Most activity takes place mornings-mid afternoon on weekends (I work weekdays, so can't comment beyond Sat-Sun) when the band starts to get noisy with international broadcast stations. Sometimes it's very late in the day, and occasionally band conditions are good at night. Noise and interference affects us east coast types more and earlier than the gang in the midwest. 7.280-7.295 has regular activity, though some reports have been made of AM activity in the new, expanded phone portion as well. I've just never gotten down there. When I get my AM station on the air, I will likely be sending a fair amount of time on 40 (if there is activity) as my current antenna is a resonant 40M dipole. Exactly the route I took when returning to the air in 2006 after 11-12 years away. Spent about 2 months on 40 until getting the old 75m dipole up in late April. Ashtabula Bill hangs out on 40 a lot, had a very nice chat with him and W0VMC a couple weekends back. Planning to be on there over the weekend, if you get things working by then. If not, give a yell later if you want to do some on air testing as I'm not terribly far from your location. 73, Todd KA1KAQ __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
Re: [AMRadio] 40M AM (Was: re: Amateur Radio Exam Question)
I have the same interest. The longest dipole I can have is a 40M one. O live in a 4th floor RETIREMEN APARTMENT. I cannot have an outdoor antenna or access to the attic. My apartment is 20ft by 20ft with the livingroom window facing south. My antenna starts in SE corner. One leg goes west about 18ft to the SW corner then turns north to the NW corner of my bedroom. The other leg goes from the SE corner north about 20ft to the NE corner then turns west to the NW corner of my kitchen A couple of years ago I was hearing 40M SSB between 7200 and 7300 during contests. And at times I could hear people from Central California in the 7200 to 7300 segment even during non contest times. Right now the only time I am hearing anything on 40M is during contests. I've been able to use a transmatch on this 40M dipole before to get favorable results on 80M CW/DATA but it is a cloudburner for the most part and only good for regional work.
