the Thai Embassy is in Washington, DC. They have Consulate offices in Los

I, too, am curious as to why they want a Viking 1. I have one, on the

Re: [AMRadio] Seeking advice on wires in trees

2009-04-28 Thread Radio Station KW1I
When you put the pulley up at the top of pine tree make sure it is a good
quality one and test the uphaul line on it to make sure that everything is
sized right and the line under load can't jam between the pulley sheave and
the pulley housing.

I've found that the antenna system if tethered high enough in the pine does
not need springs or weights on the end of uphauls. The springiness in the
top of the pine will take up the peak forces.

I am going to need to have some tree work done before long.? At the present
time, my antennas are held up in lower limbs by cords I have gotten over
limbs by various methods.? I keep looking up higher at the tall pines and
wondering if I could employ a tree climber to mount some kind of
permanent support such as a pulley near the top.

Would like to receive suggestions from folks that have done this and
achieved relative permanence for antenna supports.? Thanks for your

On March 29, in addition to many AM stations having regular QSOs, I would
like to see a frequency in the General section (7.175 - 7.200 kHz) and one
in the Advanced/Extra (7.125 - 7.175 kHz) that had continuous QSO activity
on it analogous to the what happens on the monthly directed net First
Wednesday CCA AM Nights on 75 meters where more than a hundred stations may
take part across the country as net control stations hand off to each other
as propagation changes.

Not to be preaching to the choir, and not that I'm disagreeing, but this is
a very very fine line to tread in that it borders on broadcasting. During
the Riley Hollingsworth days there were FCC actions against hams who were
hogging THEIR (in their opinion) frequency by doing the same thing. I'm sure
you all know the person or persons at fault. They were being curmudgeonly
just to be a-holes.

I'm just saying, if we have some guys who are good at filibustering and can
take turns on freq. vs. broadcasting even ham related info, we'd be better
off than opening the AM crowd to FCC actions that the SSB crowd can use
against us. I'm OK with the SSBS'ers throwing 5.56 at us, but if we give
them 7.62 or 50cal. to use on us because we handed them the ammo can we've
got no one to blame but ourselves.

Charlie W4MEC that's an interesting thought, but we will probably run up
against the amount of time available to get on and try to keep up a wall of
carriers.

Sure, my converted broadcast transmitter will run 24/7 on whatever 40m
frequency you want, but I may have to resort to recorded programming, like
the Best of 75m AM alternating with the Best of 10m AM another time.

I just found a 90 minute tape full of the propagation benefits of Solar
Cycle 23, with VK2BA and myself in one outstanding QSO, with a sprinkling of
others. Wow.

Anyway, I'm game, say where.

Re: [AMRadio] Fw: GB 40m SWBC QRM to end 3/29/09... why isnt thisbeing hyped?

2009-03-10 Thread Radio Station KW1I
Minor correction on the attached: The SW broadcasters are due to vacate
7100-7200 kHz by Mar 29, 2009.

Hopefully many amateur AM stations will fire up on this band segment on Mar
29 to celebrate. Generals can use 7175 kHz and up, Advanced and Extra 7125
kHz and up.

This is the first time in 70 years this frequency segment will be
exclusively amateur radio 24 hours a day! DX stations who formerly had to
work western hemisphere stations split from 7000-7100 kHz, if not already
under temporary authorization, will soon be authorized to operate on
7100-7200 kHz as well.

Here's hoping all the broadcasters comply.

As decided by WRC-03, we get the upper part of 40 meters back this
 month, world-wide!

It almost seems like very few want this information disseminated, I
almost fell out of my chair after bringing in the latest issue of ER
in from the mailbox. I thought it was NEXT year.

Nothing to be found on the ARRL site, except an editorial back in 2000
proposing the return of the upper part of the band. For every two
things they do right, it always seems they develop a bad case of
cephalo-posterioritis on something else, and a lot of the reporting is
a day late and a dollar short.

I then spent some time looking through AMfone.net, but they don't seem
to be discussing it either. Makes me wonder if the saying about
fone-only operators might be at least partially true: Without CW, its
just CB. ;) And maybe they're just fine sitting on one frequency on
a band that usually goes flat by 10pm.

The only place I found on the net that has it straight and out in the
 open is Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40_meters

I don't get it... Unless the word gets out, there'll be no one ON the
upper part of 40m when it opens up! C'mon, this is a BIG deal!

