[android-developers] Re: Android Developer Challenge II Cancelled?

2009-03-23 Thread Sheenmue

I participated in a contest organized by Sun and Siemens Mobile
several years ago where there were 10 finalists decided by judges and
then 3 winners selected by the votes of people in the website. I was
finalist and i was really angry when I saw other finalists were asking
for votes in forums. That was a popularity contest, not a developers
contest, Maybe you think the judges are wrong, but being judged by
people who don't care too much about quality would be worst.

If you think there are too many apps, maybe you should divide the
competition in several categories so the judges can review all the
apps in their category.

[android-developers] Re: Android Developer Challenge II Cancelled?

2009-03-22 Thread Wesley
So, what we can learn from ADC I??? some forum or discussion board said got
more than 1k application/game was submitted... is it true???

for ADC I,

of course, from what we see top 20 was announced.. sure, congratulation to
those... but is those the best application ever??? as what can see mostly
is just for chatting, recording/organize fact or data... those not listed
seem way for creative than listed on top 20(sorry to said that)... before
top 20, was announced, I thought those idea should be a brand new, creative,
bring a new revolution on use of mobile, but yet, not really impress...

for top 20, we saw it...
but for those not in top 20, some of them really spent a lot of effort on
it, scarify their own times, quiting job, invest
from their own pocket money, and some of them have more than 6 moth no
gather with their own family... at the end, what they get??? disappointed???

guess... how many people was involve??
I means even google successful organize the 1st ADC, but google lose more
than 50% of the community... lose community loyalty, and confident...
so, questioning... is that a good strategy???

that why ADC II is playing very important role... to avoid the history
repeated... I guess this is a very difficult part, till now, still
haven't announce for ADC II...

just a simple draft suggestion for google on ADC II,
which only allow contestant to submit proposal of your brilliant idea(part
one), if only if your application/game was selected, google only fund them
to develop(here should be second part of ADC II).

of course, those idea I hope is really a new, impressive, creative, possible
to develop, and make my life more easy one lo... :)

I hope no one will get suffer on ADC II again...
Never hurt someone that support and love your product...

cannot write more... busy... hehe... :)

2009-03-20 Thread SJ

Thanks for the clarification.

And my $0.02 that it should be focused more towards the features and
functionality and how it takes android over and above what it can
normally do rather than how it fares in the marketplace.

cheers,

Sachin

At any rate the content that would be there refers only to the first
 Developer Challenge.
Regarding the second Developer Challenge, it definitely isn't canceled but
we haven't announced plans for it yet. We said we would by last year
 (sorry
about that), but we're still working on how to structure it. The world is
quite a bit different now than it was when we ran the first ADC, so we want
to make sure the new rules/structure make sense, and we are of course
 taking
into consideration everyone's experiences with the first ADC. The second
ADC will definitely not be a clone of the first ADC.

We expect to have all this finalized and announce rules within a couple
months. The event itself will likely run in the second half of the year.

2009-03-19 Thread gjs

Hi,

Also I think some of us are holding our app's for ADC II rather than
releasing to Market.

Without any idea if existing apps in the Market will be eligible for
ADC II, this is difficult decision.

Finally, a lot of us are in regions where the Market is not yet
accepting paid apps so are again waiting to release.

[android-developers] Re: Android Developer Challenge II Cancelled?

2009-03-19 Thread Eric Friesen

I just hope there's a phone besides the G1 that can do 3G on all of
the frequencies by the time the second challenge rolls around. Also,
it would be great if the APIs that were initially going to be in
Android (specifically, in my case, Bluetooth and bluez) are actually
in it by the time this happens. In addition, large applications would
also be at a heavy disadvantage unless apps can be installed on SD
cards or some future Android phone is released with a reasonable (4GB
+) of internal memory.

Otherwise I fear it will be a niche competition with a couple of
people making google maps derivative applications. I was very excited
to make a novel application for the first challenge but had to stop
working on it after the SDK update and it became clear that it
wouldn't be possible. Looking in the git repo it appears that a lot of
progress is being made to improve Android and I think the design
choices being made are top notch keeping Android ahead of the game in
terms of good technology. It also looks like the only (near-term)
future hardware support is going to be the sapphire board, which isn't
quite what I'd hope for in a 2009 feature phone.

[android-developers] Re: Android Developer Challenge II Cancelled?

2009-03-19 Thread Ivan Soto
If my application sells for like $.99 and the top seller is selling around
600 to 1000 a month, a lot of developer would be spending $1500 just to make
themselves to the top. The price would be more than that amount.
Just a thought.

I don't like that idea. I really prefer a challenge that favor towards the
quality and user friendly capabilities.

my 2 cents.

[android-developers] Re: Android Developer Challenge II Cancelled?

2009-03-19 Thread Al Sutton

Dan,

Thanks for the clarification.

How about making the ADC II a set of awards which are given to the best
selling apps in each category each month for the next couple of years.
This would allow the Android user community to vote on what is good for
them, give developers a reason to push their apps to the limit of what
they can do, and allow Google to focus the prizes on groups delivering
what people want.

Just a thought.

[android-developers] Re: Android Developer Challenge II Cancelled?

2009-03-19 Thread Dan Morrill
Oops. Looks like that page was collateral damage when we did the move to
developer.android.com. We're looking into it; thanks for pointing it out.
At any rate the content that would be there refers only to the first
Developer Challenge.
Regarding the second Developer Challenge, it definitely isn't canceled but
we haven't announced plans for it yet. We said we would by last year (sorry
about that), but we're still working on how to structure it. The world is
quite a bit different now than it was when we ran the first ADC, so we want
to make sure the new rules/structure make sense, and we are of course taking
into consideration everyone's experiences with the first ADC. The second
ADC will definitely not be a clone of the first ADC.

We expect to have all this finalized and announce rules within a couple
months. The event itself will likely run in the second half of the year.

For those who speak French, there is still the SFR Android Challenge
