Jim - take a look around Parts Express:
http://www.parts-express.com/home.cfm

Problem is, nowadays anything in the 10 range is likely to be a woofer
or sub-woofer that's meant to be used as part of a 2 or 3-way system and
what you want is a good old-fashioned full range speaker, which is
proving to be harder to find than I thought it would be. But here's a
low-cost 10: that I think I'd be willing to try:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=290-262

While the frequency response of this $17 woofer is given as 74-5000 hz,
it might sound pretty good. If you wanted more highs, you could try the
approach used by Jensen and others who used to make full-range speakers
by suspending a smaller PM speaker across the cone with a simple series
capacitor crossover to handle the midrange frequencies.

Look at the speaker ads in Part Express, and other sites, that refer to
speakers as speaker drivers. They generally have the classic wide
range speaker response as in thegood of days when we went to the local
stores to buy a replacement speaker.

The re-cone option isn't as expensive as you may think.

I had a nice pair of JBL L-100's that I got from Dennis, W7QHO when he moved
away from Maryland. Both the foam speaker surrounds were shot, as were the dust
covers on the speaker coils.

A place in Pennsylvania re-did them both for $60. Even if today it's $100,
that's for TWO speakers and within your price range for the single.

email me off-list and I'll put you in touch

Hey Jim, ya might look at ceiling speakers to mount in the original
enclosure. Even if smaller driver the ceiling mount may make up the diff and
some of the modern speakers sound real good.

Everything today is for a lot of power, as in guitar amps, that is what
drives the price up. You can't just buy a 10 watt 10 inch speaker any more
or they seem to be hard to find anyway.

Re: [AMRadio] I need som advice

2009-10-19 Thread manualman
I've bought a number of replacement speakers from Parts Express over the
years.

Just recently got a pair of woofers for my old Lafayette stereo speaker
enclosures.

Boy my ears are pinned back on this one. I need a 10 inch speaker
 for
my old HQ 129 speaker. The cone in the present one is just about
 gone.

So I thought about shellac and toilet paper or something similar,
 but am
not that good with my hands. So I looked a couple of places on the
 web.
I haven't looked for a speaker since about 1959, and needless to
 say,
one like I would like to have is nearly $100. Now am I crazy or is
 this
 high?

All I would like to have is a round, mid-range speaker that is 10
 inches
in diameter which won't require I sell my home to buy. Can any one

steer me to a place other than what I find on the search engines.
 The
first 10 pages or so is all full of speaker sellers who pay to be
 listed
and list only stuff the audio nut would buy.

 Jeeze!
