[android-developers] Re: 512x512 high res icon required?

2010-11-21 Thread Mark
I went to remove an old app from the market and it REQUIRED me to
upload a 512x512 icon before I could UNPUBLISH the app. At least I
have a heads up now to start making all these large icons before I
need to push any updates out for my other apps.

2010-11-18 Thread Doug Gordon
Yes, we really need to know the actual size of the graphic when it's
viewed in order to figure out what to put in it. On my PC screen,
512x512 is HUGE and I could put a lot of detail in it, but if it gets
shrunk down to a centimeter or two on a side on someone's tablet
device, it's another story!

well, that's great, but it would be better to know what we are suppose
to put in these pictures (icon & "feature") and where it is going to
be used BEFORE making it mandatory.

There wasn't much notice, but there was an email that came from
Android Market Support that gave a maintenance window and a list of
changes to the market. I was also lucky enough to have designed my
icon at 1024x1024, which I then downsize for antialiasing. As for my
other apps, I guess I'll have to redo them. Slightly annoying, sure.
But then, they are doing this to help us market our apps, so I can't
complain too much ;)

The featured 1024 is in case your app gets featured, obviously...
you are right, I am guessing.
The whole thing must be a quiet (half of the internet is talking about
it) move to enable existing apps for Google TV.

Polishing things is a worthy cause - just look how focused and
successful Apple is with such strategy.

Perhaps this will help:

;-) Mac OS X applications have had 512x512 icons this since Snow
Leopard and some are quite amazing.

Although I am not sure if the hi-res icon for the Market is used in
the same way because it does not have an alpha channel

I(We) want to know a guideline
and it should be documented asap.

- just a high res icon? with black background? white?
- high res image with some additional
graphic enhancement compared to normal(low res) icon?
- image with some texts?
- like an ads banner?

and also want to know an usage of this high res icon.

I was fortunate in that I'd already created 512px icons for a
different market. But yeah, definitely pretty damn annoying that this
is suddenly *required* with no advance notice.

I also dispute the whole notion of a 512px "icon". By definition, an
icon is a simple image which looks good at a small size. Even if you
have the source graphics, an icon which works well at 48px is likely
to look stupid when upsized to 512px. /grumble

I was rushing to release a bug fix when I first ran into this- needless to
say the fact that this was unnannounced and REQUIRED was annoying. I
submitted a 512x512 white square. Personally I'm not wasting time on this
until I know what it's for.

Going back, I should have mentioned I was pointing at existing
releases. It would be rather rough if they kicked everybody out that
didn't produce and uploaded an 512x512 app icon in time for whatever
cutover is supposed to occur some time in the near future. Having said
that... the ensuing uproar would be quite amusing.

Going forward.
> So did any of you actually create a 512x512 icon? I had to upsize my

WTF indeed. So let's say an app is not intended for large screen
devices, and the manifest explicitly says so, yet devs have to go
through the exercise to produce a 512x512 icon regardless? Somehow
this doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but hey, what do I know.
Unless, this is supposed to be used in the new app web presence, if
that's coming, but how could we know.

Yes, they didn't give my creative team much notice on this. ;)

Suffice it to say my first upload won't meet the style guidelines,
although oil paint filter or cloth filter can hide a lot of
inadequacies in a scaled up image. ;)

The problem is that a lot of small developers are not artists, so
requiring something that size won't ensure quality and Google might as
well just upscale the HDPI icon themselves.
