Re: [amsat-bb] FM birds
Tracking doppler on 2m and 70cm was hard enough at field day. I like 2GHz and up, but do not want to even think about the doppler. In the KITSAT days, I used an IC-751 as the receive IF. It has a true FM detector, with discriminator centered at 0-volts. It steps in 1 or 10 Hz increments, even on FM. I wrote a simple radio-control program which would take data from InstantTrack, calculate frequency from that, and set the radio on the expected frequency at the beginning of the pass. Didn't matter if there was a little error, once AOS happened, the AFC put the receiver dead-on, and I got good data for the entire pass -- hands free. It was a joy to watch. And that was a simple digital mode. The other thing that is exciting about going digital, is the idea of CAT-5 (or fiber) to the box at the antenna, not coax. Digital will enable so much . . . . 73, Jim wb4...@amsat.org On 7/27/2014 1:24 AM, Phil Karn wrote: On 07/22/2014 07:49 AM, wa4...@comcast.net wrote: SSB/CW birds are the only way to go and if you build it they will come . Sure, you could have a second receiver track the satellite's beacon. But if you're going to all that trouble, why not just have it track a single high speed data stream from the satellite, one that's much less affected by Doppler in the first place? ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Re: [amsat-bb] going digital
Which is exactly what the FunCube guys did, and look at what they've wrought!! 73, Jim wb4...@amsat.org When DirecTV designed their satellite broadcast system, did they worry about backward compatibility with the multitude (or so it probably seemed) of existing C-band BUD (Big Ugly Dish) owners? All of whom were then receiving analog FM, I might add. If not, then why are they still in business? Probably because they didn't design a satellite. They designed an entire _/*system*/_ including ground station components as well as flight hardware. The ground system components were made available such that their target audience was able to upgrade their BUD installations with only reasonable expenditures of time, effort and money. But that's just a guess in my part. I'd love to chat with you on the new digital hamsat, but if it's going to require I spend $5k+ on hard-to-source, esoteric components and cobble them together with duct tape, then it'll be a while before I'm QRV. So, the first few days after launch those 60 DV channels may be a little quiet. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Otherwise, I guess I could source one overseas, ship it in, then bow down before the Customs Excise godlings. ham gear is 10 + 17.5% but there's no way they'd pass that as ham gear, so probably 115 + 17.5% or worse. When I lived in Hampton Roads (and was in the Nav) I eventually came on to the following algorithm: 2 layers of good electrical tape 2 layers of coax seal 2 more layers of good electrical tape, each overlapping the under layer. When I retired from the Navy and took the antennas down, connectors that had been in the air for 15 years looked brand new. An additional bennie, if I had to open one up, just a slit with a knife and I could peel the layers back get access to the connector. When done, just press back into place and cover with 2 more layers of good tape. Worked great for me. I've been working with Hughes customer service since October --unsatisfactory: -- they have not been able to improve things for more than a couple of hours -- they cannot deviate from the script, and want to blame my router -- even when it is out of circuit -- they have difficulty with the language -- they are unwilling or unable to connect me to a higher level of tech support So, Hughes is about to become history. I've recently learned about a new satellite service called exede, which I've traced to Wild Blue under a new name. They claim up to 12Mb download rates, but have a total capacity cap -- which appears to be well beyond my average daily use. (I only busted Hughes' daily limit once in 3 years, when I installed WindersXP on a new machine and had to get all the service packs and security fixes.) All: For what it's worth, I think I prefer the manual doppler correction on the highest frequency, which can be done manually. For whatever my opinion is worth 73, Jim wb4...