[amsat-bb] Yuri's Night - THANK YOU

2011-04-13 Thread Clint Bradford
Just finished breaking down the a/v equipment, my wife is loading the
dishwasher, and we are pleasantly
coming down off a great high.

Many friends celebrated this date with us in our back yard, along with our
Icelandic horse and burro. (The
burro's name is Edward R. Burro. If you are laughing, you are either a student
of journalism, or more than
80 years of age ... (grin).)

No, the ARISSat-1 was not heard on a great pass of the ISS at 9:56PM PDT.

THANK YOU to the folks who called in via Skype! THAT was great for the party
atmosphere! We got our
live video feed shown to the planet, too! We showed the new First Orbit movie,
along with other new and
old videos.

It's been a historic 48 hours. I hope we can get the scheduling together to
perform whatever maintenance
needs to be done to our ARISSat-1, and have it successfully deployed soon.

Clint (now going to bed) Bradford, K6LCS

Kind of looks like ARISSat-1 was a no-show for this event. Now I
have to decide whether to stay up for the April 13, 0808utc pass
(midnight local) or give it up. I wonder when someone is going to
tell us anything about it. So far its rumor and innuendo. Nothing official.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 battery.

2011-04-13 Thread G0MRF

Hi Nitin / Vince.

Although the non appearance of ARISSat-1 has been a little disappointing,
in the overall scheme of things we are still looking at a major AMSAT
achievement here. There is after all a satellite awaiting 'launch' on the ISS.
We know it's a success because so many people have named it and want it to be
identified as belonging to them. We even have some working telemetry
decoding software 3 months ahead of launch. - Yipee.

I'm really not sure what all the confusion over the last few days tells
us. Prepared press releases full of mistakes, a complete lack of preperation
following the long period of testing which left the battery delpleted. No
plan B to charge it during the sleep period - One wonders if the switches
were even returned to the correct positions when it was last turned off.

Despite a turbulent last few days, the main event is yet to come and as
long as the designers have anticipated it being deployed with a completely
flat battery, then we can all sit back and wait for July more prepared from
this rehearsal than we would have been.

You'll notice that when you visit Space-Track, it now uses https. They

My install of NLSA Nova (version 2.2.0.48) can no longer download from

I am so excited right now that I can barely type because I'm dancing a jig.

AO-51 was working fine for the 2158Z, 4-13-2011 pass over my QTH (EM95md)

which I made my FIRST successful satellite QSO ever with K8YSE. Thank You
K8YSE!!

My apologies to K8YSE for getting a bit tongue-tied but I was so excited to
hear
him repeat my call sign back and ask for the QSL that I about swallowed the
microphone :-)
What makes it even better was the fact that I make it a point of recording the
passes so I have an audio recording of my first AO-51 QSO.

A big thanks to K6LCS (Clint) and his web

inspiration to give satellites a try.

Subject: [amsat-bb] AO-51 is Working Fine - My First Satellite QSO Ever!

I am so excited right now that I can barely type because I'm dancing a jig.

AO-51 was working fine for the 2158Z, 4-13-2011 pass over my QTH (EM95md)
during
which I made my FIRST successful satellite QSO ever with K8YSE. Thank You
K8YSE!!

My apologies to K8YSE for getting a bit tongue-tied but I was so excited to
hear
him repeat my call sign back and ask for the QSL that I about swallowed the
microphone :-)
What makes it even better was the fact that I make it a point of recording
the
passes so I have an audio recording of my first AO-51 QSO.

A big thanks to K6LCS (Clint) and his web
site http://web.me.com/clintbradford/k6lcs/Home.html for all the tips and
inspiration to give satellites a try.

WooHoo!!

Steve,

People like you are the reason that Drew KO4MA and I dropped what we were
doing/ran home from work early today to turn AO-51 back on.

Happy to hear about your first QSO! Congrats.

Hope to catch you in the log.

Space-Track now requires secure HTTP (SSL) connections to download TLEs.
You'll notice that when you visit Space-Track, it now uses https. They
have been advertising this change for several weeks and have finally
switched over.

My install of NLSA Nova (version 2.2.0.48) can no longer download from

I'd recommend either downloading from Celestrak, or using a tool that
can download from Space-Track:

[amsat-bb] First Contact

2011-04-13 Thread Clint Bradford
... I am so excited right now that I can barely type because I'm dancing a
 jig.

Uh, dude, you've caught it ... and it is quite contagious ... with few known
cures:

Satellite-itis.

I've tred everything to cure myself of this. Modern meds - legal and, er,
otherwise. Pina Coladas. Using VistaPrint to make AMSAT banners and
informational post cards. Staying up for 48 hours preparing for a party and
trying to work ARISSat-1 ... NOTHING has cured me of this malady.

Every once in a while, my wife will hear me exclaim from the back yard, I just
talked to Vancouver! I am sure she thinks I am nuts, and wonders why I just
don't use the cell phone ...

 ... recording the passes ...

What is your setup? A direct connection to your audio, or a smartphone voice
recorder app, or ??? ?

so I have an audio recording of my first AO-51 QSO.

... A big thanks to K6LCS (Clint) and his web site ... for all the tips and
inspiration to give satellites a try.

I am to old to get this affected ... thanks!

2011-04-13 Thread Zachary Beougher
Hi Omar,

Here is a post from K8YSE from about a 3 weeks ago:

**
Yuri, UT1FG/MM, is currently reviewing a draft of a
proposed qsl procedure for his maritime mobile operation
on satellites. As soon as he finalizes the procedure, it
will be posted here on the -bb. Please hold off on sending
for cards.

Yuri is currently at anchor in FN58 awaiting dock space to unload
their cargo. He will likely leave the ship shortly and return home
for a well deserved vacation. He has certainly gone all out to
work the birds in hundreds of wet grids. Thanks Yuri!

Hi Nitin / Vince.

Although the non appearance of ARISSat-1 has been a little disappointing,
in the overall scheme of things we are still looking at a major AMSAT
achievement here. There is after all a satellite awaiting 'launch' on the
ISS.
We know it's a success because so many people have named it and want it to
be
identified as belonging to them. We even have some working telemetry
decoding software 3 months ahead of launch. - Yipee.

I'm really not sure what all the confusion over the last few days tells
us. Prepared press releases full of mistakes, a complete lack of
preperation
following the long period of testing which left the battery delpleted. No
plan B to charge it during the sleep period - One wonders if the switches
were even returned to the correct positions when it was last turned off.

Despite a turbulent last few days, the main event is yet to come and as
long as the designers have anticipated it being deployed with a completely
flat battery, then we can all sit back and wait for July more prepared from
this rehearsal than we would have been.

Afterwards, Dmitri performed hardware deactivation close-out
activities on the TEKh-43 Radioskaf-B Kedr test microsatellite in the
MRM2 Poisk module which had been connected to an 825M3 Orlan battery and
operated its 430 MHz transmitter yesterday.
