Would like to try again tonight at 0301z, but I am portable/handheld

Haven't worked this satellite for a while and whilst I know the bird is very

Hello,

I live in Stoke-on-Trent, UK.
Any body close to me who can help me set up for satellite operations.
Or even decide if it is worth doing in the UK ?

I have a great shack, a number of VHF/UHF & HF rigs, a mast - deciding if I
should buy a new AZ/EL rotator mine current one is 15yrs old and dead.

I need proper advice on what to by how to configure and maybe help to operate
the set up once it is going. I have tried shout outs on local repeater but
nobody seems to do Satellite.

For all current Amateur Satellites, elevation control is not needed 98% of
the time. If you are willing to give up the 2%, you can operate with a
manual $70 azimuth only TV rotator instead of a $500 full AZ/EL rotator.
Just mount the antenna tilted up at 15 degrees above the horizon and you
will have plenty of gain throughout any orbital pass, but can also use it
terrestrially too because the max gain is still on the horizon where it is
needed most.

[amsat-bb] Re: AO-07 Distorted audio

2014-04-25 Thread Paul Stoetzer
Absolutely!

The recommendation at the time of launch was to limit power output to no
more than 100W ERP (which is about 25 watts to a small antenna like an Elk
or an Arrow). This is even more critical now since the solar panels are
almost certainly not supplying enough power to drive the transmitter to
it's full power output. At certain times of the year, there are poor solar
angles on the panels too, which reduces power availability. Remember too
that AO-7 will enter a period where it eclipses on every orbit over the
south pole within the next week or so. That period will last for about 9
weeks. It should be in Mode B every day as a result, but from what I've
read about past eclipse cycles, it can act a bit odd during that time.

On too many passes, I hear distorted audio and reflections throughout the
transponder from it being hit too hard with SSB and especially CW. CW,
being full power at key down, unlike SSB, is even harder on a linear
transponder.

If everyone would just have the courtesy to keep their uplink power to a
reasonable level, AO-7 can be a very enjoyable satellite with a large
footprint providing the best DX opportunities currently available.
Unfortunately, this problem is not new as a glance at the AMSAT Newsletters
from 1974-1981 shows.

I recommend the following reading: The Editorial + Letter from W4NUL/5 in
the March 1976 AMSAT Newsletter, the AMSAT-OSCAR-7 QRP Test Telemetry
Report in the November 1976 AMSAT Newsletter, and the June 1976 QRP Test
Results from the December 1976 AMSAT Newsletter. All available here:
http://www.ka9q.net/AMSAT-Newsletter-1976.pdf

Please calculate your ERP ( http://www.csgnetwork.com/antennaecalc.html )
and keep it to no more than 100W.

Space Weather News for April 25, 2014

X-FLARE: On April 25th, an active region near the sun's western limb
erupted, producing an impulsive X-class solar flare. A pulse of extreme UV
radiation from the flare ionized Earth's upper atmosphere and caused a
shortwave radio blackout on the dayside of Earth. However, a CME hurled

A digit sat could be sent the tx power and use that in combination with

Older (first HF rig) Yaesu FT-817 UHF/VHF/HF Low power - currently used only
for local 2mtr repeater.

KENWOOD TS 2000 VHF/UHF HF Has SAT features. No Antenna (Has separate VHF/UHF &
1.2Ghz connectors ) currently I do not have suitable antenna awaiting ideas.
HAS SignalLink connected and to Computer for Ham Radio Delux connection

ICOM IC7000 [AT-100ProII Autotuner] Connected to two G5RV Jr]

2 x SCS PTC-IIusb DSP Multimode PACTOR Controllers these have ability (Not that
I know how in most cases) to do Pactor, amt or, rtty, fax/sstv, CW, Packet

Rotator is dead - so will buy new onadvice.

I can will change any / all of this configuration on advice

I have a morse key and paddle but have NO morse.

More importantly is it worth doing any longer - I have listened for a long time
and not heard much chit chat about satellite or space or radio astronomy.

As for what interests me - all sorts, just getting the stuff to work and talk
voice or digitally to somebody else would be a good start. I want to know if
there are sats that can be accessed regularly and relatively easily from the
UK? Is there much activity.

I would do weather stuff, moon bounce, data, packet, aprs or anything else for
that matter if I could and understood (I mean i'm not stupid I do know some
stuff) more about what was out there to do and get my teeth into. Is there any
real research stuff worth doing and so the list goes on with the questions.

for Dave G4DPZ - I have a FunCube dongle, lost interest when I couldn't get
anything out of it on day one… so perhaps you can help me get my monies worth
their too.

Cheers all for the replies thus far.

[amsat-bb] Re: AO-07 an US station answer my call.

2014-04-25 Thread Paul Stoetzer
I hope you do get in touch with the W station that answered you today and
work him.

For everyone who was following the AO-7 power discussion earlier: the X-200
has a specified gain of 8 dBi, with his specified power output of 5 watts,
that's about 19 watts ERP. That was enough to receive an answer from a
station at least 7,000 km away. That proves the point that you don't need
to crank the power up. Treat the old lady gently and she will reward you
with many great QSOs!

Paul, N8HM

[amsat-bb] Re: AO-07 Distorted audio

2014-04-25 Thread i8cvs
Hi Bryce,

Just to remember for the history:

AO40 uses LEILA wich continuously scanned the Mode-S
passband and superimposed an intermitted sound like a horn
over those uplink signal wich peaks where more than 10 dB
belove the beacon level.

In addition LEILA suppressed several dB and distorted those
uplink signals that do not reduced immediately their EIRP
