The Collins Radio Association's advisory board would like its members to
participate and support in an AM Net on 40 meters and W3CRA would be willing
to serve as an alternate net control.

Thank you.

RE: [AMRadio] Re: AMRadio Digest, Vol 8, Issue 33

2004-10-10 Thread Brian Carling
Sorry but RENO is way too far away for daytime on 40m AM.

You could easily start a net out in the southwest though
with the guys in that area. There IS a lot of interest if someone
will step up to the plate and get it going.

We should all talk about the steps necessary to keep a good AM
net functional.

My idea is that you ned a main net manager and then two
other backup net control stations who will be committed to help out
when the regular guy can't be there to call up the net.
Run it properly with a brief explanatory preamble.
Take a brief standby for emergency and priority traffic
on the frequency. Always be ready and willing to relinquish
the frequency in an emergency.

I would suggest a roundtable format where the net control
keeps track of whose turn it is, and passes it around appropriately.
Try to avoid having ten minute monologues that wear everyone
out. Make most transmissions say 3 to 5 minutes long for example.
Then after about an hour, you go to a brief Boatanchor Swap
session for anyone who wants to list radio gear for sale and wanted.

I think this could be a grand success, since much of the old
nets have disappeared and we have great daytime propagation out
to about 500-600 miles with even small 30-50 watt signals
often being heard at S9 on 40m.

Comments? Additions? Corrections? Improvements?
Suggestions?

I would love to see 4 or 5 new 40m AM nets started in the daytimes
on Saturday mornings when signals can opfet ne at their peak.

What say you?

It would work from Texas to Florida, especially along the Gulf coast,
if you could start the net at 12:00noon, EST.

The 7.290 Traffic Net was started by AM'ers back in the '50s, when '
Fone' was first allowed on 40m. They occupy the 5th call area.

If you start the net at noon Eastern Time, then at Noon Central,
those of us from Mississippi to Brownsville would be able to check in.

This may be a diversion from AM, BUT you can easily do what I did
and convert the ART13 to grid block keying by putting two banana
jacks in the perforated rear copver.
No need for drilling holes.

Obligatory AM content:

I am seriously thinking about trying to start a Saturday morning
AM net on 7290 kHz for stations in the far southeast USA.
This would mostly extenmd to Florida and Georgia and anyone
farther afield that can hear us.

Is anyone interested in helping me get this started?

even though most folks have cable TV should I build a TVI filter for the
transmitter anyway?

It can't hurt. I still run them on my rigs, but I don't think it is a
necessity unless your neighbors are using a regular antenna or rabbit ears and
you
are living right on top of them. I would concentrate on getting the rig going
and worry about building a filter later.
