By all means, get in there and TALK it up, Dan!

I'll be on in the morning. Might even make the early sked.

oh, yeah - and with the cold front moving through the entire nation, and
pushing off the NE coast this afternoon, the conditions should be plenty
quiet on the bands!

I'll be just north of Houston, TX this weekend, operating John/WA5BXO's
big rig, visiting with Otis/K5SWK, playing radio with BJ/WB5PKD,
swapping lies with Perry/W5KGZ... gonna be a great time.

Poor John is going to be off camping with his two sons, which are in Boy
Scouts. Family, of course, comes first.

As for the Apache, there's no better sounding Apache than Lum/K5AYD's.
I don't know what magic he's got up there in Cache, OK, but that 120w is
heard nationwide, in the noisey Summer months!

See you on the air, Dan!

The DX-60 mods are found on:

www.amwindow.org

Go to mods

Look for DX-60 (WC3K)

Should work just fine with the SB-200. MAY have to dial it back a bit,
BUT I doubt it.

My works fine with an LK-500ZB, pair of 3-500Zs. Should ALSO do fine
with the 572Bs

Going to make Bill's, (WC3K) SK, last mod to add PTT available as soonn
as work QUITS springing last minute assignments! Have to work again
tonight from 9PM until 5AM.

Put over 60 hours in last week.

Folks,

Go to the AM Window site.

Under DX-60 mods (WC3K), you'll find a modulation mod to monitor
exceeding 100%. VERY easy to do, AND inexpensive. IF the led flashes,
you are exceeding 100%. This is a beautiful mod, and Bill used the LED
in lieu of a front panel screw. Completely reversible, and NO extra
holes in the panel.

maintain the same 'Q'. I might be tempted to use some sort of
negative cycle

loading to contain the modulator, and minimize splatter by keeping the
negative modulation below 100%, and letting the positive peaks fly
upward
beyond 100%. Doing this however may raise the PEP drive power too
high for
the linear, so that's another issue to contend with. Running both
modulator
and final RF stage at reduced B+ may still be the best approach when
driving
an amplifier with low drive requirements. Another option is to use
the 2e26

and low B+ for really low drive amplifiers.

The reason the 2E26 was suggested (I've heard it several times,
m'self) is that it requires exactly the same B+, screen voltage, grid
voltage and everything else that the 6146 does. The 2E26 just has
half of the plate dissapation.

Therefore, ass/u/me'ing 600V for B+, and half the current (50mA vs
100mA in the 6146) the final impedance changes from 6000 ohms to
12,000 ohms. You would think that it would be easier for the
modulators to work into a higher impedance range.

I like the idea of using the 300 or so Low Voltage supply on the
final, but I think for audio sake, I'd leave the B+ up on the
6L6/1614/7027's

300v @ 50mA would still be 6k ohms of Z in the final.
(not to mention half of the current being consumed by the modulation
transformer secondary, and therefore further away from saturtion)

As for keeping the audio at a 'tame' level, there is no better tool
for operating AM than a good O'scope because (as Don Chester/K4KYV has
often said)"
"Operating your AM rig without an O'scope, is like driving you car at
night, without headlights."

I have also heard that you can just replace the
6146 with a 2E26 and do nothing else. Is this true?
Andwhat are the tradeoffs, if any?

Any good AM rig with 10-20 watts carrier can be brought to legal limit with
a big G-G linear amplifier like the SB-220. A cleaned up (audio mods and
less carrier control) Heath DX-60 is a good companion to the SB-220.

If you want plate modulation. my vote would be for something like a Johnson
Viking Ranger II. There are tons of modification sites on the Ranger, and
even in stock form these do pretty well. You do usually need to drop the
power a bit to keep from over driving most linears. One modification is to
run the RF Final 6146 and modulator off the low B+.

I'm a bit biased, as a tube audio guy, but I would go for a transmitter
that has a push-pull plate modulator for the final.

For the receiver, find one that is double conversion or better and has
selectable bandwidth via LC filters and a crystal filter. tuned circuits
are not so sharp, but sound real good when wide open on a strong signal!

The Hallicrafters SX-28, to me, is one of the best sounding AM receivers
but they drift a bit and are not that sensitive. Can be pricey too.
