As I recall, I used a "Y" adapter coming out of the headphone jack.
One side to my earphones, the other to my digital recorder. Made
a quick note of my start and end of pass times. I later logged my
contacts from the recording based on how far into the pass our contact
took place.

Of course not, no more than writing it down would, but I think you know that.

PS If you want to avoid competing with others on satellite, may I suggest the
transponder satellites? Hope to hear you on soon.

I personally use a recorder to record my contacts via the birds. I have two
hands, one holding the antenna, the other the speaker mic, I'd need two more to
hold pen and paper. I'd think so long as the QSL is two way confirmed there's
no harm. Regardless how it's logged.

Would this apply to using a digital voice recorder also, in your opinion?

I operate handheld (using an Icom w32a and an Elk antenna) I'm unable to
write down ANY information during a contact.
I'd hate to think I'm somehow disqualified from an award because I listened
to my recordings to log my contacts after the pass is over.

The OP only missed the call by one character, and they sound similar. I'm
not sure what equipment both parties were using, but I remember having a
very hard time making out calls with my gear. Especially on AO-51 pileups.
One of the reasons I quit for awhile is I got tired of competing with the
"big guns".

I've been off the air for about a year now. I'm looking forward to getting
back on the birds.

[amsat-bb] Re: AO51 pass this evening 0039UT

2010-11-09 Thread Larry Teran
You are completely right Jerry, an exchange of call signs and acknowledge from
both stations is needed for a successful QSO, but we need to keep in mind
that satellite contacts are performed on tight time period and the signals
from the birds are not all the time clear enough to copy 100%, as you
get experience working on the sats you familiarize with most of the every
day operators and then you began relaying on equipment like a recorder that
help you analyze the audio and if you were not able to copy the call at the
time you contacted that station you probably will have a better reception of
that station on another QSO going on, but we all were inexperienced
operators once and missed a couple of call because of that reason, a little
help is always of great support and we all can give new station the
opportunity to enjoy this wonderful hobby.

In my opinion you are 100% correct. Make a second contact to make it legit. If
you just want to find the right call for your own reasons or to arrange another
contact, cool. If you want to use the busted QSO for an award, not cool.
