The problem is that once the bandplan is adopted, essentially a treaty, the FCC
would eventually need to modify the rules to align with it.

I'm not sure if the League is so much on a quest to eliminate AM as continuing

Re: [AMRadio] QRM fron Neighbor's Security System

2010-01-22 Thread Robert A. Poff WB3AWJ

It can be quite interesting approaching someone who innocently is a source of
interference.

Years ago when I worked in two-way we had a problem with interference on the
input of a customers repeater.

A signal would come and go, sounded like TV raster. Was strong enough to take
out the lower power mobiles, which generally

were about 15 miles from the repeater.

We started hunting it from the repeater site. Ended up in a nearby town, then
into a neighborhood. By then it was so strong that we had trouble

isolating one house. Noticed a UHF dish on one tower. I said to my boss I bet
someone who's that interested has a preamp up there.

We were right. He pulled the power to the preamp, and the signal went away.

But we had to do come explaining how his TV was interfering with security guys
twenty five miles away.

Luckily we took a receiver into his house, could hear the interference, and
that it went away when he killed the preamp.

Even still, I'd rather approach the person than ever call the Commission.

After having my radio station inspected twice, I'd rather keep my distance.

And then there's the story of a guy I knew who complained to the Commission
about a competitor and ended up being given a LONG list of violations himself.

Re: [AMRadio] Hot Broadcast Towers

2009-01-13 Thread Robert A. Poff WB3AWJ

Even the induced RF can be very unconfortable.

When we rebuilt my former four tower array, I had a welder up one of the towers
(Tower 2,, Steve) welding one leg together.

That tower wasn't being fed, and was grounded.

But every now and then a carib eener the welder had on his harness was touching
the tower and his arm.

The induced RF was nailing him. When he came down his arm had little burn marks
all over it.

They waited until I got to the site that morning to ask if I could lower power
even more. Which I did.

Then I asked why they didn't call me earlier, he said I didn't want to be a
problem.
Geez.

Depending on the soil you may be surprised
at how well bare copper will hold up.

Last summer we rebuilt a 60 year old AM array. Along the way we dug up a bunch
of radials planted in 1947.

For the most part you couldn't tell by looking at them if they had been there
sixty years
or six.

Staying all copper is correct.
Keep away from disimilar metals.
And spend the money for silver solder!

Hi Robert,

Pre-WWII here in Great Britain we had the Artificial Aerial Licence which
allowed testing of transmitters but only into a dummy load! If you google
Artificial Aerial Licence (note British spelling) you'll find a specimen
licence. Callsigns were in the 2AAA-2ZZZ series but they never got beyond
about 2GAA before the War intervened. After WWII, the callsigns were
re-issued to surviving 2AAA, etc holders but with the G prefix added. The
callsign series G2AAA-G2ZZZ was never completed, for some reason, and after
WWII the G3AAA-G3ZZZ series was issued to new licensees, that sequence ran
until the early 70's. There were no legal UK amateur operations during WWII
apart from Plan Flypaper, see

spend much time on the exam prep. But, in the course of my visit, he
related to me that during WWII (for whatever reason, we was not in
the military during the war) he recalled that hams would do odd
things, such as send LF signals down railroad tracks and power lines,
essentially trying to make QSOs with other hams doing the same. He
seemed to indicate that it was mainly CW and if he went into details
about how it was done, I don't recall them.

Has anyone else ever heard similar stories?

[AMRadio] Anti-AM Opinionated Hams

2007-11-22 Thread Robert A. Poff
I think most of the anti-AM attitude is just the lowest common denominator
speaking.

To them Slop-bucket is the standard voice mode on HF.
So it follows that anything else is evil.

Some years ago I had a discussion with one of the locals who exhibits this
thinking.
His reasoning (like most of them) was that AM occupies too much bandwidth.
And of course we need to conserve spectrum.
So AM should be outlawed.

I countered by saying that on 2 meter CB there's not enough room for all the
FM repeaters.
Since ACSB occupies such little bandwidth you could put at least four
repeaters of that mode in
the same spectrum of one NBFM signal.
So they should out outlaw FM on 2 meters and everyone switch to ACSB.
(tongue firmly implanted in cheek)

His eloquent, well thought out response?
But EVERYONE uses FM!

[AMRadio] Fw: {Collins} Special event operation THIS WEEK from Rockwell Collins - AUGUST 29

2007-08-28 Thread Robert A. Poff
This from the Collins List:

- Original Message -
Sent: Monday, August 27, 2007 6:57 PM
Subject: {Collins} Special event operation THIS WEEK from Rockwell Collins -
AUGUST 29

 List members:

I, along with the other members of the Collins ARC here in Cedar Rapids,
just learned this afternoon that there will be a SPECIAL OPERATING EVENT
from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, this WEDNESDAY, August 29th. The event is as
 follows:

Many of you probably have heard in the news that the US Air Force is
shopping for new air refueling tankers to replace the aging KC-135
fleet. There are competing bids for this proposal from both Boeing and
EADS (Airbus). Rockwell Collins is part of the Boeing Team, and this
Wednesday, Boeing is bringing a special exhibit van to Rockwell Collins in
Cedar Rapids that will provide employees with a view of the proposed
aircraft. In conjunction with that exhibit, the Collins ARC has been
asked to set up the B-29 radio equipment to illustrate the fact that
Collins equipment has been on the Air Force Tanker from the very
beginning. The first tanker was adapted from the B-29 and called the
KB-29. It carried the same radio gear.

