Wish I could go back to Dayton. To many OM problems.

Our Club Call K4AMG was my Uncle Bob's, and he was one of the founders of
the Dayton Hamvention. Back then his call was W8QDI.

Hope some of you guys will be able to attend Carole Perry's (WB2MGP)
Instructors and youth Forums.

Have a great time.

God Bless

Subject: [amsat-bb] Off to Dayton...

Hi!

I'm flying out of Phoenix tomorrow morning to Indianapolis, and will be in
Dayton Thursday evening before the start of the Hamvention for the AMSAT
gathering at Tickets Pub. Along with some time working the AMSAT
demonstration station outside the arena, I plan on working other passes
outside of the Hamvention between Thursday (15 May) morning and midday
Monday (19 May) from wherever I happen to be at that time - including some
AO-7 (and possibly FO-29) passes where Europe is in the footprint with me.
Even if I'm waking up at 0-dark-30 to get outside for those passes. I'm
already

planning a very early Thursday morning for an AO-7 pass around 0820 UTC
+/- to start my operating out there.

If you are in Europe and have Dayton in the footprint on a particular
pass,

please e-mail me directly. I would enjoy the chance to work you, and will
be happy to provide contact information to help line up a potential QSO.
I

did this in 2010, working OZ1MY and 2E1EUB on the same AO-7 pass in
SSB from outside Dayton on the EN70/EN80 grid boundary, so I know it is
possible with my portable station.

I'll try to post updates here on the -BB for my operating, whether at the
Hamvention or somewhere else. My @WD9EWK Twitter feed - you can read
it at http://twitter.com/WD9EWK if you don't do Twitter yourself - will
probably

be a great way to see the latest updates, since I know I can send SMS
messages to Twitter without an Internet connection from almost anywhere
I'll

go. I'll have my TH-D72A with me, and run APRS as WD9EWK-9 as I drive.
I should start showing up on APRS tomorrow afternoon, which will be
visible
at http://aprs.fi/WD9EWK-9 if my APRS packets find their way to an
Internet

gateway (and be the best way to see where I end up on Wednesday evening,
before that early AO-7 pass Thursday morning).

I will try to upload my QSOs to Logbook of the World daily, and each QSO
will have the proper information for my QTH at that time. I have QSL card
designs ready to print after I return home next week, and for some
locations
I've already printed QSL cards. If you work me in the next few days and
then

see me at Dayton, I'll be happy to write out a QSL card on the spot - or
e-mail me the QSO details, and I'll send you a card after I'm back home.
If
we don't work on a satellite pass in the next few days, I'll be happy to
meet

you at Dayton. :-)

73!

I will follow the Dayton fun at home, I see there is a special 'Dayton'
page at aprs.fi which will be fun to watch in the upcoming days:

http://hamvention.aprs.fi/

The page mentions the 2009 hamvention, but the embedded map is updated in
real-time.

Lots of options for those staying at home and having a little or a lot of
time for a peek at the hamvention.

I personally don't have SSB-capable equipment at the moment (hoping to
change that when budget and time permits). I do hope you manage to make
some interesting new contacts with others who do!

2014-05-14 Thread Patrick STODDARD (WD9EWK/VA7EWK)
Björn,

Any chance you guys could try AO-7 a little earlier on Saturday?
There is a pass around 0814-0830 UTC over here that could work
for a QSO between your grid JO32 and EM79 where I will be this
weekend. That is early over here, but I can sleep after the weekend
on the flight home. :-) Looks like the distance would be around
6700km between us. You could have a nice shot of working others
in the eastern USA and Canada on that pass as well.

[amsat-bb] UHF antenna radiation pattern measurement

2014-05-14 Thread Ryan Caron

All,

My students and I are working on a way to rapidly measure the radiation
pattern of various UHF antennas. We are using a pair of RFM22s - the
transmitter sends magnetometer (azimuth) and accelerometer (elevation)
data from a LSM303 along with its output power level. The receiving
RFM22 appends the received signal strength value.

From there what we want to do is real time plotting on a net book. 2D
seems readily achievable through either LabView's polar plots or a
number of different Python plotting libraries. However what we'd really
like to do is real-time 3D plotting, but we don't know the right
toolchain or libraries. We know we can do it in Matlab, but that won't
be in real time.

Are we on the right track? Has this been done before? Should we settle
for a pair of 2D plots, or can real time 3D be done?

Is there interest in the community for something like this? If it is,
that would place different requirements on us (economical, easy to
duplicate, good documentation, open software, etc).

[amsat-bb] Driving to Dayton (Voice Alert)

2014-05-14 Thread Robert Bruninga
Driving to Dayton:

For AMSAT guys, even if you don’t have an APRS radio, set an HT in your car
to 144.39 with CTCSS 100 and the speaker will be 100% quiet unless there is
an APRS mobile in simplex range, and then you will hear his CQ once a
minute. If you hear one, then he is in SIMPLEX range and you can call him
on voice and tell him to meet you on 52,

If you do have an APRS radio:

Don’t forget to keep that Voice Alert volume UP and to CLEAR all the
messages in your D700 and D7 mailboxes!!!

Nothing more frustrating than to hear your CQ PINGS and then you are not
listening for Voice Alert responses and your radio is rejecting messages
telling you to wake up!

If you don’t know what Voice Alert is, crawl out from under your rock and
read this:

http://aprs.org/VoiceAlert3.html

OR, to make it simple, simply set the APRS side of your radio to CTCSS 100
and keep the data channel volume UP to receive voice alert calls (and pings
from nearby mobiles in simplex range).

Far more effective at finding a fellow driver than calling CQ on 52 every
minute.

Recently there was a problem with my SimpleSat Look Down program that was
related to a Bing Maps licensing issue. A few people contacted me about it
and sorry to say I did not keep a list of their email addresses. I have
resolved the problem with Microsoft and my license to use Bing Maps should
not expire. I also added code to better deal with the vagaries of Tle web

[amsat-bb] Spam via amsat.org reflector

2014-05-14 Thread Phil Karn
Like most people here I have an email address on amsat.org that
automatically relays to my primary email address.

I get a **lot** of spam via this path; a quick check shows that fully 96
out of 244 recent spam messages (as classified by Gmail) received at my
primary email address had been addressed to, and relayed via,
k...@amsat.org.

I'm tempted to just ask that my forwarding alias be turned off, but I
have found this service handy myself in reaching other AMSAT members so
I hesitate to do this.

Would there be interest (and would it be possible) to modify the
amsat.org email service to, instead of forwarding the mail, return a
simple canned message saying that amsat.org member so-and-so can be
reached directly at your canonical email here?

This could be implemented with the existing vacation reminder service,
which most UNIX-based email systems provide. When enabled, it returns a
reminder to the first message from each distinct sender and optionally
declines to deliver the original message.

This does create the risk that spammers will merely harvest our email
addresses from the bounce notices. But most spammers don't even provide
a valid reply address, much less look at anything it gets. But just in
case, you could spell it out in one of the usual obfuscated ways that
require a human to interpret it. E.g., the forwarding notice could give
my primary email address as karn (at) ka9q (dot) nXXet, remove the two
'XX's.

Ideas?

So I keep the DELETE key armed and ready to fire.

AMSAT is in the process of moving e-mail to a new server vs. our 15
