Re: [android-developers] Maps api key v1?

2013-04-30 Thread Craig Payne
Hi Ian,

You mean I can use my release key for development also? I do have one, of
course, but I will have to look into how to do this. Can you point me in
the right direction, perhaps? That solution will still be a bit fiddly,
because I have a FREE and PRO version of the app which both use different
certs.

Re: [android-developers] Maps api key v1?

2013-04-29 Thread Craig Payne
Not quite true, Ian. I am trying to fix a bug in an app I released over a
year ago, and my debug.keystore certificate has expired. Given that this is
the default behaviour (365 day expiry), most developers are not going to be
able to use their old API keys to continue development for very long.

I need to make a tiny change, and to do this I will be forced to upgrade to
v2, which means I can no longer support Android 1.6. This will immediately
cut out 8% of my users, who will loudly complain and give me bad reviews in
Google Play. They are not able to upgrade because of fragmentation, and
are stuck with an old version of Android, which up to now I have been able
to support.
I didn't see the "clear communications" that this would be deprecated
either, and I pay special attention to emails from Google. I WAS told by
Google that the v2 web-based maps would be deprecated and DID update them
in time.
While I might expect something like this from the cowboys at Facebook, I
hold Google to a higher standard and I am shocked and disappointed.

It sounds like you're actually from Google, so do you have any solution for
us developers who are trying to support Android, but who have existing keys
with expired debug certificates?

In any case, you appear to be assuming that we shut down a service without

Re: [android-developers] Maps api key v1?

2013-04-29 Thread Craig Payne
Ian, this is not quite true. I am a developer with an app on the market,
and I have an existing v1 API key. The problem is, because the debug
certificate has a default expiry of 365 days, I can't use it any more (it
expired in September). This will be the case for most developers, because
it is the default setting.

I also didn't realise v1 was being deprecated. I would expect Google to
have contacted me by email about this, as I registered for the API key,
have an app on Google Play using maps, and was informed via email that
Google Maps v2 for websites would be deprecated in favour of v3. I'm
pretty shocked about the way this has been handled for Android, and hold
Google to a higher standard.

So to fix my small bug, I will be forced to upgrade to v2, which is only
supported by Android 2.2 and above. 8% of my users are stuck on 1.6 because
of fragmentation issues, and you can bet I will be getting some nasty
reviews from them on Google Play if I stop supporting their devices.

Is there any way to either extend my certificate or change my API key, or
am I screwed?
