[amsat-bb] Re: ARISSat-1 Not Heard

2011-08-20 Thread g0mrf

 Hello Nader.

I heard the sat go into eclipse over Europe earlier in the evening. It appeared
to shut down immediately it passed into darkness. The battery does not appear
to have any capacity left.
Perhaps all AMSAT spacecraft should be designed to operate on solar panels
alone after the battey fails. We are very lucky with ARISSat-1, not so
fortunate with AO-40

Regards

David

[amsat-bb] Fwd: ARISSAT heard on FUNcube Dongle - I/Q wav file read with iSDR on iPad

2011-08-20 Thread Bernard Pidouxx

 Hello,

 Last night Aug 19, I captured ARISSAT VHF transmission using FCD and Audacity
 audio software to save I/Q wide band signal on my Mandriva Linux system.
 I monitored the signals using quisk. Doppler shift was not too fast at the
 end of a nearly overhead pass in Paris.
 For this first attempt I could note manage to listen ARISSAT and save the
 signal simultaneously.
 At the end of the pass, ARISSAT was very week but I decided to record the FCD
 output blindly.
 I saved stereo .wav file with 44100 samples per seconds for compatibility
 with iPad iSDR application. I could then play back recorded file with iSDR.
 Despite the faint signals Waterfall display showed clearly CW and BPSK
 beacons and fine tuning the listening frequency through the touch screen
 sensitivity of the iPad application let me decode parts of CW beacon with
 iSDR 200 Hz filter.

 I will upload soon recorded wav file and screen capture of waterfall on my
 site.

[amsat-bb] Re: ARISSat telemetry and Doppler tuning

2011-08-20 Thread Ronald G. Parsons
One thing I've discovered which makes things go more smoothly is to reduce
the minimum Doppler tuning interval.

I am using SatPC32 V12.8a. There are two parameters in the CAT menu -- the
Speed which I changed to 5x (which is not sticky) and the minimum Doppler
tuning step for SSB which I set to zero (it will be sticky if you remember
to click Store).

With these two changes, although the Doppler correction may drift off, it
does so very smoothly, which I assume allows the decoding of the BPSK data
to be more accurate.

[amsat-bb] FUNcube received ARISSAT stereo I/Q recording for SDR

2011-08-20 Thread Bernard f6bvp

Hello,

This was a proof of concept i.e. recording under Linux with Audacity,
ARISSAT signal received with an FUNcube dongle.

Signals were weak for the record was performed at the end of the night pass.
wav file can be transferred on an iPad an then read with the very nice
application iSDR.

I will try to do a better recording next time.
The 14MB file can be downloaded from :

[amsat-bb] HamSpeak - SatSpeak

2011-08-20 Thread Thomas Doyle
QST adds a Hamspeak sidebar to articles to explain some of the jargon in the
article. I feel the need for a SatSpeak sidebar. Today I heard a station
working an FM pileup giving his grid location as The Lighthouse. I thought
I understood the grid system but The Lighthouse is a new one for me.
Perhaps it is another mystery word.

[amsat-bb] 2 to 10 meter converter

2011-08-20 Thread Richard Lawn
I've been making an effort to downsize a bit a found an old treasure, or it
might be to someone. It is a downconverter made by parks electronics
laboratory in Beaverton, or. Its labeled as Model 144-1 two meter converter.
144 = 28mhz and 145=29mhz. Has a self contained power supply. It is quite
well made and last time I fired it up it worked. Any body want it? I could
send a picture so email me off list.

[amsat-bb] Re: Turn off AGC when receiving BPSK-1000

On 8/19/11 7:51 AM, Gregg Wonderly wrote:

 What kind of digital are you suggesting? Voice and data both? A
 digital path from anywhere on the planet to the appropriate ground
 station is easily doable with some documentation of the ground stations.

Digital voice would be the easiest to support since the data rate is so
modest. Low rate data ( 100 kb/s) wouldn't be much harder. All it takes
is a stabilized platform with microwave antennas. Any ground station
with an Internet connection could automatically link with the ISS and
relay it to a central point (e.g., Houston) and then hand it off to the
next ground station. One advantage we hams have always had over NASA
itself are our numbers and geographical distribution. We obviously
wouldn't be able to cover the large parts of the earth that are entirely
water but we could still do a pretty good job with the rest.

