[amsat-bb] DN20 Nevada
For those of you I worked on AO-51 Monday morning Sep 20, 2010 from DN20 in Wendover, Nevada, K8YSE, N9AMW, WA4NVM, and N5UXT, I have made out your QSL and will be sending them off in the next day or two. Your card will not be necessary in return. Thanks for the contacts! WA7HQD Lee Ernstrom, Syracuse, Utah ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] DN42
I plan on being in DN42ca again early Tuesday morning and I hope to be able to work AO51 again for those of you who need that grid. Afterwards I will spend the rest of the day helping my son build his house just across the Idaho/Utah line in DN41. In the afternoon I might get a chance to go back to DN42 and work an evening pass. Thought you might like the heads up. WA7HQD Lee Ernstrom Syracuse, Utah DN31xb ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] Playing with GPS
Hi Guys, I have been playing around with my Garman NUVI GPS and comparing the readings to Google Maps. This is something you call try at home. My Garman says that the base of my HF tower is at 41.07430 N 112.03774 W. When I punch in those coordinates in to Google Maps in the satelite view mode the arrow points to a location about 30 feet away near the middle of the lawn east of my driveway. When I play around with the coordinates a little through interpolation and punch them in to Google Maps several times I arrive at what appears to be the true coordinates of the base of my HF tower at 41.074329 N 112.037770 W. I suppose that is the significant difference that sixth decimal place makes. Check both of these coordinates on Google Maps to see what I mean. Any comments? [amsat-bb] Four Grids from one location
Hi folks, I was wondering if anyone has operated from one point where four grid squares meet. There is a location just a few miles to the west of where I operated portable from yesterday in Idaho where DN31, DN41, DN32, and DN42 meet. The terrain looks a little rugged but in about a week or so I'm going to drive back up there and check it out with my GPS. It looks like the location is off the dirt road about 1/4 mile so there will be a little hiking involved. WA7HQD Lee Ernstrom Syracuse, Utah DN31xb ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Maui on FM sats
Hi everyone, I will be in Maui on Wednesday and Thursday and will have my arrow antenna and handheld. I haven't checked the sats yet to see when the passes are. Any suggestions? [amsat-bb] DN31 and DN41
Hi guys, I will be working SO-50 this morning from the DN31/DN41 line on the 1607-1620 UTC pass with my hand held and Arrow antenna. Hope to work you. If you would like a card from that location please e-mail me at wa7...@arrl.net and I will send you my QSL. WA7HQD Lee Ernstrom Syracuse, Utah ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: Antenna setup
Hi Jacob, My satelite antenna is 4 elements on 2 meters and 8 elements on 430 with a pre-amp mounted on the UHF boom. The UHF antenna is used for receive only. Take a look at it on QRZ.com under my call sign. WA7HQD Lee Ernstrom Syracuse, Utah DN31xb -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org] On Behalf Of Jacob Tennant Sent: Thursday, March 11, 2010 6:32 PM To: Amsat BB Subject: [amsat-bb] Antenna setup Hello everyone, I have a antenna setup question as I am new to satellite operations so please bear with me... I have a 2meter beam and a 70cm beam from my former adventures into VHF weak signal operations and was wondering about using them for satellite work. Was thinking that since I don't have a az/el rotator yet, if I set them up on a single cross-boom with the TV rotator I have now, angle them with the elements at 45 degree angles and the booms angled 30 to 40 degrees front end up I might be able to get some decent ability into the FM satellites (AO51, SO50, AO27, ISS). I already have the good coax for them (LMR-400) and a duplexor for my FT-857D. Was going to try to install the antennas on top of my storage building with a height of approx. 16 feet. That's the highest structure I can get onto that belongs to me. Any alternate ideas or advice is always welcome as I said before this is all new to me. [amsat-bb] Re: Current Handheld
Hi Guys, I just ordered the microphone/headphone cable from HRO for my DJ-7G so I will soon be able to try it out on full duplex. I am very pleased, by the way, on how well the sub band receiver hears the satelites. WA7HQD Lee Ernstrom Syracuse, Utah DN31xb ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] DN41 ANYONE?
I am thinking about making a treck over to DN41 for the 2259-2310 UTC AO-51 pass this afternoon which is just a couple miles to the east of me. Is anyone interested in that grid? I could set up on the DN31/DN41 line. The satelite will rise to 16 degrees to the east of me and I will have a very short window due to the Wasatch range of the Rocky Mountains to the east. Then, on the next AO-51 pass the satelite will be at 66.3 degrees. I would entertain that possibility also. I will commit to it if I have any takers. I just completed my first QSOs through AO-51 at 12:25 UTC on my new DJ-G7 handheld and the Arrow antenna while standing on the back porch in a snow storm in the dark and cold. [amsat-bb] Christmas Gift: DJ-G7
Howdy Folks, I received the Alinco DJ-G7 handheld tri-band radio for a Christmas gift from the XYL and I am looking forward to activating some of the more rare grids around northern Utah in the very near future. I dicovered, however, that my arrow antenna's BNC connector doesn't plug directly to the DJ-G7's SMA antenna jack (imagine that) so I just ordered a BNC to SMA adaptor. Anyway, my question is are there any other DJ-G7 users here that can give me some insight into how effective this hand held is on the satelites? Thanks in advance for your response. [amsat-bb] The Shuttle and ISS last evening
Hi Sat folks, Last evening at 0045 to 0054 UTC just right after dark here in Utah there was a pass of the ISS and the space shuttle that was spectacular to watch. The two were separated and the shuttle was trailing the ISS in orbit probably by several hundred miles. The sight was just awesome!
