[amsat-bb] AMSAT bb
Glen, I see you have been sucessful in posting to the AMSAT BB. I have made several attempts to post a question I have about the old track box but it never appears. I have used amsat-bb@amsat.org. All indications are it goes out, doesn't appear in the undeliverable box but nothing on the daily list of messages. Used the address that worked for years in my address book, typed it by hand uppercase, lower case and it just disappears into a black hole. Used to have no problem but since things changed on the bb awhile back no luck. Any help?? 73 Tom K8TL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] VUCC Awards
I, of course, have a few comments. While I'm not much in favor of an expansion, the ARRL is having enough problems administering the awards they all ready offer. I would suggest you pattern any expansion along the lines of the DXCC Challange, total of band grids. The second thought would be a multiplier for the shorter wave lengths. Lastly what about the bands such as 70 mhz which are not international allocations. Tom K8TL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] AMSAT needs volunteers ???
Over the past half century I responded several times to AMSAT’s call for volunteers and never heard back from them. I was happy to hear from my son when he volunteered his software talents to AMSAT and told me that they had asked when would be a good time to contact him. His job title is Software Engineer with over 30 years experience, a number of published articles and winner of a number of design contests. He is also comfortable with hardware and firmware. If I mention a piece of hardware or software that I wish was a available in my ham shack it is usually available the next time he visits. Oh by the way I see AMSAT is still looking for a software guy, they never followed up on their request of when they could contact him. They sure blew an opportunity there. [amsat-bb] Max DX via FO-29
This morning I worked Jari OH2FQV in KP20Mmf. He thinks that the 7170 KM distance may be a record for FO-29. I have never paid much attention to the distance just count countries and grids and watch the foot print. After some checking I did notice that there was about a minute between his LOS and my AOS. [amsat-bb] FCD/SDR
I have the original FCD and the HF adapter. I ordered the new DC to light FCD a few hours before the December QST arrived. I have been playing with the dongle for a while. Mainly on the satellites but have also copied EME JT65 signals with it. On FO-29 and AO-7 it is fun to watch the whole band pass at once. In many cases some preselection is necessary (VHF repeater for the gas company is close by, if you don't tune it out the system is desensed). On the HF side, a simple LC tuner as a quantum improvement. SO after the QST article I stopped by Best Buy. Without the benefit of exotic test equipment a can say I can't tell the difference!! I hooked up the HF adapter, again can't tell the difference. Now all I need is a computer controlled VFO!! 73 Merry Christmas and HNY Tom K8TL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] IRC Stamps
I gave up on IRC's over a decade ago. The last batch I purchased via mail from the local post office. They always had a fit when I went to the counter, I held up the line while they stamped them. The last batch were stamped on the wrong side, when I took them back they, at first refused to refund my money or replace them, the clerk said once stamped on that side they were worth only one domestic airmail stamp. Got really bent out of shape when they told me some I had were out of date, they were carefully marked No Expiration Used to buy at least one sheet of each commerative as it was released (starting in the late 50's). By the 80's they were releasing commeratives at a rate that made the European micro states look like pikers. Not long ago I decided to sell off a lot of them. Most of the offers were less than face value. So I have been using them for postage (now that sure doesn't help the post office out of its current problems). In The late 1990's I stopped at Bill Plumb's booth at the Dayton Hamvention and purchased two of his stamps in an attempt to get two outstanding cards. Got both cards in a few weeks and have been using his stamps ever since, in most cases the country stamp was cheaper than an IRC. Returns are over 90% Tom K8TL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] More FCD
My FCD receives as well as my IC-910. At present I am using it mainly as a spectrum analyzer. On SO-52 you can see the whole band pass plus the beacon. It is interesting to note the beacon level versus most of the signals in the pass band. Also I can visually copy the CW from the beacon and other stations by watching the water fall. I did make a few contacts from the patio using the FCD, TH-F8 and arrow. One of these days I'll figure out how to make these posts from the BB page. Tom K8TL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] U-110
Didn't get my two cents worth in on the U-110 (fixing antennas after wind storm) The articles had to be in the early '80's. Used out of the box as elevation. Was getting serious about the mods when the KenPro came out so they are still sitting on the shelf. My records show I got the KenPro in '83!! Tom K8TL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] IC910 Options
Still don't know how to answer direct but: I have the CW filter, It works but I have never needed it! Of course the 1.2 Ghz module hasn't been used since AO-40 died. I turn the 1.2 Ghz module on every once in a while to blow the cob webs out of my 2C39 amp. Also have the UT-106 module, not sure if it does much that is noticeable at this location. Only got the RX options for the main RX, couldn't anticipate needing the enhancements on both receivers at the same time. The CT-17 is real handy for interfacing the frequency tracking systems. In my opinion, if 1.2 GHz gets popular again there are better options than the internal module. Unless you got burnt on the price, the 910 is probable the best buy for satellite work around. You got everything but mode A and no bird on the ISS down link. 73 and see you on the birds, Tom K8TL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] IC-9100 Confirmations
Shopping for new rig: Does the 9100 do Classic mode A 2m up 10 M down? Received two answers from ICOM Yes and No! It seems to me that it will but I want to be sure. The recent review in QST said that the BA1 didn't support Satellite operation, is that true? Any one try it on EME? Thanks in advance. Tom K8TL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: G5500 Connector
Several years ago, due to corroded pins, I contacted Yaesu for a replacement (the male side). I decided while at it I would get a spare female. The price they quoted before shipping was $100 Plus I hard wired it!! Used same fix for the on off switch on the control box! K8TL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] IC910 Main/Sub
Pedro, For 9600B I connect PTT and TX data to the sub jack and receive audio to the Main Jack. This has worked fine for many satellites and several different TNC's. For 1200b I use the aux jack. This works fine for both satellite and simplex. Bom Gia and 73 Tom K8TL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] RAX-2 Qusetion
I have been monitoring 437.345 MHz. Today I found a bunch of frames from RAX-1. Since I can't find any current info on RAX-1 I wonder if RAX-2 is identifying as RAX-1. Haven't seen anything from FAST1 since Saturday evening. Never anything at 9600, thought maybe the 9600 might be broke on my end but the frames from RAX-1 were at 9600. ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author.
