schematic or Manual for National RCE Receiver

2010-07-06 Thread Larry Szendrei

Hello - does anyone have a digital copy of the manual or a schematic
 for a National RCE receiver?
 Tnx and 73,

 Dave N7RK

Hi Dave,

I have a hard copy of the schematic at home I can scan and send you - but
please give me until the weekend to do so.

I also have what I believe to be an RCE (which is why I've collected the
information), that I purchased at the AWA conference flea a few years ago.

Re: [AMRadio] Antennas

2010-06-22 Thread Larry Szendrei
There have been some interesting cases with short loaded antennas
in the BC band, the bandwidth has occasionally been so narrow that the AM
sidebands become attenuated! Not going to see that effect in the amateur
bands unless someone is running an antenna only a few feet long!!

Correct. This has been observed on my 75M AM mobile signal, with reports
of one sideband being attenuated relative to the other. Antenna is a
Webster bandpanner (a few feet long).

Yep, vestigial sideband.

Nope, you're older, but I probably have older gear!

The first time I got a report like that I didn't think much of it. The

make a classic plate-modulated class C transmitter have asymmetric
sidebands, and wasn't coming up with anything for a satisfying
explanation (mobile transmitter was/is an Elmac A-54H, class C 807

[AMRadio] Want to Borrow Original Elmac Manuals

2010-06-15 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi All,

Bob W9RAN has agreed to send me his original manuals for the Elmac AF-67 and
AF-68.

I am looking for someone or someones that have original manuals for the PMR
xx and any other Elmac manuals
that I may borrow to scan. I will be happy to pay postage each way and will
also send the contributor or contributors
a cd with all the manuals on it.

My intention is to get decent scans unlike the DJvue ones currently on BAMA.
No offense meant to the person that scanned them or to the DJvue format.

I am mainly interested in the matching receivers for the AF-67 and AF-68 and
power supplies. However if there are other Elmac manuals please let me know.

I will also print a dozen of each and send to Mike N8ECR who runs the
Mighty Elmac Net so he will have some on hand to give out.

I will also be happy to email copies of the manuals to anyone who wishes to
add them to their website.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [AMRadio] Heathkit DX-60 grid current drops

2010-05-27 Thread Larry Szendrei
As Jim says, you may be losing drive to the final grid because the drive
signal is going away. But that's not all that can go wrong. Make sure the
final grid bias resistor hasn't drifted off-tolerance or changing value as
it heats up. If it is, replace it. I have also had bad final tubes (pair
of 6146s in a DX-100) create the symptoms you describe. Originally I
thought for sure the problem was with the drive signal, but that wasn't
what it turned out to be.

73 es GL,
-Larry/NE1S

Brian the final is losing drive from the driver/buffer/VFO. Check all
tubes first then if that doesn't fix it you will be troubleshooting
under the chassis to find out what components may be changing value.

 Jim/W5JO

My Heathkit DX-60 grid current drops after a couple of minutes and
will keep dropping more rapidly as I increase drive level. Eventually
the tube plates glow red. I am tuning by the book.
 Any ideas?

Hi Todd and All,

Instead of re-inventing the wheel why don't we use one of our own who is
already in the business?

I refer to Tom N0JMY at Hayseed Hamfest. The name does NOT reflect the
quality of his products. He is building custom electrolytics but certainly
could come up with a list of common caps.

Tom's a good guy with many satisified customers. I believe we should try to
keep this kind of products from within if possible.

Sorry for the multiple list posting, but time is short and max input is
 desired.

Got a call from a friend this afternoon who is talking with a
capacitor manufacturer about producing some caps for the radio, guitar
amp, and audio crowd. We've talked about this in the past but never
got to it. Now it looks like it will happen.

The question is, what values would be the most handy to have supplied
into the future for restoring old gear? Obviously we can't do a lot of
oddball values as we're mainly looking for values that will sell well
and be attractive from a production prospective. The few that popped
 to mind for me were:

.1, .01, and .47 mfd at both 400 and 600 vdc. I also specified axial
lead instead of the radial leads found on Orange drops since axial
leads are better suited to our needs. I'm looking for other values
that are likely to be encountered often enough to warrant production.
Maybe 6-12 different values to choose from. These would be caps used
for bypassing and such, not filtering. I suspect we could get them
'banded' for the foil side as well if folks feel that is important
 enough.

The meeting is set for tomorrow, so timely input is critical. We're
*not* looking for a list of manufacturers who already make caps as we
believe more is better in this case. Some values are already getting
 difficult to find.

No worries there, Charlie. Rockwell Collins took a different approach
to supporting it's vintage equipment - the following is from
 www.collinsradio.org:

The Collins Collectors Association is licensed by Rockwell Collins to
reproduce and disseminate in electronic and written format, any such
Collins copyrighted documents related to Collins amateur radio products.
Such documents include, but are not limited to, product manuals,
schematics, test methods, service bulletins, advertising materials,
product catalogs, maintenance information and other technical and
product information related to Collins amateur radio products.
Rockwell extended the license agreement in 2001 to include all Collins
Commercial and Military equipment that can be used for amateur radio
purposes. The quality of the scanned manuals is excellent, and if you
need a Collins document that's not already posted, my buddy and Archives
Manager Larry, WA9VRH, will do everything possible to make it available.

That seems to me how it should be, but obviously each company has
control of it's own intellectual property rights. The challenge for
those who purchase such rights is the cost of legal action needed to
 enforce them.

Re: [AMRadio] Broadcast stuff

2010-03-19 Thread Larry Szendrei

When you think of it, what is up with ham radio, two guys trying to work
each other with qsb, qrm, using expensive equipment, big antenna's,
towers, etc, when you could do voice and video over the internet on a cheap
laptop or an I phone...on the beach, in the den, on a train, anyplace...

