well bob, W1PE pointed out to me that I had fat fingered the keyboard again and typed 'can't' when I should have typed CAN. [AMRadio] early am AM
hey everyone. I actually got on the air this morning around 2:30 am central. Worked Brave Dave, W4QCU up in Oak Ridge. I found him on 3885 and we moved down to 3870 and had a real good qso. I was using the ranger driving a pair of 813's for about 200 watts and my full wave vertical loop and Dave was quieting the noise very well. Currently using a ten tec paragon for rx'ing I had not worked Dave since November 23, 2006. Got my AM bug back. Now, when I get the NC183D next week I'll have a real am station again. hope to work you all soon 73 Ronnie - W5SUM __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

RE: [AMRadio] AMers should not operate other modes??
Ive operated in all area's of the AM window. I'm friends with all parties. Though I, too, deplore the habit of calling names at anyone who operates anything other than AM, I guess we have to remember that we are all different. If more and more of us let these parties know that it is not suitable to be using these terms in that way, maybe, just maybe, sooner or later, they will get the idea. There are other habits by some of those that are equally as bad in my opinion, like making rude comments about somone while he is talking, talking over his carrier. This just makes AM'ers all look like a bunch of lids. We have to remember that 'they' are out there listening. Like my ole granny always says, it only takes one bad apple to ruin the cider... Re: [AMRadio] The ARRL, Elmers, and Mentors
I've been licensed since 1968 and I am pretty sure I have been hearing "Elmer" since then. I know I have referred to my mentor, the first W5SUM, Robert Ehrhardt, as my Elmer since I was a pup. Why should "Elmer" go away? Whats wrong with that term? Sure means more to me than the phrase "Political Correctness" which I consider a festering sore on the face of society LOL. Re: [AMRadio] 12/07
I have personally known two men, both now deceased, who were at pearl harbor. One was a ham, Tom, WB5PJP, who watched it all happen while taking cover under a large truck ( he was in the army air corps). you know, I have several old wooden radio's from the era, and I have always imagined a family sitting around one of them listening to all of this unfold. Incredible. I will say thanks to all vets of all of our wars who were willing to put thier lives on the line doing what was right. My own father made two combat jumps with the 82nd A/B, at Normandy, and in Holland. all of these men and women left big footprints. [AMRadio] I will trade a SX-28 for a BC348!!!
Wanted BC348 in operating condition and already converted to AC operation. Must be electrically sound. Will trade a complete SX-28 in working condition. There are some caveats however. Someone who had this in the past has done a transistorized conversion on the IF's. These transistors are mounted on tube bases. I don't know if you could pull them out and put the original tubes back in or not. This receiver does work!!! I have NO information on the conversion. Front panel is good, better than most I have seen. Cabinet is good. Lid is not warped like some. Audio Control has incorrect knob but otherwise, all knobs are good. ALL THE DEADLY paper caps in the inaccessible area under the band switch have already been changed out to orange drops by some brave soul. If you have never done this yourself.. well.. never mind. Its already done. S-meter works, dials are good. What more can I say. I'm trying to re-create on of my novice stations, thats why I want a BC348. MUST NOT have any new holes in the front panel, an S-meter or any of that crap. Just a BC348 converted to AC with the cabinet and correct knobs. A shock mount base would be nice. I think this is more than a fair trade, especially for the person that gets the SX-28. let me know and Merry Christmas to all of you fellers Ronnie - W5SUM __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