I'm betting this news is a big surprise to many here, please respond
to the thread if that is correct.

Regardless, three Sunday nights from now I'm going to have the DX-100
 fired up on 7290!

I need a pair of large round main tuning knobs for a
Hammarlund HQ 140XA or HQ 150 receiver. They are the
large knobs with shallow flutes on them. They are
similar to the SP 600 main tuning knobs except without
the skirts. They came in the colors black and brown.

My HQ 160 had the same knobs as does my HQ 150 and HQ
140XA.

They are entirely different from the HQ 170, HQ 180,
HQ 100 and HQ 110 receiver knobs.

Please check your junk boxes!!

Your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Just name
your price. 73, John, K5PGW

Years back turntables had Neoprene rubber around the table with a Neoprene
capstan that drove the turntable. Someone manufactured a conditioner that
could be used to soak the capstan to return it to a pliable form and
smooth flat spots.

Does anyone know if the stuff is still around and where it might be

Re: [AMRadio] Re:SPAM

2007-02-15 Thread Radio Station KW1I

Good summary of SPAM / AMI history.

A couple of additional notes. The creation of AM International (with the
AMI name resurrected from an earlier defunct AM group) was entered into only
reluctantly. After SPAM went inactive, numerous attempts to offer support
and assistance to the last SPAM president were ignored. Don - K4KYV,
David - W6PSS, Barry - N6CSW (ER's founder), myself and others felt it was a
critical time to have a national AM organizational voice, and jointly agreed
on its form and mission.

One of the last official acts of SPAM before it went silent was to petition
the FCC to allow AM stations to double their historic power level,
equivalent to about 6000 watts PEP output at 100% modulation. This occurred
early in the 1990s when the 10 year AM input power measurement grandfather
period was ending. At that time all AM transmitters would have to stay
within the new 1500 watt PEP output provision. The SPAM petition was
considered along with one that I had submitted to change from the old one KW
input power measurement to the roughly equivalent output power measurement
of 3000 watt PEP at 100% modulation. The ARRL also submitted a petition
requesting continuation of the historic AM power level by continuing to
grandfather the old measurement technique. The fourth petition considered
at the same time was not in the form of a petition, but a half page letter
from an amateur requesting removal of the AM mode from amateur bands.
Happily, the latter request was not successful and the FCC made a fairly
strong statement about AM and its place in amateur radio. Unfortunately,
the FCC denied the continuation of AM historic power levels in several
petition and petition reconsideration actions. And, it always mentioned in
a snide way that the AM community was even asking to double their power
level, which was the position of the obscure SPAM petition.

I agree with Don that Internet based AM interest communities are now the
effective watchdog for AM. But, AMI is alive and has a roll, more in the
Hoisy and Floyd tradition, providing an organizational framework and
materials to support regional AM promotion and club activities.

When Floyd unexpectedly went SK, Hoisy W4CJL who was founder of SPAM
agreed to let a guy in California take over. It took a while to get all
the SPAM paperwork, and there may have been a bank account, from Floyd's
estate. I heard that Floyd's parents were not totally cooperative. But
eventually the guy in CA got everything and began running SPAM.

He hit the ground running and for a few months it looked like he was going
be even more actively involved than Floyd. But he turned out to be a real
flash in the pan. He abruptly dropped from sight. No-one was ever able
to contact him to learn what happened. Ads for SPAM membership continued
to run in CQ magazine for a couple of years. I don't think anyone ever
solved the mystery.

A few years later, Dale KW1I resurrected AMI (AM International) to take
its place. Occasionally we still hear from AMI, but I think the internet
has pretty much replaced SPAM/AMI as a watchdog for threats against AM.

Need to consult a Sunair ASB125/60 service manual. I believe this was a six
channel HF radio used in aviation applications in the 1970s. Apparently
most of this radio's circuits are the same as the Coast Guard PRC-108 HF
back pack made by Sunair. The PRC-108 was picked up at the Dayton
Hamvention and will be modified for a few ham frequencies. Unfortunately,
custom L and C components were installed for each channel depending on the
channel frequencies ordered with the unit. The manual apparently has the
tables of what components were used by frequency range. Any help will be

ever produced. They made a few items during WWII and this was made I
  believe in
   1944.

