[amsat-bb] Manual Tracking XW-1

2009-12-17 Thread Robert Bruninga
XW-1's orbit is quite easy for manual tracking, though not quite
as easy as it is for AO-51 ECHO or GO32...

Just remember these facts:
* XW-1's orbits come over 17 minutes earlier each day.
* There is a pass 109 minutes earlier and/or later
* Once a week (6 days) add about an hour and a half (basically
109 - 17)
* The pattern repeats every 6 days but 6 minutes later

Basically the exact pass pattern repeats every 6 days, but
unfortunately slips by 6 minutes a week so a permanent repeating
schedule like we use for AO-51 and GO32 for months is not
possible unless you want to add the 6 minutes each week.
See www.aprs.org/MobileLEOtracking.html

This way say you are far from a PC, all you will need to do is
monitor the AX.25 packet downlink for several hours some day
with your APRS mobile. Once you get a packet, then you can
manually derive the rest of the passes for your trip.

(I hope they eventually turn on APRS digipeating on the AX.25
channel for such wilderness travelers..)

[amsat-bb] Re: Doppler.sqf

2009-12-17 Thread Erich Eichmann
Hello Nels,
Alex, VK5ALX, has already replied to your mail and suggested to add the
following entries to Doppler.SQF:

XIWANG-1 (HOPE-1),435790,145910,USB,LSB,REV,0,0,CWbcn
XIWANG-1 (HOPE-1),435740,145950,USB,LSB,REV,0,0,Xponder
XIWANG-1 (HOPE-1),435675,145825,FM,FM,NOR,0,0,Rptr-BBS

Alan, WA4SCA, suggested the same entries some days ago, but used the
satellite name XW-1.
Also, Alan mentioned that you need to add an entry to SubTone.SQF.

It is most important that the spelling of the satellite name in Doppler.SQF
and in SubTone.SQF exactly matches the spelling in the Keps file.

So (if you use the entries above ) your Keps file could contain the
following data set (the data seem to be precise):

XIWANG-1 (HOPE-1)
1 36122U 09072B 09350.14452292 -.0045 0-0 0+0 077
2 36122 100.4974 047.2295 0007562 040.0327 320.1583 13.16283842 130

When you insert that set (with copy and paste) into an existing Keps file
make sure that the length of the lines #1 and #2 is equal with these lines
in the other data sets and that the position of the parameters is exactly
the same as in the other sets. Include spaces if necessary. Use fonts with
equal width for all letters anf figures.

The entry in SubTone.SQF with that satellite name should be:
XIWANG-1 (HOPE-1),67.0,$3F,1

If you want to use the name XW-1 change the name in all entries.

[amsat-bb] Re: Doppler.sqf

2009-12-17 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Nels,

I have found that the SATPC32 function which allows you to assign a name to
an object number is very helpful at times like this when a new satellite is
being commissioned. It seems they are always changing the name in the keps.
I have added the following line to the AMSATNAMES.TXT file:

36122 09072B XW-1

You can access it through the Auxiliary Files function. This has the
advantage that you can define the Doppler, PL Tones, etc using XW-1 and they
will be recognized no matter what the common name is in the keps. Also, if
we find that a different object is a better fit, you only need to change
this one line. They have already requested an Oscar designation, so once
that is done, you can replace XW-1 with the new number if you wish.

Data/SatPC32/Keplar/amateur.txt Edit this file and add the XW-1 keps

 XW-1
 1 36121U 09072A 09349.53641119 -.0045 0-0 0+0 31
 2 36121 100.5050 046.6267 0007989 035.4736 324.6735 13.16391085 50

Restart your computer and files should appear.

One possible source of confusion is due to the fact that amateur.txt
is not the only possible source of keplerian elements. If you call up
the window that appears with the 'Satelites' menu, on the far left you
will see a list of files in the SatPC32/Kepler directory. Clicking on
any one of these will generate a list of satellites whose orbits are
defined in that file, and from there you can select a subgroup to be
displayed in the main program. As a result, if you edit the
'amateur.txt' file, be sure that this is the file you have selected
under the 'Satellites' window as well. Also note that when you update
the keps from the web, you'll clobber the file that you edited by
hand.

This info was sent to me yesterday and is right on as of today's passes. You
can also use Hope-1 as the name of the satellite..

