Actually I think the GPS uses the net to initialize data to find
satellites, to provide faster start times.

Does tmobile G1 provide this functionality if somebody dosent have the

Neither the carrier nor 3G has anything to do with GPS, AFAIK.

Sorry, I didnt copy-paste the right line. I meant you need the
android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION permission.

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/Manifest.permission.html#ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION

There are 2 location providers: fine location is GPS and coarse
location is cell-id.

[android-beginners] Re: Understanding onKeyDown

2009-04-23 Thread gganesh

hi Mark ,
Thanks for your reply ,
but still I'm not aware why, only when the press() is commented out
from onKeyDown() method
(i can say from logcat) ,the onKeyDown is invoked for every hit of the
appropriate key .When I run the program without commenting press()
from onKeyDown ,the call back method onKeyDown is called only once for
the very first-time hit on the key.why is this varied behavior.

On Apr 22, 5:42 pm, Mark Murphy mmur...@commonsware.com wrote:

appropriate key, the onKeyDown is not called ,I can say this from
logcat output.I could not guess the reason .

If I had to guess, I would say that the ListView is intercepting your
 KEYCODE_DPAD_CENTER events.

To prove this, try switching to some other key that ListView does not
handle itself. If you then get both events, that means my guess is correct.

[android-beginners] How to build a debuggable crosstool chain for android on linux_X86_64?

2009-04-23 Thread Hucheng Zhou
Hi @ll:
I've successfully build the crosstool chain for android on host
linux_x86_64 (gcc-4.4.0, binutils-2.19, new-lib-1.17.0, gdb-6.6, etc), but
the problem is that the installed gcc cannot find the corresponding header
files, even for simple stdio.h. Why? I use the tar-ball
of android-toolchain-20081019.
Another issue is how to build a debuggable cross gcc? Just set CFLAGS and
CXXFLAGS=-g3 -O0 -gdwarf-2? I want to do some development on gcc.
  Thanks in advance.

[android-beginners] distributing an app packaged with just emulator

2009-04-23 Thread tansaku

Hi All,

[I tried to post this message to android-developers, but it didn't
show up ...]

I was wondering if anyone has ever been able to distribute their app
in a bundle with an emulator?

The reason I want to do this is that I have some friends who don't
have android phones, but I'd like them to be able to play with my app
so that they can give me feedback. I've previously sent them screen
casts, but I'd really like them to be able to get interactive with the
app.

Now I could ask them to get all installed with the whole android
framework, eclipse etc,. but some of them are not so technical.
Ideally what I'd like to be able to do is create a package that is the
android emulator with my app and perhaps 1 or 2 other related apps pre-
installed, so that they can download it, open it and run it
interactively on their computers?

Has anyone ever tried this?

So far I found that I can run the emulator standalone, and I assume I
could probably send them just that and it would run. However the adb
tool is needed to install apps. I could send them that too, and ask
the to run an 'adb install myapp.apk' from the command line, but at
the moment I can't even seem to do that myself.

Running the emulator standalone, the adb tool can't seem to see it:

samuel-josephs-computer-2:tools samueljoseph$ sudo ./adb devices
List of devices attached

I just get no list of devices ...

I have previously used the adb tool to install apk files, but that is
after I had started the emulator from eclipse - of course even then I
always have to restart eclipse and the emulator two or three times
before I can get the connection (I am on OSX 10.5.6., eclipse
3.4.1) ...

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

CHEERS SAM

be apllied only for the square00 imageview. Somebody knows what's
wrong?

Iam Writing an Application in which i need to put all the system.out or
log.e logs into a file which will be generated in the phone system.

The following snippet was recently added to AndroidSnippets.org:

 http://www.androidsnippets.org/snippets/35/

I have not tried the technique demonstrated there, and it scares me
slightly, but it is probably worth trying.

You can also just pop open the /dev/log entry (assuming appropriate
permissions) and read it directly. The format is laid out in core/
include/cutils/logger.h:

struct logger_entry {
uint16_tlen;/* length of the payload */
uint16_t__pad; /* no matter what, we get 2 bytes of padding
*/
int32_t pid;/* generating process's pid */
int32_t tid;/* generating process's tid */
int32_t sec;/* seconds since Epoch */
int32_t nsec; /* nanoseconds */
charmsg[0]; /* the entry's payload */
};

The msg field has a one-byte priority, followed by the null-
terminated tag, followed by the message (which I don't think is null
terminated -- len - taglen - 1 is the message body length).

