Re: [AMRadio] Seeking tubes

2005-07-08 Thread Donald Chester

Is the 849 about 10-12 high with the same type of pins? Looks about
the same but no 'necks'? If so, I have a well used one still in the
wooden crate and another with a case of the rattles (filament ist
kapoot, methinks). Might consider trading one for a 204

The 849 is similar, but bigger than the 204A. It's the predecessor to the
833A. The RCA book says the 849, 204-A and 851 should all be mounted upside
down so that the filament is up and the plate down.

I have run into a couple of hams on the air running 204A's.

The old pre-WW2 kilowatt RCA broadcast transmitter ran four 204A's in
pushpull parallel, with a pair of 849 modulators. Later, they changed to a
pair of 833A's modulated by another pair - and even sold a modification kit
to convert the older transmitter to 833A's.

Those older tubes were always expensive. Back in the mid 30's, a 204A sold
for about $85 - the equivalent to hundreds of dollars in today's money. The
newer 833(A) sold for a fraction of that. That's why BC stations were
interested in retrofitting their transmitters.

In the mid 70's I ran into about a dozen Amperex 849A's piled in a cubby at
Young Engineering in Salem MA.  I couldn't get the guy to reduce his price;
he wanted about $20 each for them, as is. No way to test them, but they
looked good. I turned him down, and later, they apparently all got broken
as they shuffled stuff around in the old warehouse.

I still kick myself for not taking a chance on those tubes.

I'd call this list the rarest of the rare in ham tubes. A 204? Why not a
Deforest spherical Audion?--that would probably be easier to find. And when you
do find them, dust off your checkbook--you're going to need it.

Well all on that list are pretty rare with perhaps the 211 being the exception
- at least around here in North East Ohio.

I believe the Nela Park GE plant turned those things out during the war. These
were of course the VT-4C.

I remember at one hamfest about 15 years ago I bought a lot of them for a buck
a piece NIB.

They still turn up all over the place. I even found a few in Brooksville, Fl
about 2 years ago.

I have a couple of the earlier 211 without the graphite plates. Apparently the
audiophiles like these better. But I would much rather have the graphite
plates.

Well, I have enough to re tube my BC 375 several times over. And heck, maybe
I'll get the darn thing on the air one of these days.

I have no need to sell them but a couple might be available for trade.

You can never have too many radios.

So since they are so common, I'm assuming you have a large overstock to sell to

204s pop up on there from time to time, I see maybe 4-6 per year and
seldom look for them. Always wanted one for the collection. IMHO, the
base holders are FAR more difficult to find, although using an old
fuse clip for the plate cap is easy enough. August Link has a nice
DeForest Audion listed now, a mere $2800. Looks new though, including
patent label.

Is the 849 about 10-12 high with the same type of pins? Looks about
the same but no 'necks'? If so, I have a well used one still in the

Hi Don,

Whoa Nelly...!

Now where'd you get the idea that *I* had a heap of ol' 204A's for sale,
anyway...?!

The truth of the matter is, they DO appear on a semi-regular basis on
eBay --- but you have to be vigilant for them! Heck, I saw one sell out of
Canada a year or two ago for some FIFTEEN BUCKS!

This latest $25.00 jug was originally listed for FIFTEEN DOLLARS --- AND HE
HAD NO BIDDERS FOR IT!

I suggest, Don, that you expand your search for these vintage old bottles,
bite your lip if you're one of the ...anti-eBay crowd, simply make hay
while --- and WHERE --- the sun shines...
