[amsat-bb] Re: FO29 and Kenwood TH-F6A

2012-01-04 Thread Pedro A. Perez

Sure!

I´ve worked very low passes (5º and less) using a TH-F7E and a CJU antenna
(even a dual band whip). Lots of transatlantic QSOs from mobile. My F7E is
quite sensitive, but the bandwith is somewhat wide for SSB:

I even used it for the AO-40 downlink in my mobile setup (glory days!!!):

Glad to hear that FO29 is back-now to get on it! Has anyone tried using a
Kenwood TH-F6A HT to receive FO29, since it does receive SSB? I would be
hooking it to an external antenna. Is it sensitive enough on SSB to hear
the satellite? The QST review shows its sensitivity is a little down on
HF and 6m SSB.

Good to hear FO29 back operating over the US!

Lets not forget that our flying friends are fragile and we need to keep
looking to the future and the need for replacements.

We may get another miracle and have one of the crippled birds come back
to life in the future, but do we really want to depend on chance?

This is a hobby and we will always be considered second banana when it
comes to getting help to fund a launch.
Write someone, call someone, offer to help or heaven forbid try and find
an extra dollar or two to donate.

I don't know where best to use anyone's talents or their monies but I do
know this, if we do nothing there won't be someone come along and say,
we need an amateur satellite, lets launch one! We need to take the
initiative and get another satellite on the launch pad and then beg,
borrow or steal a ride into space.

A very Happy New Year to everyone and lets get behind some of these
satellites and find a way to get them launched!

[amsat-bb] Re: Active FM Sats

2011-07-05 Thread Pedro A. Perez
There is an easy way to work linear birds from mobile. All you need is a
single band SSB mobile radio (FT-857, FT-897, etc), a portable SSB receiver
(TH-F6, etc.) and very simple antennas for the downlink (like the CJU for
mode J, 1/4 whip for mode B, etc):

http://eb4dka.laserenadigital.com/Amateur%20Satellite%20Articles/FO29_MOBILE.pdf

http://eb4dka.laserenadigital.com/Videos%20AMSAT/VIDEO_EB4DKA%20via%20FO29%20desde%20movil.html

I´ve made hundred of QSOs via FO-29 using this little station. It also works
nice on FM birds.

Pedro EB4DKA
http://eb4dka.laserenadigital.com

Show me an all-mode HT that retails for the same sort of price and is the
same sort of size as an FM HT and I might be interested. Otherwise, to
get UHF and VHF SSB I'm stuck with an inconveniently large radio which is
only really useful for the twenty minutes a day that a satellite is
 overhead.

Not to mention the difficulty involved in tuning the radio and aiming the
antenna. Doesn't the Doppler shift mean you need to constantly retune?
How do you manage to do that, key the mike and point the aerial, *and*
have enough brainpower left to make a contact?

[amsat-bb] Re: TH-F6A tip request

2011-02-03 Thread Pedro A. Perez
Hello Scott and all,

I've used my TH-F7E (european version of the TH-F6A) to work satellites in
many ways:

-As a portable HT station for the FM birds using either an AL-800 telecoping
whip or a dual-band beam antenna (Arrow, IOio...). Although full-duplex is
the best way to go, You can work fine using half-duplex. See video for
details:
http://eb4dka.laserenadigital.com/Videos%20AMSAT/VIDEO_EB4DKA%20portable%20via%20AO27.html

-As the receiver side of my mobile station using a CJU antenna to work FM
and SSB birds (FO-29, HO-68). I use an old Kenwood TM-255 all mode VHF
transceiver and a 1/4 wave mag mount VHF whip for the uplink. This setup
allows me to work full-duplex. See video for details:
http://eb4dka.laserenadigital.com/Videos%20AMSAT/VIDEO_EB4DKA%20via%20FO29%20desde%20movil.html

-As IF receiver for my AO-40 base (and mobile!) station:
http://eb4dka.laserenadigital.com/Videos%20AMSAT/VIDEO_Kenwood%20THF7%20recibiendo%20el%20AO40.html
http://eb4dka.laserenadigital.com/Imagenes/EB4DKA_AO40_MOBILE.jpg

I found the B receiver as sensitive as A receiver in FM. In SSB I've
compared it with a TS-790 and a PCR-1000 and the sensitivity is almost
equal. The big downside is the bandwith filters in SSB (they're pretty
wide), but you can work quite well if you stay away strong adjacent
stations.

