Me too, but its harder to do. I have a 10 car garage full of "junk"
that I think is "treasure". But it seems that my 'treasure" is
always the next guys "junk". For instance, three antique fax machines
from Western Union, the ones that transmit signatures using heat
sensitive paper and an arc. I got them years ago to make a weather
fax for my airplane hanger, but never did. The problem with money is
that, as you say, disappears within weeks. Down a black hole called
by various names such as dinner, wife's hair dresser, gasoline, etc.
And another reason to hold "things" instead of dollars is that
inflation makes dollars worth less with time and things worth more
with time.

That's why I would much rather trade radio stuff for other radio stuff,
rather than to try to sell for cash. Inevitably, whenever I ask enough $$
to make a sale worth my while, someone thinks I am asking too much and
ripping the other person off. All dollar(ette)s are exactly the same,
steadily lose buying power every day that passes, and will probably be gone
without a trace within weeks, if not days. But if I can trade what I think
is a nice piece in exchange for a different piece that someone else thinks

Agreed! That's one (of many) of the great things about free trade and
capitalism - if each party involved doesn't believe they are gaining,
then no deal transpires. If each does, of course, it does. Nothing is
forced.

I've gotten a lot of hamfest fodder for free over the years, from
various sources. I give some away (0% profit); sometimes I sell some of
it for a small sum (which makes the % profit infinite!). In each case
where I have charged the buyer was very happy with the outcome.

In the time that it took to read all these emails on digital multimeters,
etc., I could have been on AM populating the bands with "angel music."

No wonder the bands are a bit devoid of AMers - too much typing I think!

mentioning that a guy likes to have some stuff around to give away to

Setting aside that it is just nice to give a gift now and again, a good

I second that motion.

When dealing with a small number of items, a high percentage profit is
needed to make it worth the time. If they bought 10 and sold them for
a $6 profit, thats only $60 for a lot of gathering and distributing.
Now if we were talking 100 items and all could be sold in one
afternoon at the Hamfest, that would be a different storymaybe
But just 10 items which would probably take a couple of Hamfests to
get rid of them all. Thats a LOT of work for 60 bucks!

Personally, I wouldn't do it just for dinner money!!

I believe someone said they could buy some meters at $3 plus shipping,
then bring them to a hamfest and sell them for $7 to $8. That's 133 to
166 percent mark up I'd pay a 4 to 5 buck premium to save the trouble

Yes Bernie I agree.

And also true gifts that are unconditionally given to friends and strangers
are those that need not be mentioned publicly, as if so, they are not gifts

Yes, this is rather sad. But what goes around, comes around. I think

The shipping to ZIP 17070 would have been $9.99
for 10 and $11.99 for 20, so
buy in bulk to get the most out of your shipping
cost.

Re: [AMRadio] MCM Electronics digital multimeter for $2.99

2009-09-24 Thread Vic Mukal
My favorite Fluke meter stays on my workbench for the boatanchor tasks but
these bargain meters are fine for the garage/auto work, around the house,
for emergencies where voltages over 300volts are rare. As said in other
posts, there is a place in our tech environment for a $3 that we won't care
if it gets knocked around or is not as precise as a $300 meter.

But buy what you need - don't buy 10 or 20 of them just to save on the
shipping. My junk box is full of excess goodies that I bought in bulk over
the last 40 years to "save" money and never have and will probably never
use.

Re: [AMRadio] MCM Electronics digital multimeter for $2.99

2009-09-24 Thread Tom Chesek
For $3 it is a good move if you only need a basic meter. It is nice to have
one in your car if you run into car problems. Your kids and grandkids can
use them to check batteries for their gadgets. You are correct that you
won't be doing an HV work in your boatanchors. The only downside that I see
is the A23 battery will cost nearly what the meter cost when you have to
replace it, but again this is a $3 meter and you can throw it away! Who
cares if the leads are permanently attached, again $3 meter.

Thanks for the tip, Steve.

I just ordered 3 using the promo code - one for my emergency kit, one for
the office, and one for the garage. Note that shipping is a little steep ($
8.99) if you just order one.

Re: [AMRadio] MCM Electronics digital multimeter for $2.99

2009-09-24 Thread Tom Chesek
I was able to order 20 using that promo code. Often I find that promo codes
are case specific although in this case it doesn't matter because I tried it
both ways and it works. I like the idea of populating the house & cars with
one as well as my kids needs. This will leave a few left for friends.
Whenever someone gives me something it brightens my day. Once before I found
unusual coffee mugs that had a cool logo that said Radio Coffee with a
picture of a beaconing antenna tower. They were a hit and I was able to buy
them at a couple of bucks each too. Thanks for the heads up on that meter.

I bought a handful of them and gave them to my
kids for their toolkits. I kept a couple for my
"throw it in the truck toolkit". If one gets
bunged up at field day or working on some "field"

Re: [AMRadio] MCM Electronics digital multimeter for $2.99

2009-09-23 Thread Don Buska
I think you mean it as a resolution of .001 volts. Accuracy is
indicated as ±(1.5% + 2digits), which is still pretty accurate.
Although unlike larger DMM's I doubt it has internal adjustment to
recalibrate, so stability of that accuracy is really undefined. For our
ham work it's a good deal at the three dollar price though.
