[amsat-bb] SO-67 on for the first time over Europe
Hi all, Just had a pass with AOS at 0946 UTC here in Copenhagen. It works as described on the page: http://www.amsatsa.org.za/ It means that you do not need the PL-tone once the transponder is started. In fact do not set the tone ON. The transponder sounds better without the tone. As before use FMN on the uplink - and turn the AF gain down until your modulation sounds good to yourself. Use of high power also seems to distort the audio on the downlink. This is just the experience from one short pass :-) The list on the homepage above may not be up to date all the time. When we receive confirmed lists from the control station we will publish on amsat-bb. Depending upon the time of the day - may need to sleep every now and again. This week until Monday next week I have only asked for morning passes over Europe. Next week I will ask for afternoon passes as well when the satellite is in Sun. Please remember we are just passengers on Sumbandilasat. If there are other tasks they take priority. 73 OZ1MY Ib ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] QRM from Italy on AO-27
Hi in Italy, I just listened to a pass of AO-27 with AOS at 1406 UTC here in Copenhagen. There were 2-3 Italian stations on in terestial communications. They were radio amateurs using calls - but too fast for me to make out. IW9??? and IZØ???. I am not sure but may be it is a repeater. There were a distinct 67 Hz tone on. I could make out two city names: Catania and Modena. If some satellite users know what it is please try to make them stop. Have a nice Sunday. 73 OZ1MY Ib ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] OSCAR 27 is not AO-27
Hi all, This may be known to some of you - but it has given me problems sometimes. OSCAR 27 is a different satellite than AO-27. OSCAR 27 is catalog number 18361. AMRAD-OSCAR-27 (AO-27) (AKA EYESAT) is catalog number 22825. OSCAR 27 is in the Transit series of satellites (NAVSAT). Other satellites in this series carry the OSCAR name and a number. I had this problem at a summer course in satellite technology for students from many countries. I said to them that they could use the keps for AO-27 for a project. AO-27 has a nice nearly circular orbit :-) Then they used OSCAR 27 - and I did not understand the the difference in the expected results in the start. Some lists of keplerian elements use EYESAT for AO-27. If you Goggle OSCAR 27 you get a lot of hits that are really AO-27. Greetings from Copenhagen. 73 OZ1MY Ib ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: AO-51 mode change and recommendation
Hi Alex and Mateusz, As you write it behaves strange ? At the pass with AOS here in Copenhagen at 1318 UTC it seems like some stations are using very HIGH power and that may be the problem.I could hear Mateusz and UA9UIZ - but as you said the audio was very low. Another thing I experienced was a complete cut of of the downlink ?? I thought it was local QRM at first - but may be it was the satellite. Did you hear the same ?? [amsat-bb] XW-1 linear transponder frequencies here
Hi all, Tried it for the first time this evening. I only had to change the downlink setting +200 Hz to hit the correct frequencies. You may experience differently with other radios. I use an IC-910. ICOM seems to display frequencies differently from the professional standard so that you have to be like 600 Hz to 800 Hz off the nominal carrier frequency in USB and LSB on the display. As far as I know the carrier frequency is used for professional radios. Great satellite. May it have a long life :-) 73 OZ1MY Ib ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] 3 passes of SO-67 today, Saturday over Europe
Hi all, SO-67 worked very well today with large downlink signal. The first pass was to the East of me - with SP5MG and myself on. This is the first time I have actualle seen the effect of the 3 second tail. The transmitter stayed up for those 3 seconds - very easy to see on the S-meter. The two next passes was the same as before. As Danni says in his e-mail, take the "tail" into account when working SO-67 :-) Please observe "good operating practice for FM repeater satellites" For SO-67 there is one more thing. Do not use a "normal" old deviation - use FM Narrow and turn down the mike gain. And perhaps even one more thing - when you have made a QSO on this new satellite - give way to others who have not :-) Have a nice weekend all. 73 OZ1MY Ib ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Conditions for the calculations: Used NOVA for Windows to find the maximum height. Used Jan Kings Spreed Sheet to find Slant Range with an elevation of 0 degrees. Multiplied by 2 to get maximum distance between two stations. Sat. Max. Height Slant Range Max. Distance between stations AO-51 817 km 3300 km 6600 km SO-50 690 km 3046 km 6092 km AO-27 800 km 3293 km 6586 km AO-Ø7 1459 km 4552 km 9104 km FO-29 1322 km 4314 km 8628 km VO-52 643 km 2935 km 5870 km SO-67 506 km 2591 km 5182 km XW-1 1200 km 4092 km 8184 km Hope it is right :-) 73 OZ1MY Ib ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Hi Mateusz, It sounds like Spanish to me. I heard it during the pass also. In Spain some people use the 2 meter band for privat talk. They are not necessarily radio amateurs. It is an old story :-( I tried to contact the Spanish authorities - but they do not do anything. It is often worse on the AO-27 uplink at 145.850 MHz. [amsat-bb] Linear transponder versus FM transponder for LEO satellites
Hi, The e-mail from I8CVS brings the issue up again. Why not just be happy to get one more transponder for us to use ? If you do not want to use a FM transponder so that be it. It is interesting to note that there are far more operators on the FM transponder satellites than on the linear satellites in Low Earth Orbit. Anyway the choice is made by the ones who make and finance the satellites and transponders. With a height of 500 km FM is probably the way to go. The dopper shift is large. It may be a bad choice for a linear transponder unless you assume that everyone are using full doppler tracking :-) Sumbandilasat it a very good satellite for operators working portable or mobile. The downlink is strong and it will be better to use it once things settle down. Every time we have a new satellite we have very many wanting to try it out. I think we should say thank you to our friends in SA for a new one. 73 OZ1MY Ib ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] Re: SO-67 over Europe thanks for test