Four things (at least):

1. The challenge of communicating under uncertain/difficult conditions.

2. The communications systems we hams use are generally simple enough that
we can understand and engineer them ourselves. It's an appropriate level
of challenge - difficult enough to hold our interest, and yet not so
complicated that it's impossible for an individual to accomplish.

3. No dependance on infrastructure except (for those without emergency
power) AC power.

4. The nostalgia/romantic factor of older technology.

Modern technology is amazing and wonderful, and under most conditions, the
most practical when you are trying to just communicate. But I suspect
that's not why most people on this list are in amateur radio.

Re: [AMRadio] Low PWR FM Broadcaster

2010-03-16 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi Lee and all,

I have a 900MHZ set of cordless headphones that I put the transmitter in the
attic. Feed audio from the CCA Sunday net, DX-60 Net, CCA First Wednesday
net, Mighty Elmac net, NASCAR races and other things to it. We live on 6
acres and it does a pretty good job covering most of it. May need to move
the transmitter up higher on the tower from the attic but may look into a
killowatt amp for the 900 MHZ. Just kidding on the KW but moving the
transmitter higher would really help.

It's a great way to be outdooors working and still be listening to whatever
net etc.!

I use one around here. 100mw??? It has around 10 inches of antenna. I
use
it to broadcast throughout the house internet radio and also a MARS net or
 a
ham band QSO. That way I am not limited to hearing things at only one
 spot
in the home. Mine happens to have come from CC Crane with their logo on
 it.
It covers the house very nicely and sounds great, just like the audio was
put through wires. I use it all the time and love it.

In my opinion, the two changes that would make the most improvement to
our hobby would be:

1 Cease the marginalization of the AM mode and rightly consider it
another mode of phone operation that should not be limited to any
sub-band or minor portion of the total phone allocation regardless of
the bandwidth that it consumes. (Nobody's attacking the ESSB'ers)

AND

2 Require all contests to be restricted to a portion of all bands of

Other than that, quit making more stupid rules and leave us alone.

I'll probably word it about like that. I'm in the process of getting my
response together and since I'm a firm believer in call it like you see
it it'll be exactly what I think. Might not make me many friends in
Newington. G

The ARRL seems to be pushing digital modes and contesting and leaving us
AMers hanging out to dry. It's time to push back. To let them know that
we will no longer permit them to marginalize us. We are simply another
mode of phone operation, and entitled to the same consideration,
acceptance and respect as any other mode.

Without AM, there would be no other phone modes, because they're all
derived from AM. SSB is simply AM with some of its parts cut off.

Let's stand up for our mode, my fellow AMers. Don't just send your
comments to the published email addy, but send them individually to each
member of the Band Plan Committee as well. If we're going to save our
mode, we have to fight for it. Let us not lose it because of apathy.

Yeah, I'm an ARRL appointee, but that doesn't mean I agree with
everything they do. I'll go to war to save our mode, and if they want my
position over it, they're welcome to it.

The East Coast and Central sections run for 90 minutes in response to the
tremendous participation in those time zones. The remaining time zones
will be an hour. We encourage stations to check-in on AM using Collins and
other AM transmitters, new and
old. It's an opportunity to revel in this nostalgic mode, enjoy giving
vintage equipment a run, and sharing
some storytelling about classic vacuum tube homebrew and commercial designs.
Typically more than a
hundred stations take part in the evening's coast-to-coast AM event; by the
time it concludes at 10:00 PM
Local PST.

LISTEN for the following anchors and stop by to say hello, won't you? You
don't have to be running Collins
or vintage gear to be welcomed into the group.

7:00 PM-8:30 PM Local East Coast Time Anchor: Bob W0YVA

7:30 PM-9:00 PM Local Central Time Anchor: Jim W0NKL and Brian K0EFJ

8:00 PM-9:00 PM Local Mountain Time Anchor: K0OJ Jim and Chuck KD0ZS

8:00 PM-9:00 PM Local West Coast Time Anchor: WA6FIZ Mickey

We are still looking for additional anchors in the West Coast time zone.
Please contact me if you are interested!

2010-01-22 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi Jon,

Thanks for the tip! I had to go look and make sure but my player is an
Edison.. I bought it in Iowa in 1976 but it is not in pristine shape. The
lid needs work and the rest could just use refinishing. Someone later in
this thread mention the volume you could get from one of these and I agree.
I love the volumne control! For those of you that haven't seen one it's a
round puffy ball that slides up into the horn blocking the audio.

Really cool!

 Hi Bob,

Go ckeck out the local antique malls. We visit one in
 Princeton Il about 50
miles North of Peoria that have tons of 78's.

I am always looking for the 80 rpm's that are at least
 twice as thick for
 the windup phonographs.

If you can't find any there is an antique place here in

That may be the Difference.. its a CLUB Station with a License and a
TRUSTEE.. It is the responsibility for the Trustee to be the Control
operator and should be on location( notice I did not say in the Room with
the gear But Must be ONSITE)
an example would Be a club operating Field day. The Trustee of the Club call
is responsible. But usually if there is a Club member who is an extra and
they are operating in the Extra band.
would then be the Control operator On site. Usually the Club trustee is
operating at the site.

To answer your question YES in
 Mesquite. We have
the Police and Fire Corp were hams work alongside
the Police and Fire and have drills on the Police
and Fire Radios and Amateur. This is a very
progressive community. The city does own their own
gear for sure.Brian LOOK at VA.. Va has a Radio,
Amp and antenna in every hospital They have a VA
net weekly. Some VA centers do not have hams but
do have call signs and operate the net. The
Trustee of the station is responsible . They
operate just like the Red Cross and Salvation
 Army.

