Re: [AMRadio] Any AM ops in my area?
During my initial tune up, the transmitter acted as it it did not want to tune. There was an audible low pop. Then no power. Some one suggested maybe a breaker in the power supply chain, but I dont recognize one. The ham i got it from claimed that it worked. It seemed to, but it wouldnt tune and now no power. I followed tune up proceedure from manual exactly. I was using 80m xtal and antenna. I also have matching vfo. Yeah, I saw that when I was looking at manuals. Mine is a B model as well. I have the manual and diagrams for the B model. I will have to look into rr doing the caps. I have recently acquired new caps for my knight T50, but there never seems to be enough time. I have a new in the box TenTec 1340 still awaiting assembly after 6 years. Hahaha! Re: [AMRadio] facebook
Funny I use facebook every day. It does not do anything that you dont tell it to do. It does not auto export/invite your address book. You must confirm each person who wants to be your friend. Just like deleting or not posts you dont like. It is a great way to network with lost school chums and family you rarely see. You even have to tell it if you want email notifications from your page. There are many applications that can take your facebook friends list and generate spam wiithin facebook, but i always deny their access requests. Facebook is not the next great satan. It is a useful tool for those who use it. I even have a business page there that is growing. -Original Message- From: Jim Tonne to...@comcast.net Sent: Wednesday, April 14, 2010 19:40 To: Discussion of AM Radio in the Amateur Service amradio@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [AMRadio] facebook It seems like someone joins and FACEBOOK instantly takes their address book and sends out invitations. Anyone having any luck? My operating conditions seem to be poor. Heard some worked none. Not even on vhf fm. Most stations heard were on 40. None on 20. Faint on 75. Had better luck running 5 watts on RTTY last night. Worked 4 stations. WY7, in wyoming, a W5, a W6, and a W0. Heard lots of 6's, 7's, and stations all over US and Canada. Also heard Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, and a few I didnt recognize. All on 20 meters, ~ have a homebrew ground plane. I didnt hear any SSB/FM cx yet. You can key up, call CQ, and immediately know whether and how strong you would e heard by a station in the region where the internet-based receiver is ocated. I have found this resource very valuable in determining whether band supports ropagation anywhere !!! let alone to area where specific AM stations are ocated. It also may prove important as you check your 80meter antenna performance, and s you refine any audio shortcomings you may have. I wouldn't sweat the audio art of it for now, compared to getting on the air, but sure, you would want to now. Here's a screen shot, with audio, of how I heard my own station as I called CQ ecently. [AMRadio] comments
I dont know if anyone could hear me or not. If you could, please send me an email. I would like to know how that setup sounds. Before i begin my diatribe let me say that other than aprs, spread spectrum, ale, and ham over internet link, i like most facits of ham radio. That includes the dx capabilities of ssb, especially ssb qrp on the high bands. I just about like it all. I started out this morning on 7180 calling on am after listening to see if it was clear, and even asking if it was on ssb and am. 5 minutes into my calling a ssb op comes on asks if the frequency was being used then almost immediately calls several hams around the midwest including texas and canada I am sure that one of them had to have heard me say on ssb that the frequency was being used. Now i know that my setup is not the most efficient its a work in progress. I do know that my efficiency is around 12 watts out for the meager 100 watts to the antenna. I can usually work from NY state to Texas with it on ssb. So i am sure someone heard me. I was just ignored. This isnt the first time this has happened to me. It is irritating though! Someday i am going to build an amp and a heavy duty antenna for my truck so that i can feed a 1500 watt carrier to the antenna. I would bet that they could hear some cw or the am signal i could put out with that ( with my present effeciency that would be about 150 to 200 watts erp). I could put my mobile rice rig in beacon mode. That could be interesting. Thanks for trying to hear me. Maybe tomorrow on 7185 again if i am awake enough as i drive. 73, Todd __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Post: AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to amradio-requ...@mailman.qth.net with the word unsubscribe in the message body. [AMRadio] Any amplifier suggestions?
