[amsat-bb] AO-07 mode?

2012-07-14 Thread Tom Gentry
Is AO-07 mode hopping or stuck in one mode at the present? On 14 July
2012; at 23:55 UDT, I just had a nice 40 degree high pass and heard
nothing on 145 MHz. Me or the bird?

[amsat-bb] FO29 schedules with AK and NW VE

2012-07-14 Thread Andrew Glasbrenner
Hi all,
I was looking at my grid map today and noticed I only have BO49 and BP40
confirmed in the far NW. I'd love to make a schedule for new grids for me, or
to confirm FL or EL88 for you. Anyone up for FO29 at 1952z on sunday? I can
work to the horizon and a bit below in that direction, especially portable from
a nearby beach on the Gulf. This 8 degree pass covers all of Alaska and NE VE.

AMSAT-UK Monitoring UK Space Agency Reform of the Outer Space Act

A posting on the UK Space Agency Web Site, announced, "Reform of
the Outer Space Act 1986: Consultation". Graham Shirville, G3VZV
commented, "Whilst they only relate to UK legislation, both the
Consultation Document and the Impact Assessment Document cover a
lot of interesting ground, technical, legal and statistical. Well
worth a review in my opinion. These proposals make the Space Act
more 'cubesat friendly'"

Both of these documents can be accessed on the UK Space Agency web:
http://tinyurl.com/UK-Space-Act (www.bis.gov.uk)

The AMSAT-UK web summarizes the scope of the new Consultation:

This is in response to the Government Growth Review published in
March 2011, in which the Government set out its wish to reform the
Outer Space Act 1986 by introducing an upper limit on liability
for UK operators.

The Outer Space Act covers all UK satellites irrespective of size,
from tiny low cost educational CubeSats up to large commercial £500
million satellites.

Aloha all

It appears A0-7 is still in MODE A. If so, I may give CW a try
on the 0200Z pass this afternoon. My key speed is SLOW and reception
is "iffy." Regardless it would be nice to make a contact in MODE A.
I am still at my home QTH and mountains are problematic. The
footprint does make it to western Iowa northward to Minnesota fm my
home QTH. QRS pse, or if in MODE B I will still give it a try.

Worth a try.

Heard you on the FO-29 pass around 17:20 utc today (Saturday). Good signal
on both CW and SSB. I tried calling you on both CW and SSB but no
luck. Thought you might want to know that your are getting into the sat.

It would have been nice to work you. I was using my normal portable
SSB satellite setup - two FT-817NDs, Elk log periodic. Hopefully we
can hook up on FO-29 or some other satellite.

[amsat-bb] Re: aprs via ariss

2012-07-14 Thread Bob Bruninga
The key to success on a busy channel is short packets:

> N3YKF-3>APTT4,ARISS,IS:/131918z2901.30N/08210.41W>288/000/n3ykf
> mobile!/A=000121!wgO!

There are 41 bytes in that packet that are of no value in this application.

1) Remove the path "IS" (is 7 bytes in the actual protocol) and it is not valie
anyway for APRS

2) A time stamp is usually not needed, since APRS is always LIVE, it is valid
the instant it is reecived

3) No need to repeat your call in the packet since it is in the callsign field

4) No need to say "mobile" because you are using ths symbol for a car anyway

5) When going through the iss at 7,000,000 feet high there is not much value in
reporting your altitude as 121 feet.

6) When making a thousand mile contact the PRECISE position data in the !wgO!
format to 6 inches is not needed

7) Use the !DDMM.mmN/DDDMM.mmW>... format without the time stamp.

8) Make sure your TXD is 150 or 200 ms instead of te default.

That should cut your packet timeto HALF or more and double your chance of
success.