 Bob,

Don't forget these agencies you mentioned have
their OWN communication equipment, bought and paid
for by the public via taxes. That is why
volunteer hams have been used for decades to
provide communication via ham radio at or near
these agencies. Amateur radio has served the
public VERY well for decades in emergency
communications, and has always been on a volunteer
basis. Why does this need changing now?? Are
hams allowed to conduct drills on the police or
fire bands? Not that I'm aware of.

Why do the public service agencies need our ham
 frequencies now?

If we allow people to be paid money for operating
ham radio, we are losing the very threads the
founding fathers of amateur radio and the ARRL
stood for. What will be next? Dollars for
 working contests?

During an actual emergency of life or death,
anyone, including the Fire Chief can operate ANY
 radio, ham or otherwise...

2010-01-03 Thread Larry WA9VRH
HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

Welcome to the First of the FIRST WEDNESDAY AM NIGHT 2010!!!

Sponsored by the Collins Collectors Association.

Wednesday January 6th on 3880 kcs at 7:00 PM local East Coast time marks the
start of the latest
chapter of First Wednesday AM Night, drawing hundreds of vintage stations
from across the country.

2010-01-01 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi Bob and Allen,

Here is an ad fromQTH.com for a G76 and power supply. Please go QTH.com to
find under Antique radios.

FS Gonset G-76
I have 2 Gonest G-76 and one power supply/speaker. This is a compact 80-10
plus 6, AM/CW tube transceiver. They are both complete and one powers up and
receives pretty good. Haven't tried to transmit with it. All needs a good
cleaning inside and out. Faceplates are in pretty good shape, cabinets need
paint. Power supply is heavy so shipping all won't be cheap. Best offer over
$200 plus shipping.

detector to warm up and produce audio. It can not be for life as when this

energy or battery operation. perhaps it fools the detector into something

have seen where reduced voltage is recommended for standby is the 813, data
recommends 8 volt when on standby and I have never done that or seen one
used that way. So does anyone KNOW why national did this?I have never
seen this in Collins so it must be wrong HI Bernie W8RPW

Hi Bernie,

This has nothing to do with your excellent question, but I thought I'd
let you know I'm pretty sure I heard you last Thursday night down on 80M
(not 75M) AM talking to a VE3. Let me know if that was you.

I was just casually scanning for an AM QSO, on an old Sky Buddy, to
listen to while I stoked up the coal stove for the evening, and came
across you (if that was in fact you). Nice signal into Maine. You sound
younger on the air than you do on the reflector :-)

Re: [AMRadio] Muting the R390 on transmit

2009-12-02 Thread Larry Szendrei

Thanks for the reply, Grant. My R 390 doesn't mute when terminal 9 is
grounded. I have connected an alligator clip lead to terminal 9 and then
connected the other end of the clip lead to terminal 16 which is ground
and there is no effect. I can't figure out why there is no effect when
terminal 9 is grounded. What do you think, Grant? I do not have a manual
or schematic for the R390. 73, John, K5PGW

You didn't mention whether the Break In switch was on, which, as Grant
said, must be for it (=grounding the break-in terminal) to mute the
receiver. Or, maybe there is a problem in that circuit in your R390. I
used this function on my R390/URR, and it worked exactly as Grant
described.

[AMRadio] First Wednesday CCA AM Night! Dec.2nd LAST 1 in 2009!

2009-11-29 Thread Larry WA9VRH
FIRST WEDNESDAY AM NIGHT!!! Sponsored by the Collins Collectors Association.

Wednesday December 2nd, 2009 on 3880 kcs at 7:00 PM local East Coast time
marks the start of the latest
chapter of First Wednesday AM Night, drawing hundreds of vintage stations
from across the country.

Boy my ears are pinned back on this one. I need a 10 inch speaker for
my old HQ 129 speaker. The cone in the present one is just about gone.

So I thought about shellac and toilet paper or something similar, but am
not that good with my hands. So I looked a couple of places on the web.
I haven't looked for a speaker since about 1959, and needless to say,
one like I would like to have is nearly $100. Now am I crazy or is this
 high?

All I would like to have is a round, mid-range speaker that is 10 inches
in diameter which won't require I sell my home to buy. Can any one
steer me to a place other than what I find on the search engines. The
first 10 pages or so is all full of speaker sellers who pay to be listed
and list only stuff the audio nut would buy.

 Jeeze!

That thought crossed my mind Larry, but I always thought the price of

don't find anything, I will look around for someone that recones.

 Thanks for the suggestion

Yeah, when there's actually activity people gripe, when there's no
 activity,
 people gripe.
When folks want to start a different reflector for a special topic, people
 gripe

How about we all just talk and STOP griping!!! Sheesh!! If you don't like
 mail, don't subscribe!

I'm getting sick and tired of all the Amateur folks doing nothing but
 griping about EVERYTHING!

Maybe folks are correct and this is just a hobby full of old, inflexible,
 gripey, codgers!

 UGH!

Stop your griping ;-)

I point out the my old 51J4 sound pretty nice if

that filtering system is so rounded. The cutoff of
the audio frequencies is quite gentle. Not all

 pretty gentle.

Very true. My R390 sounds so much better that my R390A when receiving a
good-quality AM signal at any given position of the bandwidth switch
appropriate for AM reception, and I've always attributed it to this.

[AMRadio] Ham mods (was Re:SP600 Question)]

2009-09-15 Thread Larry Szendrei
Concerning the discussion of audio modifications to commercially designed
amateur AM transmitters:

A lot of these rigs from the 1950s (Viking I, Viking II, Valiant, DX-100)
did, in fact have pretty nasty audio in their stock state, and there are
good reasons to go in and engineer improvements in that department - and
there are many low-hanging fruit.

Granted, modifications made by hams will cover the spectrum from
worse-than-stock to an extreme make-over in the positive direction. So
will their physical implementation.