This sort of manipulation is pretty awkward in Java, and you still
have to format it nicely. But once you've got that written you can
apply whatever layout / filter rules you want.

If you only need System.out and System.err for *your* process, it's
easy enough to redirect them (and in fact this is what the Android
framework does to put them in the log file instead of stdout/stderr).

All three logs (/dev/log/{main,radio,events}) use the layout shown
above, but the contents of msg may vary (events is completely
different).

[android-beginners] distributing an app packaged with just emulator

2009-04-23 Thread Samuel Joseph

Hi All,

[Tried posting this through web interface but didn't show up ... here
goes via email ...]

I was wondering if anyone has ever been able to distribute their app in
a bundle with an emulator?

The reason I want to do this is that I have some friends who don't have
android phones, but I'd like them to be able to play with my app so that
they can give me feedback. I've previously sent them screen casts, but
I'd really like them to be able to get interactive with the app.

Now I could ask them to get all installed with the whole android
framework, eclipse etc,. but some of them are not so technical. Ideally
what I'd like to be able to do is create a package that is the android
emulator with my app and perhaps 1 or 2 other related apps
pre-installed, so that they can download it, open it and run it
interactively on their computers?

Has anyone ever tried this?

So far I found that I can run the emulator standalone, and I assume I
could probably send them just that and it would run. However the adb
tool is needed to install apps. I could send them that too, and ask the
to run an 'adb install myapp.apk' from the command line, but at the
moment I can't even seem to do that myself.

Running the emulator standalone, the adb tool can't seem to see it:

samuel-josephs-computer-2:tools samueljoseph$ sudo ./adb devices
List of devices attached

I just get no list of devices ...

I have previously used the adb tool to install apk files, but that is
after I had started the emulator from eclipse - of course even then I
always have to restart eclipse and the emulator two or three times
before I can get the connection (I am on OSX 10.5.6., eclipse 3.4.1) ...

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

CHEERS SAM

[android-beginners] Re: distributing an app packaged with just emulator

2009-04-23 Thread Jack Ha (T-Mobile USA)

If adb is not able to connect to the emulator, try sudo killall adb
first and then rerun you sudo adb ... command.

One suggestion is that you can place you app on a web server and your
friends should be able to download/install it via the emulator
browser. Of course doing this might expose your app to the outside
world.

Thanks for the info, Mark. This exactly answers my questions. I was
trying to modify the HTTP headers while using the webkit and it
appears that only the User-Agent is exposed via an API while the
HTTPClient setHeaders API is hidden in the webkit and not exposed via

If you are using HttpClient, yes.

If you are using URLConnection, I think so.

If you are using anything else (raw sockets, WebView, etc.), no.

And all of those assume we are talking about *your* application. There
is no means outside the firmware to modify the behavior of *other*
 applications' HTTP requests.

[android-beginners] Re: HelloGallery Example!!

2009-04-23 Thread Jack Ha (T-Mobile USA)

1. The gallery id being used in your layout file is not defined. Make
sure it is something like @+id/gallery.

2. sample_1.png image file is missing in res/drawable.

3. Theme is not declared in res/values/attrs.xml

I am implementing some of the examples given in the Dev Guide. I have
some generic issues in getting started and getting the code to work.
In the code given, Eclipse does not recognize

 **R.id.gallery***

Upon clicking the bulb on the left side for resolution, i get two
 options:-

 1. Create field 'id' in type ''R'.
 2. Create constant 'id' in type ''R'.

 *  R.drawable.sample_1

 1. Create field 'sample_1' in type 'drawable'.
 2. Create constant 'sample_1' in type 'drawable'.

 **android.R.styleable.Theme***

 No generic suggestions.

 ** android.R.styleable.Theme_galleryItemBackground**

 No generic suggestions.

I am unable to run the android application, since i have fix the bugs
 before running them.

For additional information, I have successfully done the installations
and the Hello Android along with some basic
 android programmes run absolutely fine.

Please, would some of the android experts help me in this regard
before i loose my motivation to work on android.

 Wannabe Android Programmer