Hi Roger and the -bb, >From memory it takes up less than 12.5 kHz which is the channel spacing on 2 meters (In Region 1 at least). Frequency deviation like 2.5 kHz (old 3.5 kHz and even some have 5 kHz deviation). It is the frequency deviation that is a the issue with SO-67 (I think). If you run too high deviation on the uplink the LF to the transmitter will make it deviate too much. Even for a normal (old) setting on the receive side. The Carson rule says: Signal Bandwidth = 2 times (Deviation + modulation frequency). Hi all, SO-67 worked great over Europe this morning. The downlink signal is the largest I have seen for years :-) I used FMN with mike gain turned down. That is far the best way to work the uplink. [amsat-bb] FM satellite operations again again over Europe
Hi all in Europe, It is obviously about time to repeate a few good points about operating via the FM repeater satellites. 1. Do not transmit if you can not hear it 2. When the satellite is busy - limit the number of QSO's to ONE 3. Do not call over an ongoing QSO 4. A valid QSO just needs the call and the report 5. Give way to weak stations like /p and /m 6. Allow DX-peditions to make as many QSO's as there are callers That was the short version :-) I have a long version in English, Italian, Russian, Spanish and French. I can send it to you if you want it. Could use a few other languages like Greek, Polish and others. It would be nice if you can get it in your national journals. Hi -bb, I do not know if I speak for a large number of receivers from the amsat - bb - but it is sometimes difficult to read and understand the "finer" details of such a conversation as has taken place over the last days. That is when our first language is not English/American. It started with John's e-mail, which was not easy to understand in any other way than a large criticism of the way AMSAT is run these days. May be it looks different for people with a better mastering of English - but to me it appeared very negative and non constructive. If there are mistakes on the homepage - why not just point that out, and that is it ? Criticism can be positive and constructive and lead to improvements for the better of AMSAT worldwide - but unfortunately also to the opposite. Please (all) try to be constructive and positive. I think most of us will appreciate that :-) Hope this e-mail is understandable. My native language is Danish. 73 OZ1MY Ib ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Hi Jim, I use the same setup - but for analog uplink. Antennas are two 19 turn helix stacked about 2 wavelength above one another. The combined gain is 18 dBiC. That works most of the time - but EIRP is a bit low when AO-51 is at 3000 km range. For the digital uplink I think you need more EIRP. [amsat-bb] Re: Arrow Antennas twist or not
Hi all, I think we need some clarification. Which satellite(s)are we talking about, when receiving with the ARROWS antenna ? The ARROW antenna are linearly polarised. What latitude is your QTH ? Regarding satellites - some have linear polarisation - some have circular polarisation. AO-51 has Right Hand Circular Polarisation on the "normal" repeater downlink (435.300 MHz), SO-50 has linear polarisation - the same applies to AO-27. The satellites attitude are stabilised with permanet magnets. This may give different results depending upon where you are. Here in Copenhagen it is a great advantage to "twist" the ARROWS antenna to improve the downlink signal from AO-27. We are close to the North Pole (hi) Everyone may be right :-) 73 OZ1MY Ib - Original Message - From: "Roger Kolakowski" To: "Clint Bradford" ; Sent: Sunday, August 16, 2009 11:34 PM Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: Arrow Antennas > I will say that I can improve my 437 reception by rotating the beam...I also > have gotten better signals by aiming the beam at a point on the ground 100 > feet away... > > Why criticize? [amsat-bb] Messages on the report page
Hi all, Please do not take this too serious. Right now I see a report on: http://oscar.dcarr.org saying that the crew is active on AO-7 in mode-A ? In my head I see small green men/women manning AO-7 :-) I just wanted to remind you about the possibility to report on that page. I did not put the small green men/women report up myself. 73 OZ1MY Ib ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] Re: true duplex radios
Hi Martin and other AMSAT'ers, This is a bit beside the subject but I seemed to recall that OSCAR-III was running full duplex in the 2 metre band: http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/satellites/satInfo.php?satID=26&retURL=satellites/all_oscars.php That is not on the same frequency - but the same band. If you look at some systems like the Marisat system or some of the scientific satellites in the 2 GHz band it is the same. To return to the subject I hope someone will gather all the information about full duplex transceivers that have been on the amsat-bb during the last days. 73 OZ1MY Ib - Original Message - From: "Martin" Cc: Sent: Tuesday, June 02, 2009 9:02 PM Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: true duplex radios Hi Jim and others. For ordinary Repeaters the Rx/Tx in the same band is mandatory. But just think of the filtering needed for TX'ing lots og watts just 600kHz away from your Rx-frq. This is also the reason why most repeaters (at least that I know of) uses really big cavity-filters. But for Rx/Tx on the same frequency - Forget it. What would be the purpose anyway? In my terms, a full-duplex radio is a radio that listens on one band, whilst transmitting on another.
