Man I most certainly don't click Rate, no matter what, I just want to
get in the game or whatever app.

I guess they have to feel compelled to want to rate it?

[android-developers] Re: Almost nobody is rating my app.

2012-02-09 Thread John Coryat
Ratings are an odd thing on the Android market. My app has over 3,000,000
downloads but only has about 20,000 ratings. That works out to 0.7% of
users rate the app. I think this is pretty typical. Unless you have a
really excellent or really terrible app, people won't rate it.

For 650 downloads, I would expect four ratings. Two is a bit low but that
could mean your app is neither compelling or awful. In a way, that's a
compliment for a new app.

The best way to increase the number of ratings is to improve the excitement
generated by your app. My app is a weather radar app and during the major
storms last year it received hundreds of ratings in a week. This was
because it was actually saving people from getting wet, getting clobbered
by hail and even their lives in a couple of cases. That's excitement.

[android-developers] Re: Almost nobody is rating my app.

2012-02-09 Thread FiltrSoft
Yea, unless your app does something completely out of the ordinary,
you will get very few ratings. The rating system is a little wonky,
where people have to go back to the market to rate it, and it's
probably that extra step that people don't want to bother with. The
best thing you can do is maybe put a link somewhere in your app to
rate your app and just hope for the best.

Can you ellaborate on this? I suspect one of my competitors is doing
us. After 800 ratings in 2 YEARS, they got 800 5-star ratings in 2
WEEKS. So something is going on there, but I don't know what, or how
to catch them.

I know it wouldnt show up in the market place but you could put
something in your app that allowed the users to message you directly
like a form that takes a few strings and sends them to your database
or email or something. Then you could at least get feed back and at
that point you could offer in app content without breaking market
rules.

Some apps, like an app named "Amuse", pop up a message saying that
they will hide the ads for a while if you click on it.

I'm not sure if that's legal or against Google's policy, but it's a
brilliant strategy to get more click through, because even I will
click an ad to get rid of ads for a few hours at a time.

Which is, of course, violation of market content policy terms (
http://www.android.com/us/developer-content-policy.html see "Spam and
Placement" section: "Developers also should not attempt to change the
placement of any Product in the Store by rating an application multiple
times, or by offering incentives to users to rate an application with
higher or lower ratings.")

To OP, 1 rating for ca. 400-500 user is what I'm seeing in my free games,
also take a quick look at other free games on market it's looks like this
is more or less what you should expect.

My apologies for recommending something against the market policies. I was
not aware of that policy. I am just starting out, so I have not gotten that
far in the process to actually put an app on the market.

BTW, I was not advocating making an offer for a better rating. I meant an
incentive for the user to just rate the game.

There is actually now way to know if they rated your app or not, so this
wouldn't work anyway. And apparently there is a whole new crop of
so called 'malware' (mostly filled with ads, etc.) that require you to
give them a 5-star rating to continue playing/watching, etc. Most people
apparently fall for it, and those apps get a high ranking. Eventually
most are removed, but I would be wary of any app that requires you
to rate it.

I seem to recall seeing one like that. I had a VERY different
response It started with an "[self-censored] YOU MORON" and
ended with an uninstall. Problem solved (at least, on my end).
Oh, and I think I gave it a 1-star rating, too. :-)

As long as you are not tying the enhancement to a rating level, I don't
think that would violate the policy.

Now telling whether or not someone actually rated the app is a different
issue.

Can't find the link right now, but the fake Instagram app made the news:

http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/photography/instagram_byzxr.html

It got a whole lot of rankings in no time, apparently most users just though
'if it has that much ratings, it must be safe', and installed it. Of

Have you tried using the app in question? If you use it for a while it
