[android-developers] Goodbye, list.

2016-07-22 Thread Trevor Page
I've rarely posted in this group, but always found it useful to follow the
various discussions. Now, sadly, it's unsubscribe time for me.

These days the only way it seems to 'benefit' me is to bring in a high
volume of spam from recruiter scum. I've tried adding a few to the spam
filter but it gets tiring.

It's a shame and frankly bizarre that a group dedicated to Google's popular
OS, on Google's own groups platform, is not professionally maintained by
Google, and is instead just a hell hole of spam.

Re: [android-developers] Witch Laptop to buy

2016-06-21 Thread Trevor Page
It depends on your budget and needs. Get the best you can, that's
appropriate for you, with the money you have. There are so many factors
that depend on your needs. Is something large, powerful and battery-hungry
going to be sufficient because it's going to spend most of the time sat on
a desk, or do you need a small portable thing that'll be run off a battery
most of the time and be chucked into a rucksack?

One of the most important factors for me is screen resolution. At the time
when I was last looking for a new machine, most laptops have a crap display
size of 1366px by 768px. That's no good for me. When working with an IDE
like Android Studio where you almost always have quite a few panes open, a
decent display is a must. I settled on this Asus N56VZ in the end. (i7
processor, 1920 x 1080 display, and so on.) and I use Linux Mint on it.
This is an old machine now though.

Re: [android-developers] Is there any API in to communicate on COM Port (serial communication)

2016-03-16 Thread Trevor Page
Hi,

To communicate via your USB to serial interface, use Android drivers
supplied by the manufacturer. The main USB to serial interfaces to support
are Prolific and FTDI. If you Google those two, you can find the Android
driver library for each, which you'd include in your project.

I have an Android application which supports these two manufacturers' USB
to serial interfaces using their respective drivers, and in the several
years the application has been in development, I very rarely come across a
user whose device isn't FTDI or Prolific.

The Prolific driver is a bit annoying because the latest version
intentionally drops support for older Prolific interfaces; a move they
apparently did to fight counterfeits, but one which caused many of my users
problems. I got around this by using both old and new Prolific drivers in
my application.

I'm aware that there is an Android USB driver project on Github, but I
don't know a great deal about it.

Re: [android-developers] Why is Google denying my app? Copyright, trademark perhaps?

2015-01-27 Thread Trevor Page
In my layman's point of view, what strikes me immediately about your site
is that after spending a few minutes looking around, I could not find any
acknowledgement whatsoever regarding the intellectual property rights of
the owners of the media or text you're placing on your website.

From what I gather from reading of various persons' problems with Google's
review process, it does seem that the process is very formulaic without
much chance of recourse or discretion. I can only imagine that the reviewer
has looked at your app and probably followed some kind of checkbox process
that says: Does the app use or reference the IP of others either in the app
or an external reference? Yes. OK, are those IP property rights
acknowledged (or whatever)? A quick scan over it says... nope. Therefore
hit the reject button.

As I say, this is purely a layman's point of view. I know little more than
the average person about IP about copyright. But it does surprise me to
find no disclaimer or acknowledgement on your site, similar to for example
what you find on other sites related to films, such as this for example:
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/copyright/

So, what's going on here? Can anyone clarify why Google keeps denying
this app? I give him full permission to use my site and it's property, why
do they keep denying it? Oh, and the app is called After Credits since
that's what I use everywhere on social media as well as being the URL of my

Re: [android-developers] how often to look for bluetooth data

2014-02-18 Thread Trevor Page
I would expect that your check_for_data() is actually performing an
InputStream.read() or .read(buffer) or .read(buffer, byteOffset,
byteCount), all of which are calls that block until data is available.
While in a call that blocks, the thread won't load the CPU.

put a small sleep in there? Would all of that

Is there nothing to worry about and I should leave it