The Boeing van with displays of the new tanker, which is based on the
767, will be set up in front of one of the major buildings. Next to the
van will be a tent. CARC will be in the tent on a 6-foot table. I'm
having signs made, etc. The icing on the cake will be if we can get the
ART-13 and BC-348 operating and on the air. To this end, people are
rounding up the necessary items to put up a wire antenna to a nearby tree.
We are working on power sources.

Here are the frequencies proposed for use (these according to general band
 plan/agreements):

80m AM: 3885 kHz (and perhaps 3880, as well)
 80m CW: 3710 kHz

 40m AM: 7290 kHz
 40m CW: 7110 kHz

 20m AM: 14,286 kHz
 20m CW: 14,060 kHz

ESTIMATED OPERATING TIME: The latest information I received (just prior
to writing this message) is to expect on-air operations to START in the
vicinity of 10:30 to 11:00 AM, CDST, which is 1530 to 1600 UTC. It is
anticipated that the on-air opertations will continue for several hours.
Although this hasn't been stated as yet, I expect that the call used will
 be W0CXX, Art Collins' call.

There will be an attempt to coordinate information to the CCA Reflector as
events develop on Wednesday. Alas, we do have rain in Wednesday's
forecast, but it is not presently predicted to be an all-day situation.
Some of you may recall the first attempt to get the B-29 equipment up and
running. That was about two years ago, and the equipment was set up in
the Cedar Rapids History Center, located in downtown Cedar Rapids. The
main problem was that local electrical noise levels were so high that the
ops at the station could not copy stations that were 20 over 9. I was
operating from my home QTH that day, relaying information to the que of
folks waiting to make contacts with my mighty DX-40! Hopefully, this
time will be much more successful.

I, and perhaps other CARC members, plan to be on the CCA Tuesday night net
tomorrow night, 0100 UTC, at 3805. If there is additional information,
we'll pass it along at that time. So, gang, warm up the heavy iron and
prepare for some fun. Yes, we know this is short notice and we know this
is a weekday operation, but this is quite an opportunity to show the vast
time spread of Collins radio equipment contributions to the Air Force and
 related communications.

 73 to All,

 Dale, WA9ENA
CCA Member, Sr. EMC Engineer - Rockwell Collins

[AMRadio] RCA BTA-5T Transmitter

2007-04-05 Thread Robert A. Poff
Many months ago I posted on the list that I had an RCA BTA-5T to get rid of.

A few people responded, but after a crashed drive, I've lost names, etc.
So here we go again..

I have to get rid of our good old BTA-5T.
It's absolutely free, BUT you have to remove it from the building.
And I've now been presented with a May 1st deadline.

The 5T is a 5KW/1KW switchable rig with 3 phase power.

The rig is in operating condition, currently tuned to 910 kc.
Until recently, I've run it for an hour every few months or so.
There is a single 5762 in the PA.
This one has been modified with 3CX2500 modulators (by WD8DAS of this list
when he was C.E. here)

I found a link to this information sheet on the National Radio Club site
http://www.nrcdxas.org/articles/bta5t/

If you're interested, contact me via email.
Or if you're REALLY interested call me at 717-515-0607

It would break my heart to get to the point of cutting the old girl up.
I grew up listening to it.
Won't someone give it a good home?

I just built a Zepp antenna with tuned feeders: length of antenna is 247

Why am I getting more antenna current in one lead than the other? I
inserted an RF meter in each feedline before the antenna tuner. I believe

And as far as new technology, if you talk to most hams about trunking (now

Well, the concept of cellular phones was taken from the 2 meter ham
community. I remember having a keypad on my 2 meter hand held and an
autodial capability in the repeater long before cell phones were even
heard of. It used to amaze my non ham friends that I could call home
while driving down the highwaynot so impressive anymore.

Re: [AMRadio] BW 5100, 5100b differences?

2005-03-14 Thread Robert A. Poff
As I remember, my 5100 had a beefier set of iron than our clubs 5100B.
Also, I'm not sure if you could use the sideband generator with the 5100...

But of course don't forget that all the ATC over the ocean communications is
SSB.

Fun fact: All aviation voice communications is AM, albeit VHF.
 SpaceShip One isn't unique.

It's AM because the blocking effect that FM exhibits is considered
unacceptable. With AM, if two stations interfere you can usually hear
both signals to some degree through the heterodyne. With FM, one
station would block the other. The flight safety boffins wouldn't like
 that.

SSB of course would be too labor-intensive for aviation service.

[AMRadio] McCurrrdy Switcher

2004-04-27 Thread Robert A. Poff
Several months ago I had a McCurrdy switcher available for free.
I've lost the email address of the fellow that picked it up.

I've finally found the manual for the great pile.
Could you drop me a note with a mailing address.?

Thanks.