I think.. time will tell LOL Im awaiting cooler weather, I generally don't get on AM much from May through September, My shack is just tooo hot but the work bench is actually clean, all test equipment is accessable and who knows, maybe I will finish the repairs on two rx's, get the homebrew finished, do some mods I want to do to the Globe King, and etc, in time for the fall AM season.. probably just a loose nut between the chair and microphone LOL just joking.. Geoff is a good friend, I gotta jab at him every once in a while!! I think the problem is still with him though and in a IM QSO with him yesterday we discussed the possibility of bad mica's in the output stage. This is a common failure in the Valiant, but, they usually short and blow the rf choke on the bottom of the plate choke in the valiant. I'm not completely sure that would be the case in the Viking. I had virtually no deflection from my wattmeter. Suddenly, a fellow in Tucson broke in and said "hey I can still hear you guys" LOL 4 years ago when propogation was still decent, I worked 13 european countries on ten am with a barefoot ranger. you just don't need a great deal of power to make good contacts on ten meters Ronnie - W5SUM -- Original Message --- From: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Discussion of AM Radio" Sent: Tue, 4 Apr 2006 13:48:12 -0400 Subject: Re: [AMRadio] 10 Meter AM Frequencies > I'm somewhat intrigued with converting a CB radio to 10 meters from > the pure technical perspective, but the typical 4 watts AM power > leaves a LOT to be desired. Re: [AMRadio] AM Transmitter Advice??
Larry for years I used a pair of 813's in grounded grid and drove them with a ranger. It produced great sounding audio. I still have that as my backup to my globe king. 813's are great tubes. The only drawback for me is I like to operate on ten meters and 813's are shakey at best, up there. good luck on your project, Iknow you will enjoy it. ronnie - W5SUM -- Original Message --- From: Larry Keith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Discussion of AM Radio Sent: Mon, 30 Jan 2006 12:06:43 -0800 (PST) Subject: [AMRadio] AM Transmitter Advice?? > Well, Let's see if we can change the subject.. 8-) > > I am gathering ideas for a homebrew AM transmitter.. > > My friend, KR1S (Jim Kearman) is designing an AM > transceiver, for me. [AMRadio] Kenyon Information Sought
I have yet to ever see anyone get information back when they needed Kenyon "S" number transformer info but here goes S-502122 another number on it is 8445491-2 This is a large 240V primary, 5000vct secondary ( 2500 - 0 - 2500 ) transformer that weights 65 lbs. This came out of a RCA Television Transmitter that was taken out of service about 5 years ago. I think the 8445### number is the RCA P/N and the "S" number is the Kenyon Part number. It is my belief that the "S" numbers Kenyon transmformers and chokes are OEM parts, made for a particular manufacturer. I have NEVER found them listed in any cataloge. What I need to know, is what is the current capability of this transformer. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, God Bless, and 73's Ronnie - W5SUM

Re: [AMRadio] Pi-Net vs Link Couple
Mike I'm the fellow that is going to build up a Class C final using a 450TL. I would love to get a copy of that schematic for the 450TH rig in the Editors and Engineers handbook. I have a few of those, but apparently, not that one. I have a very nice B&W 850A or 852 that I can use in this rig. Either should handle that tube fine, considering I'm not going to run much more than 2500 volts on it anyway. Maybe 3000. I just got the worled biggest honker daddy plate transformer from W5OMR. 8200V center tapped ( 4100 - 0 - 4100 ) at 4.5KVA !!! Yeah suh, takes 3 men and a dolly to move it!! This will be a fun project. 73's & batten down the hatches, here comes Rita.. Re: [AMRadio] part needed
it has various voltages available, from 18 - 75 volts I THINK.. don't have the specs in front of me right now. 100-250ma would work.. nothing heavy needed here R -- Original Message --- From: "GBrown" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Discussion of AM Radio" Sent: Sun, 11 Sep 2005 12:05:53 -0400 Subject: Re: [AMRadio] part needed > Ronnie: > What's the voltage a mils rating your looking for? quiet? not at my qth.. noise was 40/S9 this morning at 4:45 so I just shut it all down and went and caught another hour of sleep! 73's de W5SUM -- Original Message --- From: Geoff <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Discussion of AM Radio Sent: Mon, 27 Jun 2005 09:02:03 -0500 Subject: [AMRadio] is it quiet > or is it me? > > 73 = Best Regards, > -Geoff/W5OMR > > __ > AMRadio mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html > Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net --- End of Original Message ---
Re: [AMRadio] roundtable ettiquette
I gotta tell ya, I enjoy a good AM roundtable more than any other mode! Nice to get to know the other ham your talking to, and what he does, his family, his various rigs and etc etc etc.. Over the last 8 years, I have operated almost exclusivly AM. I am the fellow who can never seem to keep the 'evolution of rotation' straight, and I'm sure I've been cussed many times for handing it to the wrong guy, but I sure have enjoyed every QSO!!
