[amsat-bb] AO-7 Mode A

2013-11-07 Thread dnkucij
In the spirit of "Use what you have to begin with!", I have had surprising
success with a simple magmount CB whip cut for 10m. It sits in a corner of the
shack on a large metal serving tray "borrowed" from the XYL. I've worked
stations over in Europe with it.

Nick,

You're so right about "use it or lose it".  I've often called CQ through
entire passes and never made a QSO. After a few of those, I don't
get very excited about trying again.

[amsat-bb] Re: AO-7 Mode A

2013-11-07 Thread R.T.Liddy
John VE7JZ,

Oh yeah, those were fun times on those various Modes. It was funny
sometimes on Mode K when a station on 15M would try responding
directly on 15M instead of via the 10M Uplink! That was a strange
Mode, but I worked several Countries that way that you cannot do
with any Sat or Mode now. The Russians did a great job with those
RS Birds. There were strong signals and fun Modes and simple radios
and simple antennas. Not the case these days.

I remember leaving my XCVR on the 10M Beacon Freq in the Shack
and doing things in another part of the house. When I heard it come on,
I'd go down to the radio and work a half dozen stations per pass. With
simple vertical antennas on 2M & 10M there was no worry about
aiming, tracking, etc. You just got on and worked what you heard.

[amsat-bb] AMSAT-NA office delays

2013-11-07 Thread Alan
As has been posted, our office manager Martha had a leg injury which limits her
mobility.
Unfortunately there have been issues in the building in which our office is
housed, including basic
power and elevator failures. The combination has caused significant delays in
store order fulfillment
and returned calls and email. The building management reports that the power
and other issues should
be resolved soon. We regret the perfect storm, and appreciate your patience
and understanding.
