Samsung says their Android phone won't be out until the second half of next
year. I don't think that could possibly have been an Android phone you were
seeing. In addition, the CEO of Sprint has publicly stated, within the past
month, that he didn't think that Android was usable on their network at this
point.

I did a factory reset on my phone (clearing out the rom) this did not

what format does the card need to be reformatted to

no. When I inserted the factory card, the camera took a picture
fine. BTW I should have mentioned on the original post that the
default android music app cannot find any of my songs even though, I
see them when I mount the phone via usb and I can browse them on the
phone with the third party Android File Manager 1.2.1 from the android
market. Also I can play videos on the phone from the sdcard with the
video player from the android market.

Whatever your problem with your Camera app is, permissions on the
/sdcard mount are not it. I have the same permissions, and my Camera app
works fine.

The only difference I see is that my /sdcard has a date of 2008-11-16
15:17, which is probably about when I transferred a file to it via DDMS.

Does the problem occur with the original 1GB card? Or any other card you
might have handy?

[android-beginners] android file permissions on the G1

2008-11-16 Thread solid

So I bought a G1 and everthing was awesome until today. Sometime
today one of the apps from the market screwed my environment up Yes, I
know this sounds crazy but hear me out. So I decided to use my camera
today and when I opened the camera app, It says "please insert an SD
card before using the camera". I have a 16 GB micro sd card in the
camera. And before anyone mentions it, my phone was not plugged into
anything at the time. So I then used the settings app to eject the
card. I reinserted the card and tried again. Same problem. When I do
the the sdcard settings, it says that my 16 GB card is mounted and
that there is 10 GB still available. So then I rebooted the phone.
Tried the camera again. Same problem. So then I decided to hit up
the terminal emulator and see what is going on.

I type "ls -l" and this is the file permissions on the sdcard
directory: d---rwxrwx system system   1969-12-31 19:00  sdcard

when I run chmod 777 sdcard I get "unable to chmod sdcard: Read-only
file system". Any ideas on how to fix this. I seem to be constrained
in that I cannot sudo to root. Is there a way I can fix this without
having to reset my whole phone?

[android-beginners] Customized ListView

2008-11-16 Thread Peter Burger

Hi folks,

I am a complete newbie to android so I guess this group is just the
right one for me to start with :-)

I have the following problem. I have written my own ArrayAdapter class
which cutomizes a ListView. More precisely I would like to have a list
which contains a horizontal LinearLayout with one TextView and a
ImageView per row. I have tried to achieve this by using the attached
code which I created by following this tutorial
http://lbellonda.blogspot.com/2007/12/android-how-to-show-items-with.html

I have a class that extends ListActivity and looks like this:

public class DDboard extends ListActivity{

@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {

try{
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.dd_list);

String[] string1 = new String[2];
string1[0] = "Description 1";
string1[1] = "green";

String[] string2 = new String[2];
string1[0] = ""Description 2";
string1[1] = "yellow";

String[] string3 = new String[2];
string1[0] = ""Description 3";
string1[1] = "red";

ArrayList dAL = new ArrayList();

dAL.add(string1);
dAL.add(string2);
dAL.add(string3);

DArrayAdapter daa = new DArrayAdapter(this, dAL);
setListAdapter(daa);

}catch(Exception e){
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
}

Within this class, as you can see, I do instantiate DArrayAdapter and
sending the current context and my ArrayList. Depending on what is in
[1] of the String array I would like to place different images in my
ImageView. But have a look at that later.

DArrayAdapter looks like this:

public class DArrayAdapter extends ArrayAdapter{

public DArrayAdapter(Context context, List dds) {
super(context, R.layout.dd_row, dds);
}

@Override
public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent){
String[] stringArray = (String[]) getItem(position);
DDListRow ddlr = new DDListRow(super.getContext(), stringArray);
return ddlr;
}
}

And DDListRow, which extends LinearLayout looks like this:

public class DemandDashboardListRow extends LinearLayout {

//String Title="";
TextView mText;
ImageView mView;

public DDListRow(Context context, String[] dd) {
super(context);

this.setOrientation(HORIZONTAL);
this.setLayoutParams(new

[android-beginners] Re: Can't build HelloAndroid on debian edge !

2008-11-16 Thread lee

A more heavy handed approach for those of you that don't need gcj for
anything is to completely remove all packages
related to gcj in two commands. Here's the poetry. Caveat emptor if
you don't understand it.

# aptitude search gcj | egrep "^i.+" | awk '{print $2}' | tr '\n' ' '
> gcj_must_die.list
# cat gcj_must_die.list | xargs aptitude remove -y
# rm -rf ~/.android/*

hello world should now build assuming you have the Sun java packages
installed properly as per the tutorial.

[android-beginners] Gmail push email long delay - not really push email?

