Re: [amsat-bb] FM birds

2014-07-27 Thread Jim Sanford
Tracking doppler on 2m and 70cm was hard enough at field day. I like
2GHz and up, but do not want to even think about the doppler.

In the KITSAT days, I used an IC-751 as the receive IF. It has a true
FM detector, with discriminator centered at 0-volts. It steps in 1 or
10 Hz increments, even on FM. I wrote a simple radio-control program
which would take data from InstantTrack, calculate frequency from that,
and set the radio on the expected frequency at the beginning of the
pass. Didn't matter if there was a little error, once AOS happened, the
AFC put the receiver dead-on, and I got good data for the entire pass --
hands free. It was a joy to watch. And that was a simple digital mode.

The other thing that is exciting about going digital, is the idea of
CAT-5 (or fiber) to the box at the antenna, not coax.

Digital will enable so much . . . .

Before you say computer control, work out the effect of even a tiny
error in your clock or orbital elements on a high elevation pass and
remember that SSB has no carrier or pilot tone for closed-loop frequency
tracking.

Sure, you could have a second receiver track the satellite's beacon. But
if you're going to all that trouble, why not just have it track a
single high speed data stream from the satellite, one that's much less
affected by Doppler in the first place?

When DirecTV designed their satellite broadcast system, did they worry

about backward compatibility with the multitude (or so it probably
seemed) of existing C-band BUD (Big Ugly Dish) owners? All of whom were
then receiving analog FM, I might add.

If not, then why are they still in business?

Probably because they didn't design a satellite. They designed an
entire _/*system*/_ including ground station components as well as
flight hardware. The ground system components were made available such
that their target audience was able to upgrade their BUD installations
with only reasonable expenditures of time, effort and money. But
that's just a guess in my part.

I'd love to chat with you on the new digital hamsat, but if it's going
to require I spend $5k+ on hard-to-source, esoteric components and
cobble them together with duct tape, then it'll be a while before I'm
QRV. So, the first few days after launch those 60 DV channels may be
a little quiet.

Actually, DirecTV is not available for purchase in my neck of the

fiddle with.

Are its components hard to source or esoteric?

Well, I know where I could nick one, but I'd rather not. Otherwise, I
guess I could source one overseas, ship it in, then bow down before
the Customs Excise godlings. ham gear is 10 + 17.5% but there's
no way they'd pass that as ham gear, so probably 115 + 17.5% or
worse. That might satisfy Rx needs, but wouldn't include a
transmitter Does that sound hard to source or esoteric?

If not, what makes you think that a digital ground station for an
AMSAT satellite should be?

Phil, I'm not saying it /should/ be, but that if it is, you won't get
many users on the system. So, part of the system design for any such
bird had better include design of low cost, easy to find, simple to
use hardware that will allow me -- or any other doofus like me -- to
get QRV without too much hardship.

[amsat-bb] Re: why not to buy an M2 antenna Sealing Coax

2013-12-10 Thread Jim Sanford
When I lived in Hampton Roads (and was in the Nav) I eventually came on
to the following algorithm:

2 layers of good electrical tape
2 layers of coax seal
2 more layers of good electrical tape, each overlapping the under layer.

When I retired from the Navy and took the antennas down, connectors that
had been in the air for 15 years looked brand new. An additional
bennie, if I had to open one up, just a slit with a knife and I could
peel the layers back get access to the connector. When done, just
press back into place and cover with 2 more layers of good tape.

Worked great for me.

Well I look my antennas over each year but they have always been
relatively easy to get at even when they were on a glen martin tower
on the roof, I could see every other year if it is a major
undertaking but based on his call he is in New York, to think you can
put a antenna up and ignore it for years in a area with snow and
freezing temps stretches reason.

I'm also a fan of coax seal and some sort of coating on the
elements, When I look my antennas over I'm checking for loose bolts
and UV damage to plastic parts and coax, out on the west coast it is
the Sun and heat that is the thing to worry about.

