[amsat-bb] 9600baud digital satellites
Gentlemen, Most of the current cube sats and those to follow in the future all use data communications for transmitting telementry back to earth. In order to receive this data a ground station requires a TNC of some sort that can work up to 9600 baud. To those of you who are already using this type of equipment, how are you doing i,t what equipment are you using? David David G. [amsat-bb] Need some ears to listen for VO-52, Northern EU, Canada, USA...
Hi AMSATs, I received the news that VO-52 will be switched on in a couple of hours from now, at 13:50UTC, (03-March-2012) Unfortunately the satellite will not pass over central Europe, and I am not able to check the status the first two orbits. I am looking for hams in Russia, Northern Europe, Canada, USA, or others that can listen for VO-52 right after it is turned on. ! ! ! Please don't use high uplink powers !!! (We don't want it to rise temperature very fast just after cold switch on) ! ! ! Please listen for the CW beacon at 145.860, which is a good reference. (Audio records and reports are very welcome at ISRO and myself) 73 de PE1RAH, William Leijenaar --- ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] VO-52 PE1RAH Trxp Switching 'ON'
Dear VO-52 (HAMSAT) users, Subsequent to the clearance by the 'Expert committee' the Transponder # 2 (The Dutch Transponder made by William Leijenaar PE1RAH) on board HAMSAT V0-52 would be switched 'ON' at 13:42 UT on 13.03.2012 during orbit # 37080 over India. A 'Critical Comparative Signal Report' between the Indian and Dutch transponder would be of great help for further evaluations and necessary actions for the maintenance the transponder in good and healthy condition for better services and also, the inputs would be very valuable to the respective transponder designers. We all hope, Williams PE1RAH would be very happy with our decision and behalf of every one here in India involved with project, wish Williams and his transponder, once again all the very best and good luck. Nick, Did you happen to use the backup utility that comes with SatPC32? That has saved me a number of times. I try to run it every couple of weeks, when things are running smoothly. Then, it's a restore from the same utility, to get things back to normal. [amsat-bb] Re: 9600baud digital satellites
Dave, There are a lot of TNCs around which will do 9600. I have a DSP-2232 which I used until recently. These days many are moving to using sound cards and software, such as MixW and the AGW Packet Engine. Whatever approach you take, remember that you need to use the rig connections for 9600 baud, rather than the usual ones for 300/1200 baud. [amsat-bb] G5500 Azimuth Rotator Update
Hi Everyone, Here's a quick update on my G5500 Azimuth rotator story. (Recall that three weeks ago I stalled the rotator after switching antennas.) Yaesu Parts USA is still backordered on the replacement motors, possibly some will arrive from Japan in a few more weeks (or possibly not). The company that I sent the motor to in LA (Eurton Electric) just gave me a quote today for the rewinding cost: $365. That's close to $3X what the motors go for new (if you can find one!), so at least with them it's not cost-effective to repair the motor. I'm having the motor shipped back, and I'll either try to rewind it myself, maybe someone else who can rewind it, or buy a replacement sometime in the future. To get the antennas back on the air, I decided last week that it would be good to have a spare -- so I ended up purchasing a replacement G5500 system and installing the azimuth rotator this last weekend. Everything's working great so far! I also added a thermal cut-out switch to the motor to prevent a similar stall-induced-motor-burnout in the future. If anyone is interested in how I installed the switch (or what a G5500 azimuth rotator looks like inside), I've added pictures to my blog at: http://kb5wia.blogspot.com/2012/03/az-el-antenna-system-new-70cm-yagi-and.html 73! [amsat-bb] Re: G5500 Azimuth Rotator Update
Hi Dave, How long does one have to stall the motor before the windings' insulation starts to degrade? I seem to recall it's not very long (less than minutes). With all that thermal mass, and the insulation from the heat shrink tubing, is the thermal switch really going to be effective mounted that way? I would have thought it needed to be buried in the windings themselves somehow (though I can't imagine getting good thermal contact there either). Great pictures, by the way. [amsat-bb] Re: G5500 Azimuth Rotator Update
