Re: [AMRadio] Small(est) rigs with 6146 final
another rig, the GLOBE HG-303, that uses a single 6146. It's a compact CW rig and well built. The matching VFO is the GLOBE V-10. Cabinets Anyone see/have one? And have you tried Plate modulation scheme with it? This is a neat rig. I've had one for years along with the VFO, and it's the second pair I've had...I too gave the first away and regretted it and wound up with this pair, in far poorer condition. Never put 'em on AM though although probably I would have if they covered 160. But they work extremely well. What I like about the rig, more than the VFO, is that it's an original design, it's not electrically or mechanically like any other rig. The cabinets and hardware were shared with Globe's CB line. The VFO is basically the standard WRL Globe VFO repackaged with a nice slide rul dial and colored lights. The transmitter has all components on several bulkhead type vertical chassis with the tubes horizontal. And there's a separate transformer for high and low B+. The transmitter is grid block keyed and puts about 140 volts on the key at low current, and there's no clamp tube to guard against lack of excitation. Since it's only a two tube rf stage and the VFO outputs at 160 for 80 meter operation (going from memory here) I recall a substantial amount of 160 meters to the antenna when operating on 80. Note I didn't say it was a perfect design, just an original one that works as intended, I suppose. Never have found out who was behind it or if there was a story there. Anywone have the history of the Rockford built GC-Globes? The company's successor is still in town, I plan to swing by and see if it's in the same location next time I'm out that way. When I got my Novice in 1965 I was all set to get one of these new but the store, Gem Electronics, had just sold its last one, for $49.95 I think, and I wound up with a DX-60, a far better rig but at almost twice the price. -Pete WB2QLL Somers, WI __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
Re: [AMRadio] Globe Champion 350 HQ-170A
Kim et al: First I've heard of AX9909's being fragile but for me the issue is moot as they were just way too expensive. I don't know why Leo used it but he was always interested in a good deal on surplus. When I got my 350A ten years ago I happened to ask a PA land ham about it and he sent me a copy of the Philips data sheet, and the tubes, if they met specs and worked as indicated, would indeed be appropriate tubes. He said they were used in a very few industrial applications but not available there either. Studying everything at the time led to a couple conclusions. I wasn't able to get a reasonable deal on a 5894 or even 829B's, and everyone who had one said someone had given it to them. One of the finals in the rig was cracked when I got it, it was one of those rigs that had been sitting in a barn for years. More importantly, none of the tubes were spec'd for the kind of service used in the 350A although clearly they did work for others. Just about only common tube I found that had published specifications for AM operation at 1000 volts on the anode was the 4CX250B, which I had a few of. The interelectrode capacitance and so on are also extremely close. So that's what I did and it's worked ever since, even after I dropped the rig on a dirt floor in a friend's barn when the steps I was carrying it up disintegrated under me :( It's a simple mod on the A, harder on the others. The fan is removed and the tube socket sits in a tuna can mounted vertically over the fan hole with the flat squirrel fan mounted atop one of the transformers feeding a plastic tube plenum. Electrically the filament has to be dropped by .3 volts and the drive increased since it's a tetrode, but as I recall that's all that's needed. A no-holes mod. I should write this up but it's been a tough ten years... 73, -Pete WB2QLL Somers, WI __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
Re: [AMRadio] Aluminum guards for Switchcraft pushbuttons?
Anyone know where to get these aluminum guards for Switchcraft 903 and 913 switches?? Dunno but I've used bottlecaps for this purpose on numerous ocsasions with great success, they even looked decent in a pro studio. -Pete WB2QLL Somers, WI __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
RE: [AMRadio] Free For Postage
Hi Don: Judging by the guys who've responded via the mailing list, you're probably deluged by now. This is a neat offer...wouldn't it be nice if we'd all list our manuals someplace and offer to make copies for cost of that and postage Anyway, what appeals to me is: 3 Rider Chanalyst man copy 1 Opto 8000 Frequency Counter Man Copy 1 MFJ CWF-2 CW Filter diagram If others before have claimed and if you feel like having them photocopied I would be happy to pay the copying cost, obviously you have not represented you would do this and I'm expecting you don't want to, and it's no big deal. I've lived without these this long...incidentally the counter I must have had for 15 years now and came out of a surplus gear sale of the private junk of Wayne Greene of 73, Byte, etc. The MFJ I just hooked up Sunday and has a weird distortion so a look at the print would help. Chanalyst has been waiting for years for a manual I can afford. Thanks and 73, -Pete, WB2QLL Pete Ferrand 1506 NH Route 4A Enfield, NH 03748-3912 (603)632-5707
