>> ... Well ok, then what is the answer? I live in the most populous region of the US' most populous state. I mention that because if any region on the planet has the potential for on-the-air abuse and mis-use, then this is it. I can count on one hand the number of times I have NOT been able to make a contact on a pass of AO-51 the past few few years. In front of audience after audience - over fifty demos the past couple of years - plus personal contacts. Are there examples of "poor" ops? Absolutely. But I see those as opportunities to educate. Many an email has been sent to a newbie I have heard on the air. But NEVER to degrade or chide - but to educate. I only casually listened to the pass that caused this thread and change of uplink frequency. I guess I will re-listen, without office distractions, and see if I am as "struck" as others were with gross mis-use of the service. >>>*I cannot think of a worse idea.* ** Well ok, then what is the answer? AO-51 used to be fun to work, but with the high power stations, jammers, and everyone talking over everyone else, it's no longer fun. With the frequency change this evenings pass was very enjoyable. [amsat-bb] ND9M/MM Op Sked: FL04 Update
The Gulf Stream is pushing us a bit faster now. We'll be crossing into FL04 sooner than expected, around 28/2250Z. The upcoming AO7 pass that starts locally at 28/2248Z looks to be the only available window for this grid before we exit into FL05 about an hour later. 73, Jim, ND9M / VQ9JC ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] ND9M/MM Op Sked: 28 March - Update
We've got one more full day of sailing before we arrive in Jacksonville, but there are a few good grids in the FL field still left. My op sked for tonight and tomorrow is below. I fully expect to get on while we're in FL07, but we'll be in that grid during the work day so I don't know what pass(es) that'll be. We'll be in FL04 for only an hour or so tonight as we turn north near where the Florida Keys meet the mainland. Fortunately there are a couple passes (VO52 and SO67) that occur as we enter and depart the grid, so I should be able to put FL04 into a few logs at least. [amsat-bb] Re: AO-51 uplink
(flameproof suit ON) (soapbox mode ON) While we're on the subject of FM satellite operating etiquette... Field Day isn't far off, and perhaps it's not too early to start reminding people that the "one contact per FM satellite" rule means just that: ONE contact. Not "only one LOGGED contact"... ONE. CONTACT. PERIOD. The rule was intended to provide more opportunities for stations to make a FD contact by getting those who had already made one OFF the birds to make room for someone else. The big guns who camp out on the FM sats "handing out" contacts ("but I only logged one...") fail to realize that every contact they give out deprives another station of THEIR opportunity to make a contact. Two NEW stations could have made contact for every ONE contact "handed out" by the big gun. To put it another way, there are only so many QSO "slots" available per pass, and you're using someone else's slot. (soapbox mode OFF) George, KA3HSW ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. >> ... Maybe that's the answer, changing the uplink frequency at random and >> posting that change here ... I cannot think of a worse idea. The "best available information" should ALWAYS be on the Control Ops pages - the only pages that are maintained by those who are in control of the satellites. Start eliminating operations by posting changes only here ... or some other private or semi-private clique ... and you undermine what the FM satellites are supposed to be all about. [amsat-bb] Re: SO-67 questions
Hi Dave, I think you got the answers from the other respondents - but I would like to add a few remarks: 1. The most important in my humble opinion - do not use the CTCSS tone. In my experience it breaks through on the downlink. That does not sound very good. 2. Use normal FM - not FM narrow - but adjust the mike gain so that your downlink audio sounds good. 3. Do not use high power (EIRP). It can give "funny" effects now and then. 4. I use 435.340 MHz for the downlink - but nominal frequency may be OK for you. Enjoy the 2 weeks of SO-67 active over the Americas. It has a LARGE downlink signal :-) 73 OZ1MY/Ib -Oprindelig meddelelse- Fra: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] På vegne af Dave Straube Sendt: 28. marts 2011 18:53 Til: AMSAT-BB@amsat.org Emne: [amsat-bb] SO-67 questions Is SO-67 operating on the published frequencies (145.870/435.345) or does one of up/down need an adjustment? Dave, Look above the AF/RF gain knob. To the left of the FM/AM button. The one that says NAR. If you use a program such as SATPC32, use FMN rather than FM for the mode. Hope this helps.