I am interested is a simple design hf amplifier for am cw on 160-80/75-40. These are the bands i operate on where the extra power would help. Fewer parts count the better. Ultimately lower cost the better. I have power supply parts and believe that i can generate around 2000 volts. I am slowly researching tubes and am leaning toward 2 or 4 tubes that can basically generate lots of watts at half to two thirds their ratings to prolong their life span. Perhaps tubes such as 811's, 810's, 833's, 4-400's. I am open to suggestions. I will need to build or acquire a heavy duty matching system as part of the amp. My goal is at least 300 Watts AM. I do not want to mess with systems that require cooling other than fans. I am not interested in modes for this amp other than am and cw. It will almost exclusively be used for am as i rarely use more than 5 watts on cw any way. Simpler cheaper is better for me. I appreciate your suggestions. Todd, Typically the linear amp will be the fewer parts and expense but with less output than a full plate modulated class C rig per a given tube. One of the simplest tetrode linear systems is to put a 50 ohm load resistor right on the grid of a big jug like a 4-1000 or a pair of 4-400s and use a zener to bias the cathode circuit or fil return. It will also require a screen supply. The idea in all of this is that if the grid is loaded with a 50 ohm dummy load, then it will not require tuning. The small amount of input capacitance will be negligible on the lower freq bands. And it should not require neutralization. OTH, If you are going linear with a triode or triode connected tetrodes then you will want to go to a grounded grid linear. No screen supply, no neutralization, but does require more drive and/or may require drive tuning __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Post: AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to amradio-requ...@mailman.qth.net with the word unsubscribe in the message body. Another Todd! Run for the hills! It's a very good question, and more to the point of 'you're either on the air, or online talking about it'. The bad thing about the internet is that it allows you to keep up with things during work hours (when you'd not normally be on the air anyway). Chatted with John KX5JT around 7160 yesterday through the interference and static. W9AD joined in, and by the time we decided to sign out, conditions had improved just in time for the band to take a dive. Bob, if you can go below 7200 let's give it a go. BC stations are becoming an issue around this time above there. I just fired up the station a few minutes ago, been busy on the phone much of the day with biz and real estate matters. Re: [AMRadio] smart alec question
Well, i had heavy noise and interference from rain and truck. Called on 7180 for 20 minutes no replies. Thats ok. I tried. Heard a very strong ssb signal that was on 7184. And they complain about how wide AM is! I had to dial down half a kc to get clear enough to listen for replies. If you heard me let me know. -Original Message- From: Todd, KA1KAQ ka1...@gmail.com Sent: Tuesday, September 22, 2009 4:11 PM To: Discussion of AM Radio in the Amateur Service amradio@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [AMRadio] smart alec question T-storms rolling through here atm, the remnants of Fred. Should be clear in the next half hour. [AMRadio] 10 meter mp3 player
What a great idea! Now you can get one, mod it for 11 meters and play endless hours of music for all the good buddies! [AMRadio] Tower advice
I have inherited a Mosley tribander with an 18 ft boom. It did not come with a salvagable tower. I have 3 sections of standard TV tower (steel ladder style 3 corner.) I can probably acquire 2 more easily and cheaply. What I would like to do is use one of the 10 ft sections as a base in sufficient concrete for a solid base. The at around 10 ft above ground install a hinge plate to be able to lay the tower over for maintainence. My goal is 35 ft height for the beam with a small extension for a small 2 meter beam and ground plane. I plan to use heavy guy wires on all three sides. Does this seem plausable? Where should I take extra caution? Thanks. [AMRadio] 40 m SWBC
I have been watching this for a few years. 2 years ago I tried to start a campaign to get SWBC stations to move voluntairly. All I got in reply was that their assignments were established by treaty. I would assume that the same applies here and that they will have no choice but to move now. __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Post: AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to amradio-requ...@mailman.qth.net with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
