Some of the internet time syncing tools recommended are not compliant
with Win 7 64-bit O/S. I will not be chasing those further and hope to
edit the time sync service that already exists in Win 7.

Hi Larry,

Time synchronization is scheduled in the 'Task Manager' of Win 7.
Open 'Task Manager' and look for the item and edit it. Thanks for
bringing this to my attention as I just upgraded (?) to Win 7. I set
mine to sync at startup as I turn the PC off at night. My tracking
software (Nova) also does it when it is started. Also updates Keps.

2010-05-08 Thread w4upd
I use one of the following located at my site.:

   ftp://bristor-assoc.com/pub/Amateur/atmtm22.exe

   ftp://bristor-assoc.com/pub/Amateur/atomic-clock.exe

The first one allows multiple syncs during the day. The second once a
day. You can Google
the names and probably get newer versions, but have found these to work
well and have them on all of my systems.

After being burned with the Alinco last year, I will hold off on ordering

[amsat-bb] Re: L and S-band Options

2010-05-08 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Guy,

Mode-L is not authorized for transmission FROM a spacecraft, only TO one.
So you only need TX capability. Of course the rigs you mentioned will give
you the needed TX capability. A cheaper way would be to find a used
transverter. Note that unless it was designed for satellite use, it will
probably need new crystals and tuning. In principle an HT which covers
mode-L, combined with an amp and good antenna, would work for an uplink.
However, the Doppler shift is so large, and changes so rapidly, that you
need computer control. It CAN be done without that, but it is painful for
you, and more painful for the people you might work.

A helical antenna, easily made and uncritical, can be made for either mode-L
or mode-S for a few dollars. Likewise, there are still a few of the old MDS
converters around. AO-51 has a very loud downlink, and can even be heard on
a simple patch antenna without a dish, or a short Yagi.

Thanks for reading this message. I know there has been a lot of information
on the BB over the past couple of years about operating L and S band on
AO-51; however, I was focused on V/U at the time and I didn't make notes of
the information. Now I would like to experiment with these two bands and I
am looking for some recommendations to get started. Is the Alinco DJ-G7T a
viable option for receiving the AO-51 L-band downlink (Pricey at $320.00 but
it does cover 3 satellite bands with advertised full-duplex capability)? If
not (and ruling out the more expensive (and effectively non-portable)
transceivers.. TS-2000 / IC-910H, etc.), what would be the least expensive
way to have receive capability on 1.2 Ghz... a down-converter perhaps? (I
currently have a Yaesu FT-60R dual band HT and a Yaesu FT-817D along with
the Arrow and ELK antennas for V/U) Also, what are some options for
homebrew 1.2 Ghz antennas (I do not have sophisticated test equipment and my
"Skills" are minimal)? On to 2.4 Ghz what are some options for
inexpensive 2.4 Ghz down-converters (As a reference..I do not consider the
SSB UEK-3000 inexpensive at $500.00) and homebrew antennas? I would like to
be able to experiment with handheld / portable gear in the yard to gain some
experience with these two bands.

[amsat-bb] WD9EWK @ DM32/DM42 today, 2330-0240 UTC

2010-05-08 Thread Patrick STODDARD (WD9EWK/VA7EWK)
Hi!

Since I didn't send anything out yet regarding my trip last
weekend to southeastern Arizona for a hamfest and my stop at
DM52/DM53 (along with a very quick stop at DM51/DM52), thanks
to all who showed up during those passes. I know DM53 is
particularly rare on the birds, and a change in work schedules
let me take last Friday (30 April) off for the drive to that
boundary. The hamfest in Sierra Vista AZ was a good event, and
thanks to all who worked WD9EWK on the 4 passes using 4
different satellites from the hamfest site. QSL cards for last
weekend's activities went to the post office a few days ago,
and should be showing up in mailboxes shortly.

There is a window of approximately 3 hours later this afternoon
where I can work AO-51, SO-50, FO-29, and AO-7 with relatively
short gaps between all of those passes. My plan is to go south
of Phoenix to the DM32/DM42 grid boundary and work passes on
those 4 satellites starting with AO-51 at 2330 UTC and possibly
stay out there through the last AO-7 pass that has LOS around
0240 UTC. I go out there periodically, and a couple of operators
have recently asked me when I would make another trip to DM32.
The northeast corner of DM32 is less than an hour's drive from
Phoenix, so I decided to make the quick trip this afternoon.

Anyone working WD9EWK from the DM32/DM42 grid boundary who would
like a QSL only needs to drop me an e-mail. If you're in the log,
I will get you a card. If I've never worked you before, I would
appreciate receiving your QSL card for the QSO, as this location
is within the area that I can use toward a satellite VUCC
application - if I ever get around to filling out the paperwork
and sorting the cards. :-)

73!

HF/50MHz All-Mode Transceiver - TS-590S (tentative naming)

Featuring a 32-bit floating-point DSP, the TS-590S will offer advanced receiver
performance and an extensive range of
features that make it ideal for beginner and seasoned DX’er alike. The radio’s
exceptional ease of operation, true to
the Kenwood tradition, will be especially welcome for contest and mobile
applications.

144/430MHz Dual Band FM Portable - TH-D72 (tentative naming)

The APRS® capability found on Kenwood’s TH-D7* and TM-D710 has been upgraded
for the TH-D72. Thanks also to the internal
GPS unit, APRS operations will be more enjoyable than ever. The TH-D72 also
offers EchoLink® memory compatibility and a
mini-USB connector for enhanced computer connectivity. This transceiver is sure
to make ham radio operations easier and
more fun for all.

[amsat-bb] New Kenwood D-72

2010-05-08 Thread Andrew Glasbrenner
I spotted this on QRZ this morning...details are skimpy now though. I wonder if
it'll be full duplex? The D7 has a really good full duplex implementation.