(From what I've heard and had experience with, the Collins 32V-* series,
and the Johnson Viking Ranger, are among the best-sounding in stock form
of this generation of gear.)

Myself, I don't like to sound raspy, distorted, or overly restricted, so
I've more-or less had my way with these rigs to varying degrees here at
ARS NE1S. Then again, I don't own any museum pieces, I got all of them for
nothing or close to it, and could give a rats behind about any resale
value. I do make sure any mods I do are neatly implemented and not ugly
hack jobs, simply because that's the way I like to do things. They are my
toys to enjoy, and enjoy them I do. There are two reasons I don't own any
super-clean gear of this type: (1) the pricetag, and (2) I'd be reluctant
to do what I consider necessary modifications to it. I'll agree with what
Jim W5JO said - this type of experimentation is ham radio at its best, and
I've learned a lot in the process.

Re: [AMRadio] AM Transmitter quality

2009-09-15 Thread Larry Szendrei
Joe wrote:

I really don't care whether people chose to modify their old AM
transmitters to improve sound quality, as they can do whatever they
want with their radio. What does bother me a little is when people use
words like nasty and awful to describe the audio quality of some
classic transmitters, as if thedesigners of the day were not smart
enough to design a decent transmitter.

Guilty; I used the word nasty. But in using this word I never meant to
imply the engineers involved in the design were less than competent - I
accept that this was the effect they were trying to achieve, perhaps in an
attempt to make AM competitive with SSB to cut through the mustard. I'll
still call a spade a spade though - some of them DO sound downright nasty
to my ears ;-)

At the time these transmitters were built, the goal of amateur pone
operation was effective radiotelephone service. Human speech falls into
the range between 300 and 3000 Hz. There are sounds outside this range,
but they do not contribute to intelligibility. So, in order to make the
best use of the power available, the bandwidth didn't need to be more
than 4Khz. The next logical step in the quest for efficient use of
available power was SSB, which has an equally nasty sound but does the
 intended job quite well.

A lot of the transmitters we're talking about not only have restricted
bandwidth, but are very distorted in their stock form as well, in part
because of the crude hard clipping methods used to improve talk power
(rather than a combination of fast AGC and hard diode clipping only on the
highest audio peaks, as is employed, for example, in the CBS Volumax 410).
Granted, they had a price target for the transmitter they were trying to
meet, so they made the compromises they felt were necessary. I've heard it
proposed that part of this may have been a marketing ploy to help the AM
rigs compete in the marketplace with SSB.

By modifying a transmitter to increase the audio bandwidth, all that is
being done is to get it closer to the commercial broadcast transmitters
of the day, which needed much greater bandwidth to handle music.

Sure, but there is more to audio mods than just opening up the bandpass.
There's plenty of improvements that can be made to reduce the distortion
in the audio chain of the old rigs, for example, adding inverse feedback.
The fact that the stock Ranger has an inverse feedback loop no doubt
contributes to why it is one of the better-sounding rigs of the day.

I've added more photos to the album VE3GZB. I'm not hooked up to the

My modulator isn't quite done yet either. This is just the power supply
(-500, +350, +500, +1400) and the RF deck running tuned into a parallel
pair of 100W lamps.

 Hi Jim Tonne and gang,

I used Smart FTP for years and when I bought a new computer
recently, I noticed that they wanted to charge for the program. I
can't afford on my budget to pay for a program that I will not use
much and I don't maintain a web page so there is no need to
purchase one for my limited purposes.

So I downloaded FileZilla which I found to be easy to use and quite
a nice program. I tried to upload the manual to BAMA but could
never connect to the upload folder. Ken explained the FileZilla
along with several other FTP programs have a tendency to worm around
in an FTP server by establishing two connections and because many
people try to download the entire BAMA site, SBC has prohibited it
along with several other FTP programs.

Clay mentioned the resident FTP part of DOS and I must confess there
are so many commands in DOS that I have forgotten that I probably
would die before relearning how to use it. So now I have confessed.
As for Netscape-Firefox and other browsers, I have used them before
but never have liked them The last time I used Firefox it locked my
computer and it took a while to get it going again. So I am stuck
with IE which I do fine using, and, thankfully, there are people
like Jim//WB2FCN who will help a poor boy.

So if you guys want to upload or download using the SBC site, be
sure to read the directions. Ken mentions several things about FTP
programs and the use of Windows Explorer that you should know. Ken
and the host (SBC) is very kind to provide this service to us and I
want to publically thank him and them. Believe me having a public
and popular site like BAMA is a headache for which, they aren't
paid. I scanned and sent my manual because some guys said the
quality of the current one wasn't good. So if you have manuals that
fit Ken's requirements, his is most accommodating and great to work
with on this project. He is also a great AM person too.

Thanks to all for their suggestions and help.

I agree that getting all the Is dotted and the Ts crossed in

the Collins KWT-6 (AN/URC-32) transmitter, either the entire manual
or just the section that covers the linear amplifier unit
(AM-2061/URT) and the section that covers the antenna
coupler/wattmeter unit (180U-2), their schematics, how the PA cooling
is adjusted, and how they are connected. I am interested in either
the original or photocopies of the above sections. Will buy or rent
to do my own photocopying of relevant pages and then return the
original!! The entire manual probably has too many pages to copy.

2009-05-31 Thread Larry WA9VRH
FIRST WEDNESDAY AM NIGHT!!! Sponsored by the Collins Collectors Association.

Wednesday June 3rd, 2009 on 3880 kcs at 7:00 PM local East Coast time marks
the start of the latest
chapter of First Wednesday AM Night, drawing hundreds of vintage stations
from across the country.

