RE: [AMRadio] Can You Believe It? Johnson 500 / Collins 30K
I agree with you Todd...I sold my KW-1 in 1992 for $22,000.00 and was happy to get it...I found a Johnson 500 for a guy in Florida for $2500 in 2000 and he was pleased as punch... I just paid $425 for an SX42 but I wanted it and was willing to pay it... So go figure If you want it bad enough you pay for it... I always try to find rigs in good cosmetic shape paint-wise simply because it's the part of restoration I'm not well versed in, but I don't let a few flaws stop me from picking up an interesting rig (if it's within my price range, of course). Zorched parts, missing parts - generally not a problem. The 30K was actually a post-war model, some say styled after the pre-war 30J (one nice looking transmitter). In 1948 the selling price for the later 30K-1 and 310A-1 exciter was $1450. If you run that through an inflation calculator it comes out to $12647.39 in 2006 dollars. If you run $4000 backwards to 1948 dollars, it comes to $458.59. Certainly not chump change back then, but roughly one third of the 30K-1 selling price. The KW-1 tracks the same: the $3850 price in 1952 would've cost $28873.34 in 2006 dollars. Most KW-1s in nice shape the last decade have sold between $20-$25K with a few highs and lows either side. Not too far off, really. But clearly - if you'd bought a KW-1 new and stored it away for 55 years, you'd get your money back but not much more, so not a very good "investment". The Johnson 500 price between 1956-63(not sure if it varied) lists as $949.50 factory assembled. Even going with 1963 dollars to 2006, it still comes out at $6114.65. You'd pay that much or more for some of the latest plastic whizbang boxes. So it really comes down to what you want, what you enjoy, and what you're comfortable paying for your toys. Supply/demand, desirability, etc. It's only worth to you what you're willing to pay. And Wayne, I can certainly relate! I feel the same about the KW-1, bought mine in 1988 with a bunch of other stuff from an antique shop for $350 and had maybe $50 in it at the time (didn't even know what it was beyond a BIG transmitter). Wouldn't pay the going rate for one today, at least not with my current income. Had offers over the years to sell it, no way. RE: [AMRadio] Can You Believe It? Johnson 500 / Collins 30K
I had a 30K-1, SN9 and it was a good basic radio. It needed some help making it sound its best and run comfortably at 300 watts output, but was a good rig. I paid $200.00 for it about 25 years ago and sold it a few years ago for $2000.00 and a KWM2a. I never had the matching exciter. The 30K-1 has got to be one of the largest 300 watt ham transmitters ever made Brett N2DTS > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of david knepper > Sent: Saturday, September 15, 2007 9:30 AM > To: Discussion of AM Radio in the Amateur Service > Subject: Re: [AMRadio] Can You Believe It? Re: [AMRadio] Can You Believe It? Johnson 500
I paid more than that for one a few years ago on either this list or on a Collins list that had the Viking 500 along with Collins gear for sale from a ham.--I do not recall- He had about 10 serious offers. I had the first right to it--he was a real gentleman--I was in Afghanistan at the time and he gave preference to me. No pressure from him as it seemed very easy to sell at the time. It was restored and I shipped it off to Howard Mills for final tweaking and to have some audio mods done. Howard said thaey are rare and at times go for more than the desk kilowatt due to the scarcity of the 500 and that they are closer to legal limit AM then the desk. 73 Glenn Zemanek kc2fzv > I'm surprised it didn't go for more. Re: [AMRadio] Can You Believe It? Johnson 500
Not really. Every day seems to be a unique adventure and even more so when there's a new software load. AM never sounded so good. And, each day brings the question, "what's coming tomorrow". There isn't an AM rig over my last 45 years that has provided me with so much fun. Even adjacent channel interference is almost a thing of the past. But, if you're one that needs to "put your hand on the radio:, this isn't the equipment for you. Re: [AMRadio] Can You Believe It? Johnson 500 / Collins 30K
