Re: [AMRadio] 6V6 vs. 6L6

2008-02-13 Thread Jim Miller WB5OXQ in Waco
In audio circuits I have replaced 6v6 with 6l6 and they work. the 6l6 is
capable of more plate watts than a 6v6 but to get the best advantage you
need more plate voltage so I would use silicone diodes to replace the
rectifier tube and get a little more B+. I would not want to replace a 6l6
with a 6v6 though of the circuit was designed for 6l6's.

Are we talking just the metal tubes or the GT, GB, GC and G's? There is
quite a difference in all of these.

If you can believe my Rider Tube Caddy Substitution Guidbook, Yes! It shows
the 6L6 as a good substitute for the 6V6 and vica versa. Take note however
of Ed's comments on plate voltage.

RE: [AMRadio] 6V6 vs. 6L6

2008-02-13 Thread Ken Zuercher
Not to beat a dead horse, but a 6v6 used for audio can
be replaced by a 6L6. The 6L6 has a lower plate
resistance so an output transformer for a pair of 6V6s
will support a pair of 6L6s as the 6V6 plate
resistance is about 10K per pair where the 6L6 is
about 5K per pair. I have put 6L6s in many Fender
guitar amps to replace the 6V6s until I could get new
tubes. No problem at all. They do sound different
however. (I hope I described this right)

They plug pin to pin into the same socket but what is your application? For
starters the filament current is higher in the 6L6. At the same B+ voltage
they can be driven to higher plate current also.

Well now... You can replace a 6V6 with a 6L6, but not the other way 'round,
since the plate voltages are higher for 6L6's. Same basing, different plate
dissipation and power output.

Heck, even 6L6s aren't interchangeable.
Here is a link to a fine dissertation on the various
flavors of 6L6. I find it fascinating.
