[android-developers] Say Hello to the Menu?

2012-07-24 Thread yvolk
As you may remember, several months ago Google developers published the
article "Say Goodbye to the Menu
Button"

preaching us to replace Android "Options menu" with "Action bar" always
visible to the User, and to forget about hardware Menu Button.
So far so good, I lived with this in my mind until recently I noticed that
brand new Jelly Bean interface made move in an opposite direction:
In the "Sync" screen of the "Accounts and Sync" an option to "Remove
Account" was moved from visible position of a "button" (not an Action Bar
though) to the invisible position in the good old Options menu (see "per
account settings in Jelly
Beans
").
Today I've noticed that latest version of the Chrome browser on my Android
4.0.4 device does actively use both Action Bar and Options Menu but for
DIFFERENT purposes.
Actually Action Bar is generally not shown (to free up screen estate) and
appears only after text selection on a page, presenting to the User
available "actions" with selected text. Cool but it's NOT "Good Bye to the
Menu Button".

Did the Android Developers' attitude to the Options Menu AND Menu Button
really changed since January?

[android-developers] About one of my app idea | Please share your thoughts.

2012-07-24 Thread Subin Sebastian
Hi Devs,

I'm here for some valuable suggestions from you people. I'm planning to
develop a book store app for Android,
something like iBooks for iPhone. But apart from normal text+image pages,
I'm planning to include simple animations,
audio background and touch events along with the content. This is to
provide a better reading experience to the users.
The base idea is to release books into this app as a paid in-app purchase.
Books as I mentioned contains text, images
animations, audio, and on touch events. I'm planning to use Urban Airship
as the backend.

In which direction I should go? Do you have some suggestions for me? Please
share your thoughts on this.

I'm guessing a service, even with a foreground notification, is going to be
considered to be in the background, right?

It's possible that this has already gotten me a few support messages from
people saying that a download isn't making progress. But there are so many
user errors and server side errors that I'm not sure, even now, if this is
one of the first questions I will ask.

On Galaxy Nexus, the phone wouldn't let me access this setting unless I set
a data limit (assuming I found the right setting), gave me some warnings,
and posted what I think is a persistent notification. This might be enough
to make a user aware, but you never know since many users don't know how to
find notifications (the secret pulldown).

In an activity, it does seem to make sense to note that data has been
blocked. For a batch download service, it seems like it would make sense to
check this at the very beginning and simply abort the operation, as this is
unlikely to change, unlike connectivity.

Re: [android-developers] Align ListView to the right

Hi, probably it is my problem not yours. I really appreciate you are trying
to help.

I am not looking into justification within the listview, but the listview
within the container (activity).

Here's my activity:

public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.list);

String[] songs = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.videos);
this.setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter(this, R.layout.item,
R.id.label, songs));
getListView().setDivider(null);
}

The list.xml is what listed above, containing the list view that I wish to
be align right to this activity, with a right margin of 100dp.

Thanks for all the help you are trying to give to me, I am just not sure
why I can't communicate this simple idea across to you (a list view on the
right of the screen).

Re: [android-developers] function for blending two colors?

2012-07-24 Thread bob
I was looking for something like this:

static int blend(int color1, int color2, float frac)
{
 int r1 = Color.red(color1);
int g1 = Color.green(color1);
int b1 = Color.blue(color1);
 int r2 = Color.red(color2);
int g2 = Color.green(color2);
int b2 = Color.blue(color2);
 int r3 = (int) (r1*(1.0f-frac) + r2*frac);
int g3 = (int) (g1*(1.0f-frac) + g2*frac);
int b3 = (int) (b1*(1.0f-frac) + b2*frac);
 return Color.rgb(r3, g3, b3);

}

Also… Anyone know why you would ever instantiate the Color class?

Re: [android-developers] Re: grey rectangle

2012-07-24 Thread Justin Anderson
There really is no way for adding a stroke to text... I believe you asked
about that in another post. To do that you would need to subclass
Button... And then you would need to do a whole lot of work in the onDraw()
method. I don't know if that would be worth the effort.

Even if you decide it is worth the effort, don't do anything in the
subclass relating to the background of the button... just the text.

 For each button state (normal, selected, pressed...) you can create a

 converting them into 9 patch files. Create a state

 Set that state list resource as background drawable resource on your

 If you want to make the label text look fancy, then you can play around

[android-developers] Re: PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK and Android 2.3.x

Why not try FULL_WAKE_LOCK?

