[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 What a Ham Radio Achievement!

2011-08-04 Thread Harry Strahlendorf
Hi Gang,

I excitedly tuned my base station, connected to a dual band Ventenna on the
roof, to the downlink frequency of 145.950 mHZ this morning as I tracked ISS
on a pass over North America. I'm in Southern New Jersey. I was amazed to
be able to hear the initial greeting female voice from this special bird! On
the following pass I used a portable HT and Arrow Antenna out on the lawn
and copied ARISSat-1 5X9! Thanks to all who made this possible and all who
are helping us enjoy this wonderful hobby!

Sincerely & 73,
Harry ~ W3DNQ

[amsat-bb] Duplexer / 847 / Preamp Question

2009-07-27 Thread harry
Guys,

I want to use an FT-847 with a mast mounted SSB preamp and a single feedline
antenna (Cushcraft A270-10S) that I already have mounted on my tower.

Can I send the DC for the preamp up through the coax and still use a duplexer?

I have checked the continuity of a Comet CF-4160 duplexer and the 1.3-170MHz
side appears to be isolated from the 440 side.  Since there is direct
continuity on the 1.3-170MHz side of the duplexer I would run the DC for the
preamp up that "side."

I really don't want to blow up my 847 by doing something foolish so any
thoughts, cautions etc. welcomed.

[amsat-bb] Antennas: How High?

2009-07-11 Thread harry
Guys,

I want to upgrade from my hand held Arrow to something permanently mounted
outside with and Ele/ Az rotor.

I have a single story home with roof peak at about 22 feet.  I can easily mount
a 10' - 20' mast directly outside the shack anchored in concrete and bolted to
my roof eaves.

If I use two  masts sections I will get a net height of about 17' which means I
will be "looking" through my roof on the lower easterly orientated passes.
Gaining the additional height to completely clear the roof line will be
increasingly problematic.  How much should I be concerned about this, etc?

I'd like some real world feedback / suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

[amsat-bb] Elk Antenna ?

2009-06-03 Thread harry
Guys,

I want to mount the Elk dual band 144/440 antenna up on my 85' tower.

Can I get away with a fixed elevation of about 30 degrees and horizontal
polarization?

I recognize that this is a compromise, but I'd like to avoid the additional
complexity of dealing with an azimuth rotor.

Any thoughts appreciated.
