[android-beginners] Re: The use of Eclipse for android development

2008-12-09 Thread Xavier Ducrohet

One thing that the Eclipse ADT plug-in will provide you is automated workflow.

There's a wizard to create and export a project.
Custom editors will help you write some of those Android-specific XML
file. Not sure how to declare an Activity in your manifest? Just use
the editors, read a few tooltip, see what fields are available, then a
few clicks and you're done.
Much easier than reading the doc to figure out the name of the XML
nodes/attributes.

Same thing for debugging. Even the first time, with no prior setup,
this is as easy as choosing a menu option to start a "debug launch".

It amuses me to hear Faber mention he hasn't needed to use DDMS to debug yet :)
DDMS is pivotal to debug on Android. But the Eclipse plug-in embeds
DDMS and does all the dirty work for you. Using ADT is using DDMS, you
just don't know it.

In the end, except for the custom editors found only in ADT,
everything you do in Eclipse can be done with command line tools (or
at least non IDE tools).
- activityCreator to create a project skeleton and its build script
- Ant to build
- DDMS to help you connect a debugger (unfortunately DDMS is not a
command line tool at this point)
- Any Java debugger able to do remote debugging.

Some tools (traceview, hierarchyviewer, draw9path) are actually not
integrated in Eclipse at this point.
Even when they become integrated, the standalone versions will still exist.

Eclipse is certainly our preferred way (ie this is were we focus our
energy to create an all-in-one environment), but it is not our goal to
force developers to use Eclipse.

your best bet at this point would be to run a DNS cache on your machine that
reads your HOSTS file
then use the -dns-server option to make the emulated system connect to it.

[android-beginners] Re: Problems with HttpClient, HttpGet and HttpResponse ...

2008-12-09 Thread rustyventure

Looks like I answered my own question :)

I allowed Eclipse to auto correct my code, and it added a try - catch
routine:

HttpClient httpclient = new DefaultHttpClient();
HttpGet httpget = new HttpGet("http://www.google.com";);
try {
HttpResponse response = httpclient.execute(httpget);
} catch (ClientProtocolException e) {
// TODO Auto-generated catch block
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (IOException e) {
// TODO Auto-generated catch block
e.printStackTrace();
}

My code complies now, so I can go back to exploring :)

[android-beginners] Sqlite from activity & service

2008-12-09 Thread Cyril Jaquier

Hi all,

I have a service in my application that records values into an sqlite
database. The activity retrieves information from the service using an
aidl interface. Here is a schema:

activity <--> service <--> database

Is this the "standard way" to retrieve data from a sqlite database or
could I access the database from the activity too? Like this:

activity <--> database <--> service

How you guys would you do this?

Thank you and Regards,

Cyril

Unless you are well-versed in Java, XML, ANT and how this platform
integrates the above with resources and how tightly integrated all these
parts are, I'd say you would be a fool not to use Eclipse.

If you're familiar with Java ME or BREW, it might not be as painful for you.

Will I be losing out by using another editor (I use vi)?

I'm a vi(m) guy and I m loving Eclipse. I do screw up switching back and
forth between them (some things are just better in vi(m)) but I've gotten
used to it.

There are vi bindings for Eclipse, but I've not installed it yet.

> And what about debugging?

It's awesome. While the Perl debugger is very capable, I never realized how
much I missed a GUI debugger. There's also a scary looking hardware
debugger thingie call DDMS (IIRC) that looks pretty powerful but I've not
needed to use it yet.

And the Google App Engine plugin makes debugging GAE apps a breeze (no more
print statements scattered through your web app).

> Those using Eclipse, how well did you adapt to Eclipse
> and the android plugin?

I am a hard-core command line guy. I have come to love Eclipse. I would
have never been able to tackle and Android app without it; the plugin takes
care of much of the drudgery work so you can get to learning the framework
(which is a major chore in and of itself).

Use the Eclipse and the Android plugin. you can always go back to vi later
if it suits you, but I don't think it will.

[android-beginners] Run with Eclipse

2008-12-09 Thread v.beh...@gmx.de

Hello,I`m new with Eclipse and I have got some questions about it.
I`ve already installed Eclipse GANYMEDE with Android.
And on the page http://code.google.com/android/intro/hello-android.html
you can see how to make a Hello-Android project.
But if I edit HelloAndroid.java with this code :

package com.android.hello;

import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.widget.TextView;

public class HelloAndroid extends Activity {
   /** Called when the activity is first created. */
   @Override
   public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
   super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
   TextView tv = new TextView(this);
   tv.setText("Hello, Android");
   setContentView(tv);
   }
}

then there`s always an error massage,like this:

Your project contains error(s),please fix them before running your
application.