Hi Greg KO6TH and Dave KB5WIA I have always seen the thermal switches buried into the windings themselves both for transformers and motors. To prevent short circuits between turns of the windwing is better to use # 24 fiber glass copper insulated wire for class H insulation of motors or transformers wich windstand constantly very high temperature around 180° C, Celsius i.e. 356 ° Fahrenheit. I have used the above wire with success in critical thermal applications to industrially rewind DC and AC motors working close to lead melting fornaces in a steel plant in Italy. 73 de i8CVS Domenico - Original Message - From: Greg D ko6th.g...@gmail.com To: David Palmer KB5WIA kb5...@amsat.org Cc: amsat-bb@amsat.org Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2012 3:41 AM Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: G5500 Azimuth Rotator Update Hi Dave, How long does one have to stall the motor before the windings' insulation starts to degrade? I seem to recall it's not very long (less than minutes). With all that thermal mass, and the insulation from the heat shrink tubing, is the thermal switch really going to be effective mounted that way? I would have thought it needed to be buried in the windings themselves somehow (though I can't imagine getting good thermal contact there either). Great pictures, by the way. Greg KO6TH David Palmer KB5WIA wrote: Hi Everyone, Here's a quick update on my G5500 Azimuth rotator story. If anyone is interested in how I installed the switch (or what a G5500 azimuth rotator looks like inside), I've added pictures to my blog at: http://kb5wia.blogspot.com/2012/03/az-el-antenna-system-new-70cm-yagi-and.ht ml 73! [amsat-bb] Re: G5500 Azimuth Rotator Update
Hi Greg, Hey, thanks! Good question about how long it takes the windings to degrade. Haven't tested this myself, but I'd seen a post a while back where someone measured current draw on the motor, and found that it's actually almost the same between normal operation and a full stall. That also could be the reason why the 1-Amp fuse I installed in the controller (which was barely enough to run the motors without blowing - a 0.75-Amp fuse I tried blew) never blew throughout my motor stall. So with similar current and voltage in a stall as compared to normal use, that should mean the power consumed (and heat generated) would be similar whether the motor is running or stalled. When I was bench testing the rotator, after maybe 5 full trips to 450 degrees and back (perhaps 10-15 minutes of continuous motor operation) the thermal switch rated at 75C tripped open. So that means the switch is sensing the motor heat, and that it seems in normal operation the motor can go from ambient to 75C (or more) in 10+ minutes. Hard to tell what the failure temp of the enamel wire in that motor is, but let's guess 120 degrees to be conservative. That would give a very rough ballpark of 20 mins stall (or 20mins continuous back-and-forth with no stops) to raise the temp by 100C to cook the motor. You're right about thermal mass and winding temps -- certainly the windings will be hotter than the motor chassis. Will cutting power to the motor when the chassis gets to 75C protect it? Don't know for certain, but after my last experience, I'm adding this insurance, since it's better than no protection! :-) (doesn't beat common sense tho -- if I had more of that, I would have checked antenna clearance before letting the computer run the sat array automatically!) 73 de Dave KB5WIA! Hi Domenico and others, Commands were sent during 03:20 UT pass over India. But, unfortunately the commands were not been acknowledged and confirmed by the telemetry. The next opportunity is at 14:00 UT 35 deg ascending pass over Bangalore, India. we are trying our best to restore the services at the earliest with the constrain of having a single command control station for VO-52. we do hope that, we'll be successful in our efforts, very soon. [amsat-bb] Re: UPDATED AMATEUR SATELLITE FREQUENCY COORDINATION REQUEST
Hi Hans, thanks for reminding us the role of IARU for the amateur satellite frequency coordination. However in the most recent years the number of satellite launched by universities in the amateur bands is growing faster and faster. Are all these satellites coordinated by the relevant universities? Do you have a list of satellites already launched with an indication of their compliance with IARU rules and possibly with ITU rules. I do not know if any action is made by IARU, through its national members, with respect to entities which do not fulfil these rules, and the IARU Bandplans as well. It is important for IARU, in my understanding to monitor the situation. 73, Emanuele I0ELE Il 13/03/2012 21.13, Hans ha scritto: Frequency coordination for amateur radio satellites is provided by the IARU through its Satellite Advisor, an official appointed by the IARU Administrative Council, its top policymaking body. The IARU Satellite Advisor is assisted by an Advisory Panel of qualified amateurs from all three IARU Regions. The panel meets regularly via Skype to consider amateur satellite frequency coordination requests for satellites planned for operation on frequencies in the amateur service. The panel members often provide advice and assist satellite builders with the selection of the best possible frequencies to meet the objectives of their mission. The Amateur Satellite Frequency Coordination request form has been updated (Version 27) and is available for download from www.iaru.org/satellite. On the IARU web satellite page there are also available a number of guideline documents which will assist satellite builders, including a document on the ITU requirements for Amateur Radio Satellites. . 73 Hans ZS6AKV Hans van de Groenendaal IARU Satellite Advisor ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org.