Smith chart program
EZNEC
Some kind of CAD program for doing schematic and other drawings (I use
TurboCAD, mostly because I've used it for over 15 years and found a new
version relatively expensively)
Elsie filter design software (say you want a better diplexer to use 2m
and 70cm radios on the same dual-band antenna, Elsie will let you design
up to 7 or 9 poles)
Obvious office stuff (I use OpenOffice, tho have MS on the laptop for
the rare occasion OO doesn't quite cut it)
Skype -- don't use it often, but nice to have when you want it,
especially with all the time I spend in hotel rooms
A good restore disk creator. I had to buy one for the XP desktop, but
think the Win7 laptop came with it, albeit VERY difficult to find.
Finally, a manual -- continuing the tradition of refusing to provide
user documentation with the product (it's all in the help files -- yeah,
right) I bought Windows 7, the missing manual from O'Reilly. Missing
manual is a series, this is the first one I've bought, and it has been
VERY helpful in figuring out Win7. I hate the new interface (why must
they tinker for the sake of tinkering?!) but I really do like the much
faster boot, awake, and shutdown of Win7 compared to XP (on comparable
processors -- replaced both machines within a month of each other.)

I'll be eager to see others' lists -- probably a WHOLE lot better ideas
out there!

[amsat-bb] OT -- Satellite Internet

2012-03-19 Thread Jim Sanford

All:

Living out here in the boondocks (so I can plant a tower and grow a
credible aluminum microwave array) my internet options are dialup,
verizon, and satellite.

Verizon was unreliable (couldn't stay connected; had to reset the device
several times an hour), so gave up.

Looked at satellite, considered Wild Blue. Then heard bad things about
them. Then they no longer served my area.

Went with Hughes, which was OK for a year or so, then fell on their
sword. Paying for 1mb downloads, getting 200K to 700K. Most emails
have to be sent several times before getting through without some kind
of error -- which does not happen when I take the same laptop on the
road and connect through a hotel network. I've been working with Hughes
customer service since October --unsatisfactory:
-- they have not been able to improve things for more than a couple
of hours
-- they cannot deviate from the script, and want to blame my router
-- even when it is out of circuit

-- they have difficulty with the language
-- they are unwilling or unable to connect me to a higher level of
tech support

So, Hughes is about to become history.

I've recently learned about a new satellite service called exede,
which I've traced to Wild Blue under a new name. They claim up to 12Mb
download rates, but have a total capacity cap -- which appears to be
well beyond my average daily use. (I only busted Hughes' daily limit
once in 3 years, when I installed WindersXP on a new machine and had to
get all the service packs and security fixes.)

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience, good or bad, with
exede/WildBlue. Please respond direct, off list, to wb4...@amsat.org

To list members and operators: thanks for indulging brief, off-topic
but related, info.

Subject: [amsat-bb] Good 70cm all mode radios for satellites

What are some of the best 70cm all mode radios to use on the satellites? I
am looking for a monoband radio, not one of the HF/VHF/UHF radios as I have
the other bands covered already. I would like one that is plenty sensitive
on FM as well to receive the FM satellites.

[amsat-bb] Re: Should I abandon full doppler correction?

2011-07-24 Thread Jim Sanford
All:

For what it's worth, I think I prefer the manual doppler correction on
the highest frequency, which can be done manually.
Full doppler essentially requires constant computer control of both tx
rx frequencies, AND a whole lot of accurate data.

I've had similar experiences at Field Day, and was able to pick out the
guys doing full doppler, and rarely able to work them.

For whatever my opinion is worth

 Hi all,

I just tried a nice pass on FO-29. I heard K9CIS on CW and W5BK from Texas.
In both cases, while I am using full doppler correction with my 9100 and
MacDoppler, I suspect they are leaving the transmit frequency fixed as they
both changed frequency. K9CIS on CW was quite extreme in the Doppler shift. I
know that this is a by-product of me using full doppler to listen to stations
that are not, but it seems that the majority of the stations I hear are NOT
using flu doppler. I have asked this question before, but it seems to be
 happening more frequently.