Please Note: Roger K5VRX will be filling in for Bob W0YVA this month Anyone
care to help Roger please let me know.
TNX. Larry WA9VRH

7:00 PM-8:30 PM Local East Coast Time Anchor: Bob W0YVA filling in for Bob
Roger K5VRX

Hi Dave,

Last week you posted a message looking for Broadcast Transmitter websites. I
sent you a reply but later found my computers clock was set way off.

Anyway here is what I sent.

First suggestion is www.radio-guide.com

Also a basic Google search on 20V-3 provided a wealth of places to look.

Re: [AMRadio] Filament choke

2009-04-29 Thread Larry Szendrei
One way to make an under-sized filament choke (from an inductance
point-of-view) work is to parallel-resonate it at the desired frequency of
operation with a capacitor. Practically, you can do this by adding the
required capacitance to the input tuned circuit. On the two GG amps I
built I use switched low-Q pi-nets on the input, so that meant for 160M
the capacitor on the filament side of the pi-net grew in value, over
what it would have otherwise been. Also works for parallel-resonant input
nets, of course.

I got the idea from Rich Measure's web pages; he explains it in detail there.

2009-04-19 Thread Larry WA9VRH
HI Guys,

You know what??

Here is a person asking an honest question (and I may be wrong)

But all you give him back is bullshit! What the hell are you thinking??

Dayton will probably be down a lot this year. Me no I will not be there as
I just went back to work after a 3 month lay off.

Why are you trying to discourage someone from going?? Do you want it to
fail for GOOD

Well if so go to H... I want to be back there next year! NO I don't go
to make a fourtune I go to see friends. Probably something you narrow
minded people do not understand.

If you don't like Dayton STAY HOME! We who enjoy it will NOT care!

I would give my left NUT to be there to see all the friends that I will not
be able to see this year... I wonder how many will not be there next year
for me to see.Any of you jerks ever thought of that???

Bill N4BKT I am sorry for our fellow hams that are a sorry sort. Please
wait for the reply from that Hamvention as I believe they will give you a
negative answer. But at least it won't be full of answers comming out of
assholes instead of brains.

73 Larry WA9VRH

Sorry but I have to post this to other list to keep ths crap in line. We
don't need to trash Dayton we need to help keep it going because it probably
will never be able to be replaced!

As decided by WRC-03, we get the upper part of 40 meters back this
month, world-wide!

It almost seems like very few want this information disseminated, I
almost fell out of my chair after bringing in the latest issue of ER
in from the mailbox. I thought it was NEXT year.

Nothing to be found on the ARRL site, except an editorial back in 2000
proposing the return of the upper part of the band. For every two
things they do right, it always seems they develop a bad case of
cephalo-posterioritis on something else, and a lot of the reporting is
a day late and a dollar short.

I then spent some time looking through AMfone.net, but they don't seem
to be discussing it either. Makes me wonder if the saying about
fone-only operators might be at least partially true: Without CW, its
just CB. ;) And maybe they're just fine sitting on one frequency on
a band that usually goes flat by 10pm.

The only place I found on the net that has it straight and out in the
open is Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40_meters

I don't get it... Unless the word gets out, there'll be no one ON the
upper part of 40m when it opens up! C'mon, this is a BIG deal!

I'm betting this news is a big surprise to many here, please respond
to the thread if that is correct.

Regardless, three Sunday nights from now I'm going to have the DX-100
fired up on 7290!

Re: [AMRadio] Ultrasonic feedback

2009-02-03 Thread Larry Szendrei
My Apache modulator squeals when the microphone gain is raised
and the modulator tubes draw a lot of current. As long as the
microphone gain is kept very LOW the current does not take off
and there is no squeal coming from the modulator section. I am
going to go through the section with a screwdriver and a
nut driver to tighten up the grounds to the chassis and tube
 socket.

In my experience the most common cause of these symptoms isn't feedback
within the modulator itself, but RF rectification somewhere in the audio
chain prior to the gain pot. Generally this is an indication of too much
RF in the shack. I had this problem when I was using balanced line and a
non-optimal tuner for this situation, creating imbalance in the system and
subsequent radiation from the feedline. I have since built myself a proper
balanced tuner at that operating position which has eliminated the
problem.

You can try wrapping the microphone cable around a ferrite or powdered
iron core of the type used for RF filtering. Usually 3-4 turns will take
care of it if it's going to at all. Put the core as close to the mike jack
at the transmitter as you can. Trying a different style of microphone can
also help. If you are running an EQ and/or processing ahead of the
microphone input these devices can also be susceptible to RF
rectification.

chain prior to the gain pot.

I also wanted to add: you can determine if this is the problem by testing
the transmitter into a proper dummy load (i.e., not a light bulb, which
will radiate to some degree). If the squeal goes away, or if you need to
advance the audio gain considerably further for it to appear, it's
probably RF rectification that's your problem.

Re: [AMRadio] The Great Rochester Hamfest

2009-01-24 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi All,

Well you better kiss and make up or the Great Rochester Hamfest will
probably be gone in a couple of years. Before you shoot me let me explain.
For more years than I will put in print (in case my wife sees this) I was
the chairman for the Peoria Il Superfest. For years we were on our own date.

Then something happened and Radio Expo in Chicago ended up on the same
weekend. We were locked into our weekend as a few years eariler the
fairgrounds moved us without telling us. Well we threw a fit and they agreed
NEVER to change our date again. (which they have lived up to)

So for a number of years we butted heads with R.E. However even though
Peoria is much smaller in population we still maintained most of our
attendance. R.E. did ok also but we both had issues with dealers that wanted
to be at both but did not have enough staff to do both.

Well finally last year or the year before R.E. changed facilities and we are
on different dates. We in Peoria have seen a growth in attendance even
though hamfests in general are shrinking.

We believe that both RE and Peoria will continue to prosper without the
conflict of the same dates.