Just my two cents...

 Hi Scott,

I haven't used my F6 much for satellites (my D7 is better, but mostly I
use my FT-736r. Warm, in side the shack.

The F6 is an interesting beast. I have used it with an after-market
speaker mike, the kind that clips over your ear and has a short boom for
mike pickup. It works ok, I suppose. The audio volume (from the mike
pickup) wasn't all that good. It's kind of short, and as I don't like
talking loudly into thin air, I kind of cup my hand over the boom and
mouth, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of it. Also the VOX didn't
work, and I think one of the PTT buttons (the one on the speaker mike
cord, or maybe the one on the rig itself, would key up the rig but no
audio would come through. I just use the other one. The volume in the
 ear piece itself is fine.

You're going to ask me what the make/model is, and I really don't recall.
It was from one of those vendors you see at swap mets year after year.
Nothing is written on the unit itself.

Fortunately, one of the wires got run over by something and it's in need
of repair. Instead of doing that, I picked up a Pryme SPM-301B at a
recent club white elephant sale. Seems to work in a quick smoke test,
but I don't have any on-air results yet. The ear bud doesn't clip over the
ear like the other one does, so I'm concerned it might keep falling out,
 but the price was right.

The F6 itself, at least mine, is somewhat deaf on the B side. If you're
on an FM bird, use A for receive, and if you want to transmit, do that
on B. For SSB/CW, you will have to use the B side, of course. Note
that it is a half-duplex rig, so you will not be able to hear yourself
without a second radio. Also, the B side is pretty wide banded and weakly
filtered, so you're going to get some imaging effects and intermod in
 high RF areas.

If you haven't yet, do invest in some sort of protective cover for the
keys. The lettering on mine is almost totally gone, just from sitting in
the side pocket of my backpack/laptop case.

If you find, one day, that the rig doesn't power up, take the battery off
and give the two spring power clips a little tug. Mine seem to not make
 good contact sometimes.

That's all I can think of, off the top of my head. Definitely a cute
little rig, with lots of uses. The B side's wide range and SSB/CW
capability makes it a portable instrument, an IF receiver (for on-roof
tuneup of my AO-40 downlink), and the AM/FM radio comes in handy from time
to time. Once I even checked into the regional SSB Net on 2 meters,
receiving SSB on B, and using the PTT on A for crude CW. (Hey, it
worked!) Pity we can't listen to TV-audio anymore. The Li-Ion battery
has very little self-discharge, so it's always ready to go.

 Enjoy,

 Greg KO6TH

 Hi y'all,

AMSAT will have a booth at the Tampabay Hamfest coming up on December
4th in Palmetto, Florida. We also will be doing 90 minutes of
presentations on satellites and ARISS during a forum on Saturday. Please
come by to pick up the latest AMSAT gear, learn about ARISSat-1, FOX,
and other projects, make a donation, or join or renew your AMSAT
 membership.

This year I am going to try something new. For each donation of $25 or
more, or each membership or renewal, I will personally provide the parts
and help assembling an antenna for operating the satellites. We will be
building a version of the CJU antenna in the booth, which is a small but
very effective antenna to use with an HT to copy the Mode J satellites.
Using the CJU and an HT, and the 2m radio in your car, the Mode J
satellites are easy to use. Email me ahead of time for details or to
 RSVP for this offer.

Please forward to any interested parties or lists.

these conditions and max sat elevation for me was 11 degrees. My working
conditions was similar to these:

http://eb4dka.laserenadigital.com/Videos%20AMSAT/VIDEO_EB4DKA%20via%20FO29%20desde%20movil.html

The only difference was that the F6 and the CJU was inside with the doors
and windows closed.
Many many stations trying to reach the sat.

Thank you AMSAT CHINA for your wonderful present!!!

 Hi all,
Can confirm Christians report. CW beacon on.
Had to go down on the downlink frequency. To start with
 - 600 Hz when using USB.
Had to follow down during the pass until TCA, then up again.
Used an additional - 2.1 kHz at TCA.
Keps may be a little off.
 Nominel published frequency 435.790 MHz.

 Congratulation to AMSAT-China

[amsat-bb] Re: Another satellite-receiver option

2009-06-08 Thread Pedro A. Perez
I usually work the FO-29 using a TH-F6 as the downlink receiver from mobile.

