[amsat-bb] Logging programs

2009-11-25 Thread Bob Herrell
Hi all,

Is there a logging program that will log satellite contacts (grid square
and satellite) as well as keeping track of the grid squares worked so
you know if it is a dupe? I have not been able to find anything that
will do it.

Thanks

[amsat-bb] SO-67 CAT data

2009-12-23 Thread Bob Herrell
I am using SatPC32 with my IC-910H. The radio will do Narrow FM. Is
there any way to program the Doppler file to make the radio go to FMN
automatically? This sure would be handy for SO-67. I have tried both NFM
and FMN to no avail.

Lately my LVB Tracker (USB) has been stopping in the middle of a pass.
It does not happen all the time, but lately it has been happening more

When this happens I have to turn the G-5500 off/on then restart SatPC32.
Has anyone experienced this with their tracker? I wonder if I should
remove the USB chip and use the RS-232 port.

Thanks.

[amsat-bb] Re: AO-51 short experiment

2010-10-24 Thread Bob Herrell
Alan,

I agree with you totally. It is going to be an ongoing problem and unless
individual operators take responsibility for their emissions, it is going to
continue. Even with coordination the frequency is still not owned by any
particular station. It is just common courtesy that we need to show to each
other. Are these APRS stations just beaconing in hopes of hitting the ISS or
are
they in use for normal APRS? I don't see 145.825MHz being used as a terrestrial
frequency. I can understand the problem when HO-68 and the ISS are in the same
footprint, but to run a station continuously on 145.825MHz is crazy. I do send
packets to the ISS myself, but ONLY when it is in view and turned on. It all
boils down to the old idea of "Listen before you talk".

Bob

Subject: RE: [amsat-bb] Re: AO-51 short experiment

Bob,

145.825 is the "established" space APRS frequency, and has been/is used by
more than just the ISS for years. There are other APRS satellites which are
intermittently active on the same frequency, and I expect there will be
others in the future. I can't address the formal coordination issue, but
anything with an uplink on that frequency is guaranteed to have problems.
The only question is whether those problems are tolerable. There is little
to no APRS activity on that frequency over most of the world, and then there
is the question of both HO-68 and the ISS being in the same footprint. The
HO-68 has an inclination of about 102 degrees, the ISS about half that.
Finally, the ISS is not active on that frequency 24/7. It operates on other
frequencies for voice and SSTV, and is often QRT completely due to other
operations. In an imperfect world, it looks like a reasonable tradeoff,
though other evaluations are certainly possible.

The problem of unattended APRS beacons does cut both ways. There are some
daylight-only APRS satellites. When they enter periods of extended
illumination, they can be commanded from their default modes. However, even
a single "braaap" can pull the DC busses low enough that the command
stations need to start over again. WB4APR has lamented this problem, with
specific calls, in other venues. Looking at some of the paths, both in
Drew's example and my reception, there are stations whose paths have not
been updated for years.

The sort of courtesy/coordination issue is not limited to space operations.
A ham relatively local to me fired up a propagation beacon on 30 meters this
month. It is/was within 200 HZ of an APRS frequency which has been in use
for some time. Quite a fight over who "owns" the frequency. ;)

[amsat-bb] LVB Tracker & G-5500 Rotator

2011-01-07 Thread Bob Herrell
Hi All,

I am having problems trying to use the LVB Tracker/G5500 on the Serial
Port. My box will not communicate. Mike Young sent me another box with
the MAX232 chip and I am not able to communicate with it either. I can
control the G5500 via the LVB faceplate.

I am using COM Port 1, 9600, 8-N-1 None and CAN communicate with
hyperterminal with a loopback plug. When it is plugged to the LVB box I
am NOT able to communicate via hyperterminal or SatPC32. The SDX Server
is set correctly to COM1/9600, has been saved and SatPC32 recycled.
Still no go.

My original box, when the USB chip is removed and a MAX232 chip
installed appears to communicate with the G5500, but when the G5500 is
powered off, both meters on the G5500 peg to the max. Very strange.
Still not control via Serial port.

Anyone have any ideas? Mike & I are stumped on this one.

[amsat-bb] Re: reply from arrl on new vucc fees

2011-01-24 Thread Bob Herrell
From what I read from Bill Moore's post, the ARRL has got their last
penny out of me. Charging per QSO is absurd, especially if you have
already had your cards checked by a ARRL Card Checker.

_Eg: If someone has a first time ever Satellite VUCC with 250 QSOs the
fees would
be:
?
$7.00 for the application
$50.00 for 250 QSOs @ $0.20 each
$12.00 for the certificate
$1.00 for paperwork/sticker return
?
His total would be $70.00_

I find that totally unacceptable. Yes, I know awards are getting
expensive, but I think the ARRL is getting a bit GREEDY.

I think I will continue working for the AMSAT Awards and forget about
the rest. I agree, AMSAT needs to have an AMSAT WAS and AMSAT VUCC
Award. My ARRL Satellite VUCC came with the word "Satellite" typed on
the certificate. Whatever happened to the term "OSCAR WAS" or "OSCAR VUCC"?

Sorry to rant, but I am getting feed up with the antics of the ARRL. And
yes, I am a member. It's time to let your ARRL Leadership know your
feelings.

Hi all,

After taking with several of you, I have decided to upload my logs to
EQSL also. Just finished uploading 4,082 new records. Hope that helps
with your EQSL Awards. I upload LOTW every evening.

I will QSL direct to all contacts that are in my log. I will also upload to
LoTW (as soon as I figure out how to make a new account) and to Eqsl.
No SASE needed. This will take place once I return home in mid February.

Hope to work you on AO-27 and maybe SO-50.