So GUYS and GALS knock off the BS and kiss and make up before the Great
Rochester hamfest becomes nothing more than memories!

Neither of you will win in this pissing contest (technical term) You will
tear friendships apart, you will make dealers make choices that they don't
want to make (and they may not show up at either show) NO one is going to
win. ESPECIALLY when you are in the same town!

I hope for ALL you can straighten this out as we do not need another hamfest
to go SK!

 Hello,

I looked at both sites, and here is what I noticed:

The New Rochester Hamfest is being put on by the Rochester Amateur
 Radio Association.

The New Rochester Hamfest is recognized by the ARRL, listed by the
ARRL as the only Rochester Hamfest on that date, and is the site of
 the ARRL Atlantic Division Convention.

The Original Rochester Hamfest site is displaying 2008 information,
with the notation that 2009 information will be given when it is
 Available.

The Original Hamfest is on Friday and Saturday.
The New Hamfest is on Saturday only.
So, you could go to the Original Hamfest on Friday,
and the New Hamfest on Saturday.

A little history: The Rochester Hamfest was the largest hamfest in
the eastern US. Before last year's Hamfest, a large part of the
original fairground location was sold, and the formerly giant flea
market was relocated into a much smaller space. Attendance was poor,
and many hams thought that the Rochester Hamfest was finished.

The move to a new location with space for a another giant flea market
is a wonderful thing. Now we can once again look forward to more
 great Rochester Hamfests.

Lee - you seem to be describing a different Eagle. The original post
(which John was replying to, and included in his reply) describes the
Gross Eagle as a 1933 regenerative receiver:

A 1933 Gross Radio Company Eagle regen RX, complete with all four
coils and documentation.
Think of a National SW-3, with a single coil rather the SW-3's two.
Band coverage is 200 meters down to 15 meters.
A pair of type 32 tubes, and a single 33 in the AF output.

I have seen and operated that receiver, as the person who had originally
made that post on the AWA reflector (Bruce, W1UJR) is a good friend of
mine and lives nearby.

As I recall the Eagle was available from Gross in the late
40s. I think maybe the Philmore NT-200 was a mass marketing knock-off of
the Gross Eagle. They put everything in a fresh new box using fresh new
parts, not surplus, including tubes and two coil forms for two bands.
Philmore then advertised their kit to the Novice crowd and Gross probably
said we want out and sold their remaing kits to BA. Both transmitters used
a U shaped piece of aluminum for their chassis. The Power supplies were on
another U shaped piece of aluminum. Both transmitters had their tuning caps
and tuning lamps in the same place on the front of the U shaped chassis.
The initual Novice bands were 80 and 11 meters. The first Philmore

If the tuner is a band-pass filter - an example would be the link-coupled

Conditions on 160M last might were extremely poor for close-in stations. I
was on for the Gray Hair Net on 1945 at 8:00PM EST. I could barely hear
most stations within a 150 mile radius. Stations from 150 miles to 250
miles or so were readable but below normal strength. Stations at 400 miles
or so and beyond were of normal strength, or possibly a bit stronger than
normal.

Very atypical!

[AMRadio] RE: 160m AA5 receiver to AM Xmtr project

2008-10-30 Thread Larry Szendrei
Assuming the AA5 converted to the HF receiver still uses a 455 KHz IF,
you'll be mixing the RX VFO with 455KHz to generate the TX frequency.
You'll have to be careful of 455KHz harmonics (the 4th is at 1820 KHz) and
other mixing products that could fall inside the band, or close enough to
it so that they are not attenuated sufficiently prior to being
transmitted.

Mixing the TX VFO (on the TX frequency or a sub-harmonic thereof) 455KHz
higher for injection at the RX doesn't work because the TX VFO is right on
the RX frequency, and that will be all you'll hear!

From: Theosleaper [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I like this idea. Pondered about taking two AA5 receivers (both the
samemodel for a physical match) modified for 160 and or 80 with the
local osc of one of them feeding the second one. Then the second one
has its guts changed to an Xmtr with a converter that uses the local
osc of the first one as a vfo. What do you think?

Cool! You could even arrange a mechanical bandswitch to yank out the slug
or jam it back in ;-)

On 75M it was probably mixing with a harmonic of the local oscillator, as
the image of the broadcast band would be from 1450 KHZ - 2510 KHz
(assuming the radio was designed to cover 540 - 1600 KHz and the IF is 455
KHz).

The AA5 I'm planning to convert used octals too, which is why I suggested
the (octal) tube lineup I did for it's next incarnation.

When I was in the 6th grade, I used to take my mother's AA5 radio part
constantly and then put it together again. (It used octal tubes). I read
in an article about a new ferrite magnetic antenna. I ordered one from
Burstein-Applebee in Kansas City. It was a small coil with an adjustable
slug for resonance. I hooked it up to my AA5 radio and it worked great.
better then the loop on the broadcast band. Then I discovered if I pulled
the slug out of the coil, the coil was now tuned to the 75 meter ham band.
Apparently the second harmonic of the AA5 oscillator was now mixing with the
75 meter phone signals and producing a 455 khz signal. It worked great! 75
meter AM stations came in loud and clear. When I wanted to give the radio
back to my mother, I simply peaked the antenna loopstick antenna back on
the broadcast band.

Re: [AMRadio] Re: GBgt; 160m AM receiver project

2008-10-28 Thread Larry Szendrei
One project on my round-tuit list is to take an old AA5 junker, from which
I robbed the IF transformers long ago, into a QRP 160M AM MOPA
transmitter. I would use the local oscillator as the VFO, driving a pair
of 25L6s in parallel or push-pull, with another pair of 25L6s as plate
modulators. Then choose the VFO tube and low-level audio tubes such that
the series combination of those heaters is in the 18 - 24V range, which,
in series with the 4- 25L6s, adds up to 118 - 124V for operation directly
off the line. A solid-state rectifier would be used.