The Symposium committee is pleased to announce that Lance Ginner, K6GSJ has
agreed to be our banquet speaker. 2011 is the 50th anniversary of the first
amateur satellite in space (OSCAR 1) and Lance was part of the team that
developed that satellite.

We are also pleased to announce that Alan Bowker,
WA6DNR has volunteered to take

over the reins for the 2011 AMSAT Symposium in San Jose, CA. Alan was kind
enough to step in for Herb Sullivan, K6QXB who had to resign this week for
personal reasons.

The Symposium and Annual Meeting will be held Nov 4-6 at the Wyndham San Jose
Hotel adjacent to the San Jose airport. See the AMSAT Web site for details,
reservation form and additional information.

AMSAT Fox to Become Fox-1 and Fox-2

AMSAT News Service Bulletin 233.02
 From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
August 21, 2011
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-233.02

The AMSAT Fox CubeSat project is being split into a complementary
pair of new CubeSats named Fox-1 and Fox-2.

Fox-1 will address the need to quickly develop and launch a replace-
ment for the ailing AO-51. Fox-1 will include an FM transponder pair-
ed with a simple IHU for telemetry and control and fitted to a basic
CubeSat space frame. This small and highly focused set of capabilities
will significantly reduce the time needed for satellite development
and construction allowing for a launch target in the second half of
2013.

The advanced technology, research and development work, started for
the original Fox satellite, will be continued and rolled into Fox-2
including the software defined transponder. With Fox-1 addressing
the immediate need for an AO-51 replacement, Fox-2 will instead be
designed for a linear transponder mission. A linear transponder
requires considerably more power so Fox-2 will also include
an advanced power system and a cutting-edge space frame with deploy-
able solar panels. Fox-2 will have a launch target in the 2015 time
frame.

There are still opportunities for developers interested in working
on these satellites especially in the areas of project management,
systems engineering, thermal and mechanical design, CNC machining,
circuit design, software development, system test and test equipment
development.

If interested, please send email to Tony Monteiro, aa...@amsat.org

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 Voice Telemetry 02:01z 8/21/2011 CM98

2011-08-20 Thread Greg D.

Wow, a nearly overhead pass, apparently mostly in high power mode (a first here
at KO6TH)

02:01z 8/21/2011 as received in CM98

Voice announcement (possibly Chinese or similar)

Telemetry:

MET = 45 min
IHU Temp = +33c
Control panel temp = +21c
Battery = 35.70v
Current = ?? (QSB)

Voice announcement (English)
Canned SSTV picture
More voice (Spanish, I believe)

02:04 telemetry
MET = 47
IHU Temp = +34c
Control panel temp = +22c
Battery = 35.85v
Current = -12ma

more voice (Spanish, reference to Puerto Rico?)

Live SSTV

More Spanish

Telemetry
MET = 49
IHU temp = +34c
Control panel temp = +22c
Battery = 35.78v
Current = -20ma

English announcement

Voice (Chinese?)

Live SSTV picture

English announcement

Telemetry
MET = 51
IHU temp = +35c
Control panel temp = +23c
Battery = 35.90v
Current = -20ma

At this point the satellite turned off for the first time during the pass.

Then LOS.

Great pass, but why did it turn off?

[amsat-bb] I heard it! (Was frustrated!)

2011-08-20 Thread Burns Fisher
Thanks to everyone for the encouragement. Tonight for the 7PM pass of
ARISSat I went up on a hill where I had a good view of the horizon, taking
my F6a and a slightly-better-than-stock ducky. I actually heard the bird!
 Not strongly, and (surprisingly) not until it was way down on the horizon
toward the end of the pass. I thought I heard a carrier on and off but
slightly before LOS, I hear a tone, followed by a woman speaking telemetry
values. I could actually understand it mostly even though it was pretty
much down in the noise. Interestingly, holding the antenna VERTICALLY gave
the best results.

Since I heard a woman, I guess that means it is reading the SD card
again...or is that just for the messages?

I'm wondering whether the direct-overhead time that I heard nothing the
bird's antenna was actually pointing away. Has anyone had any estimates of
how fast it is tumbling now?

Anyway, I know now that my radio can do it. Next I have to mange to get a
better signal to it.

Thanks again!
