Re: [AMRadio] More electricity

2007-03-31 Thread Jim Hill

Can't let this thread stop.
My son had a friend who would connect IC' s to 110V at their
electronics class, The IC's would break open and fire would shoot
out. A few years later the friend visited my son and they decided
to go to the class and say hello to the instructor. He gave them a
horrified look and started to quickly thumb though the attendance
records. He was quite relieved when his friend said they were just
back for a visit, and were not taking the class again.

I had a Tesla coil that used 4 810's in parallel as the oscillator
and was powered with a 2 kV power supply. I had plenty of trouble
with the primary arcing to the secondary, which caught the insulation
on fire. It was necessary to turn it off and blow out the fire. I
finally solved it by using a gallon glass apple juice jug, wrapping
a string soaked with gasoline around each end and setting the string
on fire. After a number of tries, I had a glass cylinder, which I
put between the primary and secondary. I took it to high school, set
it up in the physics lab. and turned it on. An arc jumped to the
wood window frame, catching the wood on fire. We turned off the
coil, blew out the fire, cleaned the frame, and discovered a nail
under the paint. Fortunately, the faculty didn't notice the
damage. Later the instructor came by and asked if anybody could be
shocked. I said you had to be careful, and discharged the 4ufF
filter cap with a screwdriver, which sounded like a pistol shot. At
his request, I took it home later that day.

My son worked as an assistant in the computer lab, helping students
with their problems. A big, husky kid couldn't get the computer
working ok, and my son pointed out that the student needed to put the
5 1/4 floppy in the drive first. The student tried, missed the slot,
and the floppy was wadded up like a piece of newspaper.

In high school we used to play a variation of chicken using a telephone
magneto. Several people would join hands in a circle, except for two who
would each grab one hand onto a wire attached to one of the terminals of
the
magneto. Then an assistant would start cranking the magneto - slowly at
first, then faster and faster until someone let go. The first person to
let
go was the chicken. That person would drop out, and the rest of the
group
would reassemble and try again, and again, each time eliminating one
person.
The last person remaining was the winner.

RE: [AMRadio] More electricity

2007-03-30 Thread D. Chester

Nope, you're sure not. My Radio Electronics instructor tired of people
fiddling with things on his desk in the lab and set a charged can
capacitor
on it. It wasn't long before we heard the yelp and then the laughter from
Mr. Cannon! No! It wasn't me. Of course, that was the early 60's, you'd
get sued for such fun nowadays!

Reminds me of another incident when I was in high school. Used to have a
neighbourhood kid would come over to the house and pester me. I had to
tolerate him because his mother and my mother were good friends and
co-workers. He would fiddle with stuff on my workbench, and he loved to
pick up my roll of solder and chew on the end of the wire. I suppose lead
poisoning takes a long time to show any noticeable effect.

It finally occurred to me a way to cure him of the problem. One day when I
saw him coming, I quietly substituted a roll of acid core solder for my
normal roll of rosin core. Sure enough, it wasn't long until he picked it
up and put the end of the wire in his mouth. I don't have to explain what
happened next. I told him that I had switched to a new brand of solder,
and from now on it would always be like that because that brand worked much
better than my old solder.

Needless to say, he never chewed on my solder again.

Funny, we used to do the same thing in our electronic shop at S.U.N.A.V.T.S.

When I was in High School Voc.Tech. in the late 60's we used to charge up
a good axial H.V. electrolytic with the leads wrapped around the ends and
say catch, to an unspecting classmate.
We also did the,... hold on to two can lytics with the cans connected to
the cap tester, a big CDE, and see how high the leakage test voltage would
get before letting go.

Betcha I'm not the only one with these type memories ;)

One wonders how many people have been left with a deep sense of awe and fear
due their unfortunate early contact with electricity. Seems this was
something of a very wide practice. Maybe that is why there aren't any
electric shops left in High Schools. ;^)