Heck, might even be able to double in the final for 2-band operation.

This would be a nice power level for running barefoot when conditions
allow, or feeding a linear amplifier for more oomph, and be a bit of a
novelty rig. I would use the original AA5 chassis and cabinet.

Hi all,

FIRST WEDNESDAY AM NIGHT!!! Sponsored by the Collins Collectors Association.

Wednesday October 1ST, 2008 on 3880 kcs at 7:00 PM local East Coast time
marks the start of the latest
chapter of First Wednesday AM Night, drawing hundreds of vintage stations
from across the country.

The event is anchored by a tall ship AM station in each time zone. The
East Coast and Central sections run
for 90 minutes in response to the tremendous participation in those time
zones. The remaining time zones
will be an hour. We encourage stations to check-in on AM using Collins and
other AM transmitters, new and
old. It's an opportunity to revel in this nostalgic mode, enjoy giving
vintage equipment a run, and sharing
some storytelling about classic vacuum tube homebrew and commercial designs.
Typically more than a
hundred stations take part in the evening's coast-to-coast AM event; by the
time it concludes at 10:00 PM

Local PST.

LISTEN for the following anchors and stop by to say hello, won't you? You
don't have to be running Collins

or vintage gear to be welcomed into the group.

Re: [AMRadio] infinite impedance detector vs diode

2008-09-04 Thread Larry Szendrei
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 The way I understand it,

The infinite impedance detector is a device such as a tube or FET that
normally draws output current unless reversed biased. The device is
reversed biased to cutoff and then input signal turns it on like class B
service but the input does not draw current. The output is taken from the
cathode, or source in the case of a FET, in follower fashion.

I am not sure how this is going to correct the slew distortion that is
caused by the RF filtering and discharge rate of the output. Perhaps it is
because of the follower effect of having a low Z output with no diode at
the
output. This may mean that the discharge is at the same rate as the
charge?

I've recently been working on a quasi-restoration of a National NC-156
(like the NC100XA with a 1500Kc IF and a few other differences). This
particular one uses one half of a 6C8 dual triode as an infinite impedance
AM detector. I don't know why they did this, as it is immediately followed
with a series-diode noise limiter which I would think would introduce more
distortion than a simple diode envelope detector, even when disabled
(diode biased fully on). The cathode-grid terminals of the other 1/2 of
the 6C8 is used for this diode. This is the 1st BA receiver crossing my
bench employing an infinite impedance detector, and only some of the
NC-100 variants used this circuit. Other versions used the common plate
detector (triode or sharp-cutoff pentode cathode-biased to near cutoff,
with the IF ripple filtered in the plate circuit and audio taken from the
far-side of the filter).

[AMRadio] New England ARRL Convention in Boxboro, MA, and the ROWH

2008-08-24 Thread Larry Szendrei
I just got home from The ARRL New England convention in Boxboro, MA,
after riding down and back with my friend Steve, KS1F (formerly K1MV).

The flea market was small compared to what I remember, especially
considering the perfect weather both days - not many sellers, and it
didn't seem very much trading was taking place. I was able to find a 175
KHz IF transformer (I've been looking for some for years), as well as
several 262 KHz IF transformers, all NIB/NOS, and an xtal in a nice
round ceramic holder for 3945, which is the frequency for the Old
Buzzard's Net - a daily AM net here in the Northeast. Also picked up a
few assorted other parts, nothing nearly as exciting as the former and
not worth listing here, but stuff that I will definitely use at some point.

I also enjoyed looking at the vendor's display of the latest and
greatest contemporary radio toys, but don't have the spare cash right
now to indulge in any of that!

I enjoyed seeing many of my friends, dinner with KS1F, WA1QIX, KA2QFX,
W1IF, WA1SSJ, and a beer and an eyeball QSO with Pete, WA2CWA. This is
my #1 reason for attending these things any more.

A highpoint was the midnight Royal Order of the Wouff Hong (ROWH)
ceremony. If you ever get a chance to attend one of these, it's not to
be missed. A very well-known and active AMer from the state of Maine had
a prominent role in the sacred proceedings, but I can tell you no more
as I am sworn to secrecy -I may even be in mortal danger by revealing
this much!.

We had hoped to meet up with Bruce, W1UJR, for the ROWH ceremony - he
was passing through Boxboro on his way home from the AWA conference in
Rochester. But he was running late, and only arrived after the ceremony
was underway, so he resumed the long drive back to Woolich, ME. I found
a message from him when we got back to the room shortly after 0100, so I
called him then only to find he had come, and gone.

[AMRadio] 1500 KHz trap for NC-156, one more time...

2008-08-13 Thread Larry Szendrei
Last night I used the NC-156 receiver, with its 1500 KHz IF, on the Gray
Hair Net on 1945 KHz. With the 1500 KHz filter (parallel-resonant 1000pF
and 11.25µH) in series with the antenna lead, the 1945 KHz AM signals
were strapping with only a very faint beat note which varied in pitch as I
tuned through them with the AM detector. With the filter shorted out, all
I heard was a cacophony of broadcast signals - I could no longer hear the
net!

I am happy...

[AMRadio] W8VYZ back?

2008-08-12 Thread Larry Szendrei
Last Tuesday on the Gray Hair Net my neighbor Jon, N1MMD, reported that he
had heard W8VYZ back on the air. Good news; he had been in the hospital
for an anuerism as had been reported on this list. Has anyone else heard
him on, and if so, how's he doing?

Re: [AMRadio] 1500 KHz trap for NC-156

2008-08-11 Thread Larry Szendrei
Last night I had a chance to play some more with this.