Subject: [amsat-bb] Help for an old timer

Hi Everybody,

After a 15 year hiatus from being an active satellite operator, I am in the
process of pulling my satellite ground station together to operate the
various LEO birds that are available to us today. While almost all of the
equipment I have is new, I have one vintage item that I would like to put to
use in my shack but I am going to need some help. While I was working at
SSTL back in the early 90s, I purchased two of the JAMSAT TrakBox kits
developed by JA6FTL, JG6MCG, SM0TER et al from AMSAT-UK. As I understand it
the kit was made available by TAPR here in the states for a while as well. I
built one kit up at the time and sent it to my Dad, KB5ZPK (SK) for him to
use in his newly acquired store-and-forward ground station here in Texas.
Since I was operating from the Command Center at the University of Surrey, I
put the other one aside for use at a later time. Well, the later time turned
out to be now and of course since that time the world has dealt with Y2K and
all of the associated software upgrades and changes that had to be done. It
miraculously appears that I haven't lost any of the components for the kit
so from a hardware standpoint I think I am set but I am concerned about the
availability of post Y2K software to run in the system. So my question is,
can anyone tell me if there is any post Y2K software available for the
Trakbox and if so, how can I go about getting a copy of it? While I realize
there are now other options available for autotracking, for sentimental
reasons I would like to get my kit up and running so any help that I can get
would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to working many of you on the birds once I become QRV.

Thanks for reading my note.

[amsat-bb] Tutorial to configure XW-1 in SatPC32

2009-12-17 Thread Wayne Estes
Here's my attempt at a step by step tutorial to manually configure XW-1
in SatPC32.

1. ADD XW-1 KEPLERIAN ELEMENTS

Note: XW-1 Keps are in the 17 December nasa.all Keps from AMSAT. If you
use this file, update Keps and skip to step 2 below. If you use a
different Keps file use the following steps to manually add XW-1 to your
Keps file:

A. Ensure that Windows Explorer shows hidden files: Open Windows
Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - View. Select the circle that
says Show hidden files and folders.

B. Make note of which source file is highlighted in the left side of
the SatPC32 Satellites menu box. This is the Keps file used by SatPC32.

C. Open that Keps file with a text editor such as Wordpad. The file is
located here:
C://Documents and Settings\[your name]\Application
Data\SatPC32\Kepler\[source file]

D. Paste the latest XW-1 Keplerian elements into the file you opened.
The Keplerian elements should be 3 lines and should look like this:
(this example is NOT necessarily the latest version)

XW-1
1 36121U 09072A 09349.53641119 -.0045 0-0 0+0 031
2 36121 100.5050 046.6267 0007989 035.4736 324.6735 13.1639108550

E. Save the modified source file.

F. Restart SatPC32.

Note: Any Keps that you manually add to your Keps file MIGHT disappear
if you subsequently do an update Keps.

2. ASSIGN XW-1 TO A LETTER BUTTON.

A. Go into the Satellites menu box. You should see XW-1 in the list
of available satellites.

B. Double-click on XW-1, then click OK. XW-1 will now be assigned
to the next available letter in the lower right corner of the main
SatPC32 window.

C. Click that letter and verify that you see XW-1's name in the blue
title bar and its footprint on the world map.

3. ADD XW-1 DOPPLER TUNING DATA

A. In the main SatPC32 window, click ? - Auxiliary Files -
Doppler.SQF. The Doppler.SQF text file will open in Wordpad.

B. Paste the following text into the Doppler.SQF file and save it.

XW-1,435789,145910,USB,LSB,REV,0,0,CWbcn
XW-1,435740,145950,USB,LSB,REV,0,0,Xponder
XW-1,435675,145825,FM,FM,NOR,0,0,Rptr-BBS

C. Restart SatPC32 and select the XW-1 satellite.

D. Open the CAT menu screen and verify that you see the 3 frequency
pairs listed.

4. ADD XW-1 SUBAUDIBLE TONE DATA

a. In the main SatPC32 window, click ? - Auxiliary Files -
Subtone.SQF. The Subtone.SQF text file will open in Wordpad.

b. Paste the following line into the file and save it.

XW-1,67.0,$3F,1

This setting is difficult to verify. After restarting the program and
selecting the XW-1 satellite, you should be able to enable the 67 Hz
subaudible tone: Enable CAT, click the T button until it displays T1.

5. ASSIGN THE NAME XW-1 TO ITS OBJECT NUMBERS.

This is only necessary if you get Keplerian elements from Space-Track.
It's not necessary if you use the nasa.all Keps file from AMSAT.

a. In the main SatPC32 window, click ? - Auxiliary Files -
AmsatNames.SQF. The AmsatNames.SQF text file will open in Wordpad.

b. Paste the following line into the file and save it.

36122 09072B XW-1

c. Restart SatPC32.

You will need to tweak these settings after the official name is
assigned to XW-1. Possibly CO-68.