Does anyone konow why it`s so?

Please answer me!!!

Thank you in advance!

[android-beginners] programmatically send email with data file attachment

2008-12-09 Thread Genesio

Hello to everybody, i am writing a small program which creates a text
file on the external storage (microSD card).
Now i want to send this small file via email (asking the user which
account to use).

I read the sdk docs and I found that with an Intent and this action
(http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/content/
Intent.html#ACTION_SENDTO) I can write an email.
But I cannot find any EXTRA_ to specify an attachment.

I tried with EXTRA_STREAM and an open FileInputStream pointing to the
txt file, but when I see (for example) gmail popping out (basic email
writing works) there is no attachment in the "pre-built" email.

I know this is possible because I installed an application from the
market (Voice Recorder) that already does it.

I would want to reproduce its behaviour.

P.S. Another way to achieve my goal would be to upload via HTTP the
file to a webserver... maybe it's simpler? anyone can give me an
example or show me a JAVA library that implements this functionality??

Thank you
Genesio

[android-beginners] Android and Windows Host file

2008-12-09 Thread isisagate

I am trying to develop an Android app that connects to a tomcat web
service and want to be able to load it off my local machine.

In my host file on my windows dev machine I have the service's URL
defined and tomcat running, however when i try to load the page it
says it cannot find it. I read that the Android emulator is not setup
to use the host file. Is there a way I can get it to use the host
file, or add the url entry to android so it will connect to the server
hosted on the same machine the emulator is hosted on.

Any ideas?

Run "adb devices" from a command line. If you don't see the device listed,
you probably need to setup udev (at least under ubuntu) to have the usb
recognize.

Anyone knows a good link to the udev config needed for the g1? (There should

Yeah, Eclipse is pretty dense to learn, but that's because it does
just about everything. Good news is it's all there in the menus, so
if you poke around you can get the hang of it pretty quick. Well
worth it too... next time you need to rename a method that's accessed
all over the place, just look for "Refactor". You'll love it... ;-)

Thanks Ralf and Ian. I too use vi so it's good to know that it works
well for you. I've started using it yesterday and compiled and ran the
source demos fine. It sure seems like there's a lot of "stuff" in
eclipse to learn, though. I'm used to Smalltalk environment with its
integrated "everything". Eclipse seems the way to go, though. Guess
I'll start learning it. (sigh, yet another tool to learn...>

Thanks again!

[android-beginners] Re: The use of Eclipse for android development

2008-12-09 Thread Ian

Does vi:

* compile your code as you type it in
* highlight errors and give you two-click auto-fix
* auto-complete names of classes and methods in distant libraries
* show you the documentation for a function in a popup as soon as you
type the name
* run your code on the device
* let you stop the program and see variable states
* take screenshots off the device

etc and much much more.

Seriously, I've been a vi user (indeed addict) for 27 years, I
resisted the Emacs trend for as long as I could, but Eclipse is so
much more. It just takes care of an amazing amount of stuff that you
otherwise have to do by hand. You will simply be way more productive,
and spend your time thinking about the code instead of sifting through
compiler output dumps. Eclipse isn't perfect, but it's pretty darned
good, and Android is very well integrated into it.

(BTW, I'm using Europa, not Ganymede (the latest). Don't know if that
means anything, I'm running on a pre-release OS, and I found Europa
more stable.)

[android-beginners] Re: Problem with configuring ADT ("failed to get the required adt version from sdk")

2008-12-09 Thread Ralf

Sorry, not a clue. That's a eclipse install question, try on an eclipse forum.
For starters you might want to indicate which OS.

For the record, Eclipse IDE for Java Developers (85 MB) is good
enough, I don't need more than that for the android SDK.

Did you try the "getting started" guide at

See the section on eclipse install and the hello world one.

The SDK API doesn't make it possible to create new widgets for the home screen.

[android-beginners] Re: The use of Eclipse for android development

2008-12-09 Thread Ralf

Eclipse + ADT provides with a comfortable & customizable IDE with
integrated debugging. There are wizards to create new projects, export
apks and automatic deployment to your emulator or devices. There's a
specific "ddms" view to view log output and other debug properties.

You can do all of this using command-line tools. To compile using the
command line you need to use "ant", which means other Java IDEs can
invoke the ant target out of the box.

Some people program using Emacs or VI, so really anything goes.

Some say you could even use real player, although it might be easier
with some skills to use dd and a magnet.