2008-11-16 Thread d.brophy

Just picked up a G1 and I'm really disappointed in the delay I get
when receiving email.

I seem to be waiting up to 2 minutes for the G1 to beep after clicking
the send button. I'm sending the email from the Gmail web client on my
PC to myself, so there shouldn't be any delay as the mail sends across
the internet...

I tested a blackberry last year, and the emails always arrived within
5 seconds of hitting the send button.

This makes me think either there's a problem with the Gmail push
servers, or it's not using true Blackberry-style push email.

What delays are you guys getting?

p.s. I'm in the UK, and I'm using a "Google Apps for your domain"
Gmail account.

[android-beginners] Re: How to get a G1 whithout a suscription plan?

2008-11-16 Thread blu

Can someone tell me about the unlock.
Is is possible to have a bad unlock?
I mean, the unlock key provided by T-Mobile and the unlock key
provided by online shops, are the the same.

Once unlocked, could i possibly lose features if I had unlocked it
using the key code from another source other that T-Mobile? Just
wondering how unlock works here.

Cheers!

[android-beginners] Customized ListView

2008-11-16 Thread peter0601

Hi folks,

I am a complete newbie to android so I guess this group is just the
right one for me to start with :-)

Sorry if that message appears twice. I just did not get a copy of my
first try.

I have the following problem. I have written my own ArrayAdapter class
which cutomizes a ListView. More precisely I would like to have a list
which contains a horizontal LinearLayout with one TextView and a
ImageView per row. I have tried to achieve this by using the attached
code which I created by following this tutorial
http://lbellonda.blogspot.com/2007/12/android-how-to-show-items-with.html

I have a class that extends ListActivity and looks like this:

public class DDboard extends ListActivity{

   @Override
   public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
 try{
   super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
   setContentView(R.layout.dd_list);
 String[] string1 = new String[2];
   string1[0] = "Description 1";
   string1[1] = "green";
 String[] string2 = new String[2];
   string1[0] = ""Description 2";
   string1[1] = "yellow";
 String[] string3 = new String[2];
   string1[0] = ""Description 3";
   string1[1] = "red";
 ArrayList dAL = new ArrayList();
 dAL.add(string1);
   dAL.add(string2);
   dAL.add(string3);
 DArrayAdapter daa = new DArrayAdapter(this, dAL);
   setListAdapter(daa);
 }catch(Exception e){
   e.printStackTrace();
   }
   }
}

Within this class, as you can see, I do instantiate DArrayAdapter and
sending the current context and my ArrayList. Depending on what is in
[1] of the String array I would like to place different images in my
ImageView. But have a look at that later.

DArrayAdapter looks like this:

public class DArrayAdapter extends ArrayAdapter{

   public DArrayAdapter(Context context, List dds) {
   super(context, R.layout.dd_row, dds);
   }
 @Override
   public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup
parent){
   String[] stringArray = (String[]) getItem(position);
   DDListRow ddlr = new DDListRow(super.getContext(),
stringArray);
   return ddlr;
   }
}

And DDListRow, which extends LinearLayout looks like this:

public class DemandDashboardListRow extends LinearLayout {

   //String Title="";
   TextView mText;
   ImageView mView;
 public DDListRow(Context context, String[] dd) {
   super(context);
 this.setOrientation(HORIZONTAL);
   this.setLayoutParams(new LinearLayout.LayoutParams
(LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT));
 mText = new TextView(context);
   mText.setLayoutParams(new LinearLayout.LayoutParams
(LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT));
   addView(mText);
   setText(dd[0]);
 mView = new ImageView(context);
   mView.setLayoutParams(new LinearLayout.LayoutParams
(LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT));
 if (demand[1].equals("red")){
   mView.setImageResource(R.drawable.android_red);
   }
   if (demand[1].equals("yellow")){
   mView.setImageResource(R.drawable.android_yellow);
   }
   if (demand[1].equals("green")){
   mView.setImageResource(R.drawable.android_green);
   }
   addView(mView);
   }
   public void setText(String text)
   {
   mText.setText(text);
   }
}

I hope this is at least not complete BS but if I run the programm I
get a ClassCastException at the method call "setListAdapter(daa);" in
the ListActivity class. And to be honest, I don't have a clue what I
am doing wrong. The res/layout files are created as described in the
well-known notepad tutorial but I would post them immediately if they

You specifically have told Android you want all those in the launcher, via:

There should only be one MAIN in general (I think), and if you don't
want them all on the launcher, only use the LAUNCHER with the
appropriate one(s).

This is more about the G1 specifically rather than about beginning
application development for Android, but I'll reply anyway.

Go to settings (press the menu key on the home screen), select "about
phone" (all the way at the bottom), scroll down to the last option
(build number). The latest builds are TC4-RC30 for US devices, and
TC5-RC8 (I think) for UK devices. If you've just activated your

update if one is necessary. Be patient.