Subject: [amsat-bb] Another satellite-receiver option

 Hey everyone,

Over the weekend, I had a chance to do some more testing and
experimenting – this time, with a Kenwood TH-F6A HT. My sincere thanks to
Ed, N4ALE, who loaned me his TH-F6A for the weekend. I picked it up Friday
afternoon and returned it Sunday afternoon, giving it a pretty good
workout in the interim – well, part of it.

I can’t tell you how it performs on AO-27, AO-51 and SO-50 because I never
tried it with any of our FM satellites. In fact, I never keyed the radio’s
transmitter. Instead, I focused on its receiver.

The TH-F6A proved to be a capable receiver for use on AO-7, FO-29 and
VO-52. If you have an all-mode radio that will operate in CW and SSB on
the UHF and VHF bands, you can use the HT as your receiver for a
full-duplex station that will work our linear-transponder satellites. For
the record, I believe the current-production all-mode transceivers that
are NOT full duplex include two Icom models (IC-706MKIIG and IC-7000) and
three Yaesu models (FT-817ND, FT-857D and FT-897D). Anyone with one of
these rigs and the Kenwood can do what I did last weekend. Just add
antennas, or a duplexer and a dual-band antenna. There are plenty of
workable options, including a good number of homebrew antenna designs to
 consider.

I started out Friday evening just listening because I discovered I needed
an adapter to connect my headphones to the receiver jack on the radio,
which takes a 2.5 mm connector. Full-duplex contacts in SSB wouldn’t
happen until I had that, so I connected my Elk and configured the radio’s
B-Band to receive SSB in the 2 meter and 70 cm pass bands. It’s easy to
set up, and the fine-tuning feature permits tuning steps in CW or SSB as
low as 33 Hz. I chose 100 Hz, which worked well. Switching from CW to SSB
took only a few seconds. Through the evening, I copied AO-7 on multiple
passes to the east and west of my location, and had reception below 4
degrees at the end of the passes, which was encouraging.

Just before 03:00 UTC Friday evening, I had a VO-52 pass that reached a
maximum elevation of about 70 degrees here. I copied practically the whole
pass, hearing K8YSE work AA5PK and KB1PVH, and also clearly copying CW
from W8IJ. Here’s the fun part about that pass – I was standing in my
driveway, using a Diamond SRH-789 telescoping whip for an antenna. Having
the ability to copy pretty much the whole pass with just a whip helped me
to see that the TH-F6A probably would do OK as a satellite receiver.

After picking up the headphone adapter I needed Saturday morning, I
started working passes. Using an SMA-to-SO239 adapter, I connected the HT
to the Elk using a Diamond duplexer. I used either a Yaesu FT-857D or a
Yaesu FT-817ND as my transmit radio. The earliest afternoon pass of AO-7
hit 3.8 degrees maximum elevation here, but I heard my CW signal and
called CQ a few times with no answer. The next pass of AO-7 was well over
30 degrees here, also to my east. I worked N3TE in CW, then switched to
SSB and moved up the pass band for a voice contact with K3SZH. By then,
AO-7 was descending to my north, so I switched back to CW and started
calling CQ – primarily to see how long I could hear myself through the HT
on the downlink. I was thrilled when K4YYL called me. When we finished
that contact, AO-7 was at 2.6 degrees elevation according to the computer.

I should mention here that I was manually tuning for Doppler throughout
the weekend, which also gave me a chance to use various software packages
as my “guides” for finding myself at the start of a pass. Ham Radio
Deluxe’s Satellite Tracker, Orbitron and SatPC 32 all proved very helpful.
After launching one of the programs and getting the Doppler tuning on
screen, I just followed their lead and found myself quickly, then stayed
where I needed to be – evening tuning up and down the pass band to call
 others I heard.

On the next pass of AO-7 (the last of Saturday evening for me), I worked
K4YYL again – this time in SSB, and this time using an FT-817ND at 5 watts
out for my transmitter. Think about that – a fully functional all-mode
satellite station that I could fit in a day pack with room to spare!

FO-29 later Saturday evening was frustrating only inasmuch as there weren’t
many folks around. The first pass here hit less than 20 degrees maximum
elevation to my east, and I called CQ in CW without a contact. The next
pass was about 70 degrees maximum elevation, and I talked to myself for
 the first 2/3 of the
