Hi

Another very strong UO-11 pass here this evening. (0909 to 0922 utc, 60
deg) The signal became noisy with rapid fading just after UO-11 went into
eclipse at around 0919 but signals continued but gradually became weaker and
the fades deeper until I lost the signal in the noise about 1 minute before
LOS. I recorded the pass.

Hi,

I have received two reports from Keith N4ZQ (EL88ob) that he has heard
UO-11 on 19 November at 13:33 - 13:43, and on 22 November at 13:02 UTC.

He has sent me a WAV file of the second pass. Unfortunately, it's a
very low elevation pass, and probably will be difficult to decode, as it
contains a lot of noise. However it's definitely UO-11.

I'll be interested in receiving any other reports. The frequency is
145.826 MHz. Mode is FM. Further details are on my OLD website
www.users.zetnet.co.uk/clivewThere is an audio clip to help identify
the satellite.

Please e-mail me via the AMSAT reflector, or post to this bulletin board.

Not the switch unfortunately. The same problem occurs when controlled
by computer from Uni_trac 2000. Work about 25% of the time.

Hi Mike, KB8ZGL

Connect an AC voltmeter between A4 and A5 on rear of control box and
check if there is 24 volt AC when the rotator sticks.

If you have 24 volts when the rotator sticks connect an amperometer in
series with A4 or with A5 and check if the AC current flows as soon
the rotator sticks.

If the current flows when the rotator sticks probably the internal AC 100 uF
capacitor is defective or you have a mechanical problem inside the reduction
gear or into the ball bearing holder of your rotator

If you have a 100 uF AC capacitor in the junk box connect it across A4 and
A5 and try again to see the effect.

If you don't have an AC capacitor you can buit it by your self using two
electrolitic capacitors each 200 uF 250 volt DC and two diode 1N4007
or equivalent connected as per the following schematic diagram:

 - + + -
   |) |--|--| (|
   A4-| | |---A5
   |---||--|--|||
 1N4007 1N4007

If the rotator sticks and if the AC current don't flow you probably
have e limit switch SW6 or SW7 defective poor contact and high
resistivity between contacts.

Disconnect A4 and A5 from control box and using an ohm-meter
check the continuity of the motor windings

If one winding of the motor has a fail contact then your ohm-meter
will jump measuring the capacity of the AC capacitor.

This is what I would do easy and fast in your situation.

Have fun

[amsat-bb] Future scheduling of SO-67

2009-11-23 Thread Jan-Albert Koekemoer
Hello

Given that the SA-AMSAT payload on SO-67 is shared with the satellite back-up
TTC transponder, there is unfortunately not a way to keep the payload
switched on permanently, or even semi-permanently. For the lifetime of the
satellite we will therefore have to do with active scheduling.

In an effort to make this as painless as possible, I would like to request
comments on the possible use of regional coordinators, which I believe worked
quite well for SO-35. Such coordinators would then be responsible for
setting up schedules in advance for their specific regions, taking into
account obviously the pool of possible satellite passes, as well as local
events / fairs etc. We would then simply load the schedules on a weekly
basis.

Up 'till now I have mainly focused on Europe, RSA, South America, North
America / Canada, Japan and Australia / NZ. I would like to invite
suggestions for use of the payload over other regions as well. This adds to
the previous point.

Regarding possible activation at night: this is entirely possible, but would
have to be planned / managed more actively, given the power limitations in
eclipse. We have yet to experiment with this and see what the available
capacity would be.

Please mail responses to this bulletin board, or if you prefer, to my work
address: jak at sunspace dot co dot za

Best regards
Jan-Albert (ZR1JAK)

Hi!

I'll add my two cents worth. I heard the old familiar buzz loud and
clear on a Yaesu FT-530 HT and a hand held three element Yagi on the 1453 UTC
pass over Fort Worth, TX, this morning. It was certainly good to hear the
old familiar buzz and it reached full scale on the FT-530 during a good
part of the pass.

I was the VK/ZL coordinator for SO-35, and drew up the schedule for
the region for over a year. If I recall correctly, I was the first
of several regional coordinators.

The arrangement worked well, and I formed a close working
relationship with the SO-35 team. The work wasn't particularly
difficult, and having local knowledge, I could tweak the passes to
suit the needs of the local satellite community. I also helped the
SO-35 team test different transponder configurations (some worked
better than others), by offering feedback about how well the
different configurations worked, using my setup of known performance.

Based on my experience, I would recommend and encourage the use of
regional coordinators. It's not a particularly difficult job, it
takes the load off the satellite operators, and it provides a local
point of contact for satellite users to request passes for special
events, or to cover areas that were missed out.

 Hi Drew,

Yes I know how fustrating it was in pre-ISS days when the Shuttle was
launched into low inclination orbits - little chance of hearing it up in the
northern countries such as the UK. But it should give Amateurs in many
developing countries a chance to to work the sats using simple equipment and

It's really encouraging to see that the Indonesian national society ORARI

Quoting Louis McFadin w5...@mac.com:

There hasn't been much said on the various news outlets about the
second ISS EVA tomorrow morning at 07:30 AM EST 12:30 UTC. During that
EVA the first task is to install two antennas on the Columbus Module.
One is for an experiment for the European Space Agency and the other
is a dual band 2m/70CM antenna for ARISS (Amateur Radio on ISS) very
similar to the antennas already on the Russian service module.
If you have any way to watch, I am sure it will be exciting for any
 ham to watch.
This is an example of what can be achieved by volunteer hams working
 closely with a space agency.
This antenna project was funded entirely by AMSAT-NA and volunteers
who built the antennas for both the experiment and for ARISS.
That's not to take away from the tremendous contribution from ESA for
the experiment, the launch and the EVA. I have no idea what that cost
but you can be assured it was a lot more than the cost of the antennas.

Once the antennas are in place we will be working to bring amateur
 radio to the Columbus module.

I am very proud of all the teamwork and effort that has gone into this
 project.