If that doesn't work, put a breakpoint here:

this.wakeLock.release();

If the breakpoint gets hit, you know the lock was released.

The user presses BACK via the affordance in the system bar.

This is not necessary. The user can press BACK.

[android-developers] Preference menu navigation without physical buttons

2012-07-24 Thread billb
I have a simple app with a set of preferences for the user to select. I
have the preferences menu (using Preference fragments) that works, however,
what is the preferred method of providing navigation back to the app if
there are no physical buttons on the device.

I have added a "Return to Game" header, however, I'm now at a loss on how
to configure the intent to pop the preference menu off the stack and
therefore return to the game.

If I am headed in the wrong direction, please point me in the right one.

Using the below code the Preference appears in my settings menu, however,
when I click on the return to game preference (and thus starting the
intent) I get the following error in the debugger:

android.content.ActivityNotFoundException: No Activity found to handle
Intent { act=com.mycompany.myApp.PrefsActivity.GoBack }

Below is the code parts that I think will help you understand what I am up

Log.i("PREFERENCES", "Return to game button pressed!");

[android-developers] Trying to black out screen programatically

2012-07-24 Thread Cythes
So this is really a repost from Stack Overflow so that is out there in the
open. Here is what I am trying to do, I'm trying to get the screen to
"black out" when I run the app in question. I know this
sounds Spam-like but I assure you this app is being built in the best of
intentions. So here is the basic jist of the code I need a hand with:

WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = getWindow().getAttributes();
float brightness = 1.0f;
lp.screenBrightness = brightness;
getWindow().setAttributes(lp);

I have also tried:

android.provider.Settings.System.putInt(this.getContentResolver(),
android.provider.Settings.System.SCREEN_BRIGHTNESS, );

As well as:
WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = getWindow().getAttributes();
 lp.BRIGHTNESS_OVERRIDE_OFF;

So Whats going on here?

I don't think so. Jelly Bean will be the most recent Android release for
the next couple of months and many of my users need to change their
individual account settings. So there is no other way than to adapt
this. I can't let my users wait for the next Android release to edit
their account settings.

Maybe I'm just thick-headed (it's been known to happen before), but I'm
still not getting what you are wanting. You just aren't providing enough
information.

So, you want something like this?

< List View Width >
-
|  <- List Item ->  xx|   <- 100dp ->   |
--| |
|  <- List Item -> xxx| |
 --| |
|  <- List Item -> xxx| |

|  xxx| |
-
< Device Screen Width -->

Is that correct?

Thanks,

[android-developers] Multiple intents of the same tipe for AlarmManager

2012-07-24 Thread mighter
I use AlarmManager to start Service at specific time.

 intent = new Intent(ACTION_RECORDER_START);
  intent.putExtra(EXTRA_COMMAND_ID, command.id);
  pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getService(context, 0, intent,
PendingIntent.FLAG_ONE_SHOT);
  alarmManager.set(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP, command.start, pendingIntent);

But if there're multiple events scheduled, only the last one is executed. This
happens because intents are equal and extras are not compared.

What I tried:

1. Custom Intent class:

 static class AlarmIntent extends Intent{

public AlarmIntent(String action){
super(action);
}

@Override
public boolean filterEquals(Intent other){
if(super.filterEquals(other)){

long id  =
getExtras().getLong(AudioRecorder.EXTRA_COMMAND_ID, -1);
long otherId =
other.getExtras().getLong(AudioRecorder.EXTRA_COMMAND_ID, -1);
if(id == otherId){
return true;
}
}
return false;
}
}

But filterEquals is never called.

2. Using setData. This should ensure that intents are not equal and not
overriden. But my Service never starts.

 intent = new Intent(ACTION_RECORDER_START);
 intent.setData(Uri.parse("myscheme:" + command.id));
 pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getService(context, (int)command.id, intent,
PendingIntent.FLAG_ONE_SHOT);
 alarmManager.set(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP, command.start, pendingIntent);

In manifest:

Then do not call startActivity(). The *only reason* to call
startActivity() is to "show the started activity to the user". If you
do not want to "show the started activity to the user", do not start
an activity.

Hi Lim,

I have done many list views so I'm sure I can help, but from the way you
phrased your question I don't fully understand what you are trying to
accomplish:

   1. Move the entire list view over to the right, with a space of 100dp on
   the left?
   2. Right-align the text of each list view item?
   3. Put a space of 100dp to the left of the text in each list view item?
   4. Some combination of the above?