It sort of a squatty cube about 1 foot on side and about a foot and a
half
  in
height. It has a big fan in the top cover. There are two lamps, a
breaker
doubles as a power switch and there is also power connector the same
as
  that on
the transmitter.

I have never seen another one.

It was made just for the ART13. It contains the filament, LV HV
  supplies.

When I got it the filament supply was shorted and all the
electrolytics
  were
   bad.

I replaced the filament transformer with a 19 VAC and full waved the
  output
into a big cap ( 50K ufd or something.) I removed the 4 mercuty arc
tubes
  and
   replaced them with SS rectifiers.

Finally, the electrolytics were removed and replaced with a bunch of
430
  ufd @
250 shunted by 40K equalization resisitors.

Everything else is intact. You turn on the switch and the big green
light
lights up. Wait about 45 seconds and the relay used to delay the plate
for
  the
mercury tubes kicks in and the red lamp and HV supplies come up. The
   transmitter is ready for service.

Like I said, I have never seen another one of these power supplies. I
  don't
have the model number in hand as I am in Florida right now and the
supply
  is in
   Ohio.

My instincts told me that there had to be something available out

either Drake, Heath or some commerical piece.

I assume you are using the Drake PS for the TR series?

 Ron,

I have been using an ART13 with the Drake AC power supply for the

 purpose.

Give a shout here at 813-837-2324 or 440-570-1762.

Or a QSO on 20m SSB

Don,

Missed you at Dayton this year.

The AM Forum went well. We were in Meeting Rm #2. Not so cavernous as one
of the big rooms. We had 65 attendees. Happily the PC projector worked
well and Don, K1DC's presentation of his restoration of the Collins 30-FX
was a high point.

Friday looked threatening from time to time, but was a mild day and a good
one for the flea market. As previously noted Sunday was surprisingly busy
and very nice WX.

I was unable to make it this year, due to time factor. Wonder how the AM
forum went? I recall last year attendance was down. Was it even lower
this
 year?

It used to never get rained out, back when they held it the 3rd weekend
in
April. Then someone got the brilliant idea of moving it to the 4th
weekend
in April, and it rained practically every year. So they moved it to May
to
escape the rain and cold, and although there have been a couple of
rain-free events, weather still seems to be a problem.

Apparently, the 3rd weekend in April by some quirk of nature turns out to
usually be dry in that little corner of the world. After they moved it to
the 4th weekend, I used to ask locals what the weather was like the week
 before, and inevitabley they would respond that the weather was fine then;
that would have been a good weekend to have had the hamfest. Of course
that
third weekend would sometimes be cold, and I have seen snow, but the
fleamarket rarely shut down. I recall one year in their brochure they
mentioned that in 22 years the hamfest had been rained out only twice. I
suspect that rain-free weekend in April is one factor in Dayton becoming
such a ham radio mecca. Too bad someone had to mess with the date.

2002-08-16 Thread Radio Station KW1I
Tom,

After talking to Tom Frenaye, K1KI who made the motion which resulted in
Minute 64 at the ARRL BOD, I don't think there is anything sinister towards
AM. Tom has been friendly to AM over the years. The danger is in the course
of the petition process. Some eager beavers may want to solve more supposed
bandwidth problems than the those caused by new digital emissions. This
is why we must stay close to the petition development process. We also need
to let our ARRL Division Directors know that we as AM'ers are always
concerned when bandwidth subband regulation is the subject because of
previous attempts to disenfranchise AM operations under the guise of
improving spectrum efficiency.

Hello Dale,

Will I am not one to shy away from standing up for AM, but read the response
from our ARRL Pres. ;

Have they just not been specific enough on Minute 64 or is there something
afoot Watson ?

The ARRL is petitioning the FCC to regulate subbands by bandwidth.

1. First off, we do not have a petition.

2. You can't work phone in the subbands now.

3. What we are interested in is two new modes of digital. Clover 2000 and
Pactor 3.

4. Under the present rules, 300 baud RTTY is the signal width standard.
Clover 2000 and Pactor 3 are a bit wider. It is felt that by being able to
accommodate these two new technologies, amateur radio would be in compliance
with its charge under part 97 to promote and enhance the art

5. Presently our technical team is looking at what frame work is needed to
accomplish the new modes.

I hope this helps and if you would pass it on so as to quell the fears of
the AM'ers.