Should I abandon full doppler correction? Another less black-and-white step
is that if I hear a station moving to adjust my settings so I am not doing
 full doppler.

Has anyone ever taken a survey to see how many satellite users actually use
full doppler. Am I assuming more guys use computers and anyone of the
multiple ways to do computer control that have ben available for years? Does
anyone ever talk about this in AMSAT circles? Sort of like the encouragement
one gives to people afraid of LOTW to try it? Computers in the shack…NEVER!
I exaggerate but it seems that way. Then again, being a computer person and
having computer capable rigs I realize I am skewed in my expectations. I know
there are guys working with old 271/471 pairs or even the old FT726 out
there. Great radios and a simple way to do it, but even they have ways to do
full doppler control and they have been out for 20 years.

 Thanks,

 Tom

[amsat-bb] Re: searching advice on low pass filter for 146 MHz

2011-04-27 Thread Jim Sanford
Werner:
I EMPHATICALLY agree with the advice to turn down the gain. Improving
your IMD will provide much more bang for the effort than trying to find
a filter with a loaded Q of over 100 at 2m.

An easy way (if imperfect) to get it right is to maximize the RF gain
in the Icom radio and then adjust gain down until the preamp-on noise is
only SLIGHTLY higher than preamp off. This gets you enough gain to let
the preamp set system noise figure, although you still have a bit of excess.

Good luck and please share your results!

[amsat-bb] Re: Yaesu 847 vs. Icom 910

2011-02-17 Thread Jim Sanford
I have a 910, a friend has an 847. We typically use both at Field Day.
I think the 910 is a better satellite radio.
Good luck!

I am finally in the market for a base station radio for satellites. I

It seems that the Icom 910 and Yaesu 847 are the two main transceivers in
base use for satellites. I know some folks are using the Kenwood TS2000,
bu i t I understand thatit has a birdie that makes operation on a couple
FM satellites challenging. I am hoping to work both the linear and fm
 birds with this transceiver.

Is there a BB favorite? Have I just opened up a bad can of worms? I just
want to make sure that I am purchasing the proper parts the first time

 Hello Zach,

I've owned an FT-847 for the past eleven years and although it has served me
well (mostly satellite use but some HF operation as well) it has several
annoying birdies which are most noticeable the 144 MHz band. One particularly
annoying S7 birdie appears around 145.9 MHz which makes communication via
 VO-52 difficult at times.

Other that that it has been a very reliable radio.

[amsat-bb] Nova for Windows question

2011-02-15 Thread Jim Sanford
All:
In preparation for Echoes of Apollo event this spring, I'm resurrecting
Nova and rotors, etc. Interesting anomaly.

Background: My desktop has Nova version 2.1v
My laptop (which will be used for the event)
has Nova version 2.2b

First issue is why are they different; don't remember -- though all was
the same.

More important:
When I launched Nova on the laptop, I had no views configured.
Which I attributed to a new install following a new hard drive a year or
so ago, but now I'm not so sure -- something may be corrupted. Copied
the views file from desktop to laptop and most was well. HOWEVER, could
not find moon or AO-51. Rebuild data base (IAW help file and FAQ) and
found Echo (AO-51), which I can drag into my current view and track.
Moon shows up on list of celestial objects, but I'm not allowed to drag
it into the tracking list -- get an error message about no keplerian
elements available. (Which is no surprise; I think I recall that Nova
uses a different algorithm for moon and sun.)

Question: What do I have to do to be able to track the moon in Nova
for Windows 2.2b?

Thanks and very 73,
Jim

[amsat-bb] Re: SSB pre-Amps

2011-01-30 Thread Jim Sanford
I use them as well, and REALLY like them. At Field Day, for simplicity,
I power them up the coax from the IC910. Home station, they get
separately powered through a sequencer.