Very true Wayne, But as I've been told numerous times in the past few months, the days of the cheapo "for the asking" old rigs seem to be going away. Oh well. Still, the 30K1 is a prewar rig, and they are rare (as Jack mentioned). $3400 for a 500 Viking seems over the top. Part of the higher prices could be Baby Boomer nostalgia. For Boomers, the rigs they remember seeing a lot of when they were new hams, were rigs of this nature. They were what was lusted for. I mean no offense when I say this, BTW. For me as a Gen Xer, it would be stuff from the 70s & 80s. I STILL regret getting rid of my Drake R4B & T4XC in late 1992, and I STILL wonder whatever posessed me to get rid of the Drake TR7 I had, after only having it for a short time in 1993. All 3 rigs are considered to be fantastic radios, that command high prices. But, back then they were just old gear to me. I paid only $140 for the Johnson Viking Ranger I briefly had back in 1995 (no thanks to living in an area with Channel 2 TV [and marginal reception at that], I went QRT on AM at the time). Nowadays, you're doing good if you get one for $250 or $300. Once again, oh well. 73, Ellen - AF9J - Original Message - From: "Sara & Wayne Steiner" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Discussion of AM Radio in the Amateur Service" Sent: Saturday, September 15, 2007 10:34 AM Subject: Re: [AMRadio] Can You Believe It? ePay is ePay always will be. The e-mailing lists are a far better place to buy and sell if you are more patient. RE: [AMRadio] Can You Believe It? Johnson 500
Good Morning to the AM'rs & SWLs, I'll take a stab at the topic, the value of this Johnson 500 on epay. Transmitters and receivers are a touchy feely thing with me. I like to handle the merchandise. So, epay isn't where I'd purchase any transmitter or receiver. On the other hand, watching junkson "500s" on the auction place for the last 4 years, the $3K range seems to be just about right for a complete working 500. Yes, some have gone for $1.5K or so but all the big pieces were not included and or it was clear the 500 in question wasn't working. In the end, buyer and the seller determine the selling price. A Johnson 500 is my Studio A transmitter, purchased in the fall of 2004 for less than half of the 500's price just sold on epay. Most of the big pieces were there, it didn't work or had been on the air in maybe 15 years or so. The swinging choke in the PS/Mod had been replaced with a piece of junk choke, mod tranny had lots of talkback, needed recapped, missing the three interconnecting cables, no key. As added value, some CB mods were included in the keying circuit?? A couple AC relays in the PS to replace DC relays, of course this didn't work because the relays function on DC voltage from the bias supply. You get the picture! After two months of work, day & night, it finally made some RF. Retirement let me spend this amount of time on the transmitter. If I were to sell it today at $3K, good chance I'd lose money, not even considering my labor. EF Johnson only made 865 of these transmitters, I'm happy with mine. 73's wd8kdg Craig __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

I know of another one in "5-land" that is being listed (with a 75A-1 receiver) for $12K!!! It's like everything elseit is what someone is willing to pay for it that sets the value. Does that make them foolish?Maybe so, but if they have the money and want it bad enough, they will pay the price. Just like a 1957 Chevy that once sold for $2500 may now be worth $30,000. The 30K series are very nice transmitters and Collins didn't make very many of them, so they have become quite "rare" and, consequently valuable. The 30K-1 is the ham band version and it is the rarest and therefore the most expensive. Frankly, I think the 30K-4 and 30K-5 are nicer rigs and they are better looking. They are commercial versions and have built-in xtal controlled exciters and two complete RF tank circuits for instantaneously switching between two bands. They are a bit more common than the 30K-1s, but still quite scarce. I have owned my 30K-4 for several years and I love it. I was very fortunate to find it and I certainly didn't pay $4K for it, but had to spend a bit of time and money to get it up and running. I really enjoy the old "St James Gray" Collins gear. Yes, it generally is somewhat expensive, but it is classic equipment and was the standard for quality in its day. Collins gear is good stuff, but my motive for owning it has always been the enjoyment of operating and enjoying it on the air.not just setting it on the shelf or collecting it as an investment. For ~$3000 you can get a rig that can be updated almost on a daily basis, has no knobs to clean, has what seems like an endless number of personalized settings, and sounds great on AM and SSB.