[android-developers] MuPDF Compilation : Unable to build MuPDF source code in windows

2012-07-24 Thread Yogini
Hi All,

I am trying to build a PDFReader using MuPDF third party library. But as
per steps given in ReadMe file of MuPDF android folder, we need to build
MuPDF source to generate 'generated' directory. This generated dierectory
is required for further compilation through ndk_build.

To build this source code in windows I have installed Cygwin, GnuMake, Gawk.
Tried executing make inside source folder of MuPDF where Makefile exists.
On doing so, I am getting following error..

$ make

MKDIR build/debug

CC build/debug/ft_ftbase.o

/usr/bin/sh: cc: command not found

make: *** [build/debug/ft_ftbase.o] Error 127
Please help me in compilation of MuPDF source and to generate 'generated'
directory ?

Thanks in advance.

Yogini

Thanks for reply Baturanija. Permissions on /mnt/extSdCard are drwxrwxr-x
so owner and group ok. Have tried (via adb remote shell) *chmod 777
extSdCard* but operation not allowed. Is there another way?

The permissions on a Galaxy S2 (/mnt/sdcard/external_sd) are drwxrwxr-x
(i.e the same as the S3) and I have no problems writing files.

I did not read your answer, that was the point, but using directly the
main project package name creates a new problem. See my other answer for
the solution I finally reach.

Thank you very much,

[android-developers] Re: Problem getting id of a resource when using a Library project

2012-07-24 Thread Francisco M. Marzoa Alonso
I found a solution, but it is a bit weird and since I use a library for
not making repetitive changes on different versions of same game
(tipically free and pay versions), also a bit annoying.

In this context, net.iberdroid.mygamecore is the Library Project shared
by payment and free versions, and net.iberdroid.gamefree and
net.iberdroid.gamepro are the Android Projects for free and pay versions
of the game.

If I change the package name on the previous code by
"net.iberdroid.gamefree" it works fine. But the problem is that that
code is within the library, and will be used also by
"net.iberdroid.gamepro", so putting the package name of the free version
will broken the pay one and viceversa.

So if I want to still share that code within the library, I will need to
get the package name of the project dinamically. So this will do the trick:

|public static int getDrawableId(String dname) {
String pn = context.getPackageName();
int resId = context.getResources().getIdentifier(dname, "drawable", pn);
return resId;
}

It's also a bit of a quality-control optimization. Different scaling
algorithms give different results, and it stands to reason that
Android's will be optimized more for space/time than would, say, all
of Photoshop's. Plus, Android's scaling algorithms might change over
time (or conceivably be modified by OEMs) -- scaling them yourself
puts *you* in control over the final image look and feel. While that
may be overkill for many apps, there will be some whose designers want
that level of control.

[android-developers] Problem getting id of a resource when using a Library project

2012-07-24 Thread Francisco M. Marzoa Alonso
Hi there,

I am facing problems getting the id of a resource by name when using a
library project:

int resId = context.getResources().getIdentifier("myresname",
"drawable", "net.iberdroid.mygamecore");

It seems like this always returns 0 when using the project as a library,
but it were working flawlessly while it was an standalone project.

net.iberdroid.mygamecore is where those resources resides, and in fact
they are there.

That code is even executed within the library project package, not from
the android project that links it.

Any ideas?

[android-developers] Re: Application to start with

2012-07-24 Thread yvolk
Hi TJ,
I would suggest you start from
playing-tweaking-extending-taking-part-in-development of real and not very
simple Open Source application which uses many of the Android features.
I personally started (three years ago...) from the Twitter Client
application which I'm maintaining now, see
https://github.com/andstatus/andstatus/wiki
It is quite well documented, has links to the related apps/documentation
and it uses:
- widget,
- asynchronous operations,
- data provider,
- account management (the Google's way. Like e.g. in the stock Email app)
- messaging between UI and background service, including retry queue and
message persistence,
- themes and styles for Activities,
- OAuth which is used in many today's online services,
- quite sophisticated SQLite database structure/management,
- internationalization,
...

On the other hand, the application is not so large as e.g. above mentioned
Email application: it really can be comprehended step-by-step.

Welcome!

Ah, it's good to know there is a special case for when the app is in the
foreground. I don't remember this being documented, so thanks for
mentioning.