Perusing the junquebox yielded a 3-section, 400pF/section broadcast band
air variable and a piece of air-wound coil stock about 2 diameter and
about 2.5 long, #16 tinned wire, with spacing between turns about equal
to the wire diameter. The coil looked about right for an 80M tank coil for
a single 807 or 6146, etc.

I wired them in parallel and put the parallel combination is series with
the antenna lead. MUCH better - I could still null out the 1500Kc
interference, but signals a few 100KHz from 1500Kc were much stronger
compare with the earlier network of 200µH in parallel with 56pF. The new
component values are 1000pF (measured) and 11.26µH (calculated), which
approximates a series reactance of 92 ohms inductive (ignoring the
capacitor's presence) at 1.2MHz and 88 ohms capacitive at 1.8 MHz
(ignoring the inductor's contribution). WBZ at 1.13MHz was, within my
ability to read the S-meter of questionable calibration and with QSB, 2
S-units down with the filter in, compared to what it is with the filter
shorted out. On the 80M band there is no noticeable attenuation from the
filter.

I can live with this; I'm calling it good and moving on.

Thanks to all the helpful suggestions and comments.

Re: [AMRadio] 1500 KHz trap for NC-156

2008-08-11 Thread Larry Szendrei
Hi Jim,

Apologies if my post was confusing.

Yes, I'm attempting to reject 1500 KHz, which is the IF frequency.

The receiver covers 0.3 - 1.2 MHz, and 1.7 - 17 MHz, skipping a band
approximately centered about the IF frequency. Therefore, the ideal (and
impossible) filter would be a brick wall stopband from 1.2 - 1.7 MHz, with
zero attenuation outside of that range.

I mentioned 80M only to comment that I noticed no attenuation that far
removed from the filter center frequency.

Yes, I wanted minimal attenuation at 160M as well. There were no signals
on that band when I was playing with this last night around 7PM local time
to use for reference, which is why I didn't quote attenuation for 160M.
However I was hearing plenty of static crashes on 160M with and without
the filter. I imagine the attenuation on 160M will be somewhat similar to
what I saw at 1.13 MHZ, roughly 12 dB - nothing to write home about, and
hardly optimized, but good enough considering the time and effort I care
to invest in this particular project.

Let me jump in on that trap thing for just a
moment.

You are trying to reject what frequency / frequencies?

And you want to pass what frequency / frequencies?

Reading your last mail here leaves me confused as to
what you wanted to do. I thought you wanted to
reject 1500 or so and still pass 160 meter band but
you just now mentioned 1100 and the 80 meter band.

[AMRadio] 1500 KHz trap for NC-156

2008-08-08 Thread Larry Szendrei

Hello all,

I'm working on putting an AM station together for a friend, consisting
of a Viking II and NC-156, both quite cosmetically-challenged, but
complete.

I did a bunch of work to bring them back to operation, including
significant audio improvements in the Viking.

However, the IF in the NC-156 is 1500 KHz, and as you might expect there
is bleed-through of broadcast stations on or near that frequency,
especially on the 160M band, and especially at night, when there is
sky-wave propagation there. The undesired signals are so strong that it
makes operation on 160M totally impossible.

I first tried a series-resonant circuit from ANT to GND, and it was
totally ineffective, probably because the source impedance of the
antenna is low. Then I reconfigured my L and C as a parallel resonant
circuit in series with the ANT at the receiver, and I was able to
totally eliminate the 1500 KHz +/- interference. But, 160M signals are
highly attenuated also (although S/N, if you will, where N is the the
1500 KHz interference, is much better). Also WBZ on 1.3 MHz is very
noticibly attenuated.

My trap consists of a 140pf air trimmer at ~40% mesh (= ~56 pF) in
parallel with 200µH. I'm thinking a higher Q circuit (more C and less L)
will sharpen the peak and I'll have less attenuation 300 KHz away from
the resonant frequency of the trap.

Or is there a better way to eliminate the 1500 KHz QRM?

73 es Tnx,

Agreed on all, Bruce. My comments were only addressing the situation of
restrictions in developments of houses or buildings on land with private
ownership of each.

Speaking of antennas, after last winter half of my 160M dipole is a lot
closer to the ground than it used to be. Thankfully it still loads up with
a reasonable SWR and gets out to most of the places I regularly talk to.
Gonna have to deal with that this fall before the snow flies. The leg of
the antenna that needs work is on my neighbor's property (with his kind
permission, of course).

Re: [AMRadio] ARRL initiative

My buddy Todd wrote:
I have to agree with Walter in that many folks move to such places

'unsightly' antennae or whatever else, they want their neighborhood

rules when they sign the contract.

This is true, but there is a deeper issue, as well, and that is the
concept of property rights. If you own the property, darn it, you should
be free to do anything you want to it up to the point where your actions
cross over the boundary onto your neighbor's property (for example,
dumping hazardous waste). It is not, IMHO, one's responsibility to
preserve one's neighbor's pretty view. That said, I would never consider
buying a piece of property where the contract so restricted my rights.

Different story if they change the rules once you already live
somewhere. History dictates that your previously-lawful use should be
grandfathered. If not, then you have a gripe.

Yep, that's even worse.

Trying to impose one's views on another by force is no different if
the HOA / zoning board does it or the ARRL.

Right on, 'bro.

 And you always have the
freedom (and responsibility, IMO) not to go there if you think it's
going to be a problem for you.

How about just on principle?

No different than moving into a
residentially-zoned area and trying to set up an industrial site. You
can hope for a variance, but to expect it would be foolish. They're
even good enough to let you know that in advance.

Zoning laws violate property rights too, IMHO.

Larry,

You've got them. Please add $5 for shipping and send a check made out to ORUUC for $25. I will get the chokes boxed and ready
to go.
