[android-developers] Re: Android as Desktop OS

2010-07-24 Thread Bala
Android is a very innovative concept; the architecture, framework and
the programming model has been robust and developer friendly. Android
has been an ideal platform for smaller devices and embedded systems.

But there has been a growing demand for devices like iPad. To meet
that demand, Google has two choices; one is Chrome way; another is
Android way.

One great advantage for the Android way is - excellent developer
community has already been established all over the world. But the
current Android should not be inflated to work on tablets devices such
as iPad; Google needs to take a very cautious approach; the Sun java
model may be the right one.

Java started with Standard Edition and then branched out to Enterprise
Edition and then other editions. Likewise, Android may come out with
different flavor; Android for standard devices; Android for tablets;
Android for real-time data acquisitions; Android for batch or message
driven asynchronous applications; Android for much bigger devices.

You might try checking this page:

http://code.google.com/p/live-android/

This is not exactly what you have asked,
but trying to use using from a Bootable CD
or USB device might give you an idea of
how would it work on your desktop

After this, try cheching on the project documentations/forums if
somebody
already installed it to the desktop from
the bootable image.

I think, Google Chrome is evolving to become a Desktop OS.
Eventually, whether it is Desktop or Laptop or Palmtop or any MID
(Mobile Internet Device), will have a thin OS served from Clouds with
a wireless connectivity.