@amsat.org On 7/24/2011 5:17 PM, Tom Schaefer, NY4I wrote: Hi all, I just tried a nice pass on FO-29. I heard K9CIS on CW and W5BK from Texas. K9CIS on CW was quite extreme in the Doppler shift. I know that this is a by-product of me using full doppler to listen to stations that are not, but it seems that the majority of the stations I hear are NOT using flu doppler. I have asked this question before, but it seems to be happening more frequently. Should I abandon full doppler correction? Another less black-and-white step is that if I hear a station moving to adjust my settings so I am not doing full doppler. Has anyone ever taken a survey to see how many satellite users actually use full doppler. Am I assuming more guys use computers and anyone of the multiple ways to do computer control that have ben available for years? Does anyone ever talk about this in AMSAT circles? Sort of like the encouragement one gives to people afraid of LOTW to try it? Computers in the shack…NEVER! I exaggerate but it seems that way. [amsat-bb] Re: searching advice on low pass filter for 146 MHz
Werner: I EMPHATICALLY agree with the advice to turn down the gain. Improving your IMD will provide much more bang for the effort than trying to find a filter with a loaded Q of over 100 at 2m. An easy way (if imperfect) to get it right is to maximize the RF gain in the Icom radio and then adjust gain down until the preamp-on noise is only SLIGHTLY higher than preamp off. This gets you enough gain to let the preamp set system noise figure, although you still have a bit of excess. Good luck and please share your results! 73, Jim wb4...@amsat.org On 4/27/2011 1:15 PM, Werner Kullmann, HB9BNK wrote: What an amazing responsetime on this list ! (post the question, go shopping, find valuable advice !) thank you all very much ! It will be a few days, until I can get at the antenna. [amsat-bb] Re: Yaesu 847 vs. Icom 910
I have a 910, a friend has an 847. We typically use both at Field Day. I think the 910 is a better satellite radio. Good luck! 73, Jim wb4...@amsat.org On 2/16/2011 12:46 AM, Phil wrote: On Tue, 15 Feb 2011 12:00:41 pm zach hillerson wrote: I am finally in the market for a base station radio for satellites. I should mention that I am also planning to install a wire dipole in the backyard for HF work, but convenience shouldn't be the reason to buy/not to buy a radio. It seems that the Icom 910 and Yaesu 847 are the two main transceivers in base use for satellites. I know some folks are using the Kenwood TS2000, bu i t I understand thatit has a birdie that makes operation on a couple FM satellites challenging. I am hoping to work both the linear and fm birds with this transceiver. Is there a BB favorite? Have I just opened up a bad can of worms? I just want to make sure that I am purchasing the proper parts the first time Hello Zach, I've owned an FT-847 for the past eleven years and although it has served me well (mostly satellite use but some HF operation as well) it has several annoying birdies which are most noticeable the 144 MHz band. One particularly annoying S7 birdie appears around 145.9 MHz which makes communication via VO-52 difficult at times. Other that that it has been a very reliable radio. ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] Nova for Windows question
All: In preparation for Echoes of Apollo event this spring, I'm resurrecting Nova and rotors, etc. Interesting anomaly. Background: My desktop has Nova version 2.1v My laptop (which will be used for the event) has Nova version 2.2b First issue is why are they different; don't remember -- though all was the same. More important: When I launched Nova on the laptop, I had no views configured. Which I attributed to a new install following a new hard drive a year or so ago, but now I'm not so sure -- something may be corrupted. Copied the views file from desktop to laptop and most was well. HOWEVER, could not find moon or AO-51. Rebuild data base (IAW help file and FAQ) and found Echo (AO-51), which I can drag into my current view and track. Moon shows up on list of celestial objects, but I'm not allowed to drag it into the tracking list -- get an error message about no keplerian elements available. (Which is no surprise; I think I recall that Nova uses a different algorithm for moon and sun.) Question: What do I have to do to be able to track the moon in Nova for Windows 2.2b? [amsat-bb] Re: SSB pre-Amps
I use them as well, and REALLY like them. At Field Day, for simplicity, I power them up the coax from the IC910. Home station, they get separately powered through a sequencer. 73, Jim wb4...@amsat.org On 1/30/2011 4:31 PM, Dave wrote: Hi group- Is anyone using the SSBUSA-2000 and SSBUSA-7000 pre-amps?
