[amsat-bb] Astronomy AZ/EL mount for radio use

2010-05-22 Thread R. Chastain
Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone has thought of using the Ioptron Mini Tower cube
telescope mount as an AZ/EL rotor for small antenna's?

I'm not talking about a permanent installation, but more of a portable setup.

The main concerns I can think of are...

1..The slewing rate not being fast enough to track LEO (Low Earth Orbiting)
satellites.

2..The antenna's having too much wind load on the mount. Weight shouldn't be
much of a problem with smallish antenna's.

3..Finding satellite tracking software compatible with the ASCOM proticol.

Any thoughts

Thanks,
Rod

[amsat-bb] For sell: Kenwood TS-790A with 1.2ghz and extras

2009-08-25 Thread R. Chastain
Hi all,

I'm selling my Kenwood TS-790A with 1.2ghz module, voice module, matching SP-31
external speaker, and (NIB) IF-232 computer module.
I'm basically selling most of my gear due to failing health.

Great full duplex satellite rig!

I have the original box for the radio but I'm not sure if I have the speaker
box.
I do have the manual but it's a bit dog eared from use.

Sorry, but I will not seperate the package.

Cosmetically, I would rate the radio an 8+ on a scale of 10 only because of a
very small scratch on the far right side of the display. If you didn't know it
was there you wouldn't know it. It's really not worth mentioning but I try to
decribe everything the best I can.
Also the plastic carrying handle on the side has been romoved by a previous
owner.
The screws are still there but the handle has been removed.

Electrically, the radio is a 10. NO problems whatsoever. It meets or exceeds
all manufacturers ratings.

Will sell all for $1300.00 plus shipping.

Thanks for looking,
RoD

[amsat-bb] Re: FT-736R won't send CW

2009-07-07 Thread R. Chastain

I know it's a simple anwser but make sure the CW plug is wired the same.
It might be a stereo plug and wired differently for the 736R and the 767.

[amsat-bb] Re: Antenna Question

2009-07-04 Thread R. Chastain

Oh My! Somebody else has my warped sence of humor:-) Just ask my granddaughter.
I goof with her all the time with stuff like this.
Like when she asks to get on the computer and I tell her she will break it if
she does:-)

[amsat-bb] For sell...M2 NIB 436CP42UG Antenna

2009-07-01 Thread R. Chastain

Hi all,
I guess I better start off with saying the box is missing in action.:-)
The antenna has never been built and all of the small parts, phasing harness,
ECT... are still in the factory sealed bags.

The reason the box is missing is because I unboxed it the day I got it and
the grandkids decided the box would be a fun toy. Scratch one box.
Other than the M2 box, the antenna is as mint as they get. Even the straps
holding the elements and boom pieces have never been removed.

I will sell for $300.00 plus shipping.

Thanks,
RoD

[amsat-bb] Re: Way-OT: Re: Full Duplex HT's (Howard Kowall) (Ben Jackson)

2009-06-10 Thread R. Chastain
I disagree. Since amateur radio operators can build their gear, ANY radio can
be used so long as it's spectral purity and power output are within the
established limits. (At least here in the USA)

The original post described a commercial HT ... operating WAY OUT of
the 2M and 440 amateur bands. For marketing and sales within the
United States, FCC certification is required.

Do people purchase non-FCC-certified commercial rigs and use them on
the amateur bands? Yes.

Is it legal to do so? No.

CTCSS/PL encode is built in so getting into tone activated systems is a snap.
